Soccer. Basketball. Golf. While plenty of sports are being shot in 360-degree video, the format is still the exception, rather than the rule. For Samsung, which wants to sell as many Gear VR headsets as possible, that just won’t do. To solve the prob…

As a child of the ’80s, you can bet I love my arcade games. Traditionally, I prefer them on the big cabinets that used to consume my dollars back in the day. If you want something a bit (well a lot) smaller than those old school arcade machines, you can get that with this tiny playable arcade kit.
This little gizmo fits in the palm of your hand and has two buttons and a joystick. Inside the cabinet is a small Arduino board, memory, and a tiny OLED display packed inside a laser-cut cabinet.
You can buy your own tiny arcade kit at Tinycircuits for $59.95(USD). They come in clear or black acrylic cabinets and come with all the hardware you need. Power comes from an internal rechargeable USB battery and you can load up games from an SD card. It doesn’t play classic arcade games, but a custom-programmed games optimized for the teensy screen and controls.
Check out all the videos to see what goes into making one of these things.

The much-awaited Essential Phone was finally unveiled today officially. It comes from Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android, who runs his own company called Essential now. The price and specs of the new handset have been confirmed. It has also been revealed that it’s going to have a modular character and that one of the first modules for this handset is its 360 degree camera.
The Essential Phone features magnetic connectors at the back where modules can be attached. The 360 degree camera module will easily clip to the rear of the smartphone. It’s lightweight at just 35 grams and features dual 12 megapixel fisheye lens which enable it to capture 4K 360-degree video at 30 frames-per-second.
It even includes four microphones for capturing audio while it will draw its power from the handset itself. The accessory power pins will help it remain charged while it’s clipped on the back of the device.
This is going to be a big differentiating factor for this device in a smartphone market that’s crowded with countless flagship options. The company developed it with the aim of making it easy to capture and share 360 degree content using a smartphone in mind.
Those who buy an Essential Phone now will be able to buy the 360 degree camera with it for $50. It will be priced at $199 separately. Both products have only been launched in the United States right now and are available via the company’s website.

Sony has released a new software update for the PlayStation 4. The update is now available for download on the company’s console. The PlayStation 4 firmware update 4.70 doesn’t bring any major new features but it does bring performance improvements. According to reports, it even brings new icons for some of Sony’s own apps, like the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation 4 owners across the globe will receive an over-the-air update notification today when the firmware goes live in their region. They will be required to download firmware update 4.70 or else they will not be able to access network features until they do.
There wasn’t much talk about this update prior to its release but that’s mainly because no major features were expected to be included in the next routine update for the PlayStation 4. The changelog simply mentions that this update brings stability and overall performance improvements for the console.
There’s nothing in this update to get really excited about. Some reports do mention that it brings new app icons for some of Sony’s native apps for the PlayStation 4, so users are likely going to notice a slight change in the user interface once they’re on the latest software version.
Sony has started rolling out PlayStation 4 firmware update 4.70 today and it should go live soon for all console owners. With the firmware versions creeping closer to 5.0, it may not be long before Sony announces what it has in store for us with firmware update 5.0.

Western Digital today announced the launch of two new SSD lineups. It’s not surprising even though Western Digital is best known for its hard drives. That’s because the company acquired SanDisk for $19 billion last year, and SanDisk has quite a lot of experience in making SSDs. The two lineups are branded under Western Digital and SanDisk each and are the first SSDs to be based on SanDisk’s 64 layer 3D NAND chips.
These chips enable Western Digital to deliver new SSDS with increased capacity, lower power consumption, and greater speeds. These SSDs are targeted towards DIY enthusiasts, system builders, and resellers.
The two lineups, Western Digital Blue and SanDisk Ultra 3D, are similar when it comes to capacity. They also use the same controllers and thus have similar performance numbers. It’s pertinent to note that the WD Blue offers a M.2 2280 device which the SanDisk SSD doesn’t.
Both SSD lineups will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities in conventional 2.5 inch cased drives. Both promise up to 560MB and 530MB of sequential read and write speeds respectively.
Prices for the SSDs start at $99 for the 250GB model and go up from there. The SSDs will come with a 3 year limited warranty and they will be available for purchase globally in the third quarter of this year.

Like the generic protest signs from the varied millennials in that infamous Kendall Jenner ad, Kim Kardashian is finally going to “join the conversation.”
At this point, Jenner’s Pepsi commercial, once called “So Tone-Deaf It Hurts” by HuffPost’s own Cole Delbyck, is universally seen as a bad idea. In the ad, which was released in April, Jenner joins a crowd of “protesters” and hands a can of Pepsi to a police officer, seemingly as a peace offering.
The officer smiles, the crowd loves it: World peace achieved!
Many criticized the ad for its portrayal of police and protester relations, as well as the company for trying to capitalize on the Black Lives Matter movement and anti-Trump protests in order to sell soda. Whether it was the intention or not, images of the commercial and actual protests put side-by-side are hard to ignore.
In a statement, the company said, “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize.” The ad was pulled within 24 hours of its release.
Reactions from Jenner and the Kardashians have been scant, but while talking to Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” Sunday, Kim Kardashian, Jenner’s older half-sister, opened up about the controversy.
“She totally understood at the end of the day, and she felt really awful for it, and she just wants to move on from it,” she said.
The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star said she didn’t see the ad until it had already received the backlash. She adds, “Any time someone does anything, they don’t have bad intentions of doing it a certain way. Especially Kendall’s so sensitive, she would never mean for anyone to perceive anything in a negative way.”
Jenner obviously didn’t think the ad would get such a strong response. Before the backlash, the model told Women’s Wear Daily, “The whole concept is really something that I’m about, so it was just fun to be a part of.”
It’s probably safe to say her feelings have changed.
