Reporter's Tweet About Japanese Indy 500 Winner Causes A Stir

A Denver sportswriter and his newspaper apologized late Sunday after he tweeted his discomfort with a Japanese driver winning the Indianapolis 500 during Memorial Day weekend.

After Takuma Sato became the first driver from Japan to win the iconic race, Terry Frei of The Denver Post dispatched this missive:

The now-deleted tweet earned him plenty of backlash.

Here’s a sampling:

Frei issued a long-winded apology, linking his sentiments to a Sunday gravesite visit of his father, who flew missions over Japanese targets during World War II.

That didn’t go over well either. Users called him a “racist” and an “embarrassment” and also criticized the effectiveness of the apology.

His employer also sent out an apology.

Watch Dogs Play In The Mud Because It's Too Darn Fun To Ignore

Dogs playing in the mud can be so amusing.

Even if you do have to wash them afterward, you can’t help but admire their ability to turn a quagmire into good, dirty fun.

CrazyFunnyStuff posted this compilation on Sunday. We hope these pooches have found more luck in the muck since then.

Donald Trump Calls Portland Hate Attack 'Unacceptable'

President Donald Trump said on Twitter Monday that his prayers are with the victims of an attack in Portland, Oregon, more than two days after two men were killed standing up to a man spewing hateful verbal abuse at teenage girls.

Trump did not specifically mention that the attack appeared to be an incident of anti-Muslim hate. The alleged killer, Jeremy Joseph Christian, had harassed the two girls, one who is black, and one who is Muslim and was wearing a hijab. Witnesses said the verbal attack appeared to be racially and religiously motivated.

Those killed, Ricky John Best, 53, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, intervened on the girls’ behalf. A third man who confronted Christian, 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, survived the attack.

Alex Rodriguez Will Reportedly Join ABC News As A Contributor

Former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez is stepping into a new role at ABC News as a contributor, Variety reported Sunday.

That means viewers may soon be able to spot Jennifer Lopez’s boyfriend on shows including “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight,” according to the New York Post’s Page Six, which first reported the news.

He’ll also still be serving as a Fox Sports contributor, so A-Rod may soon be an inescapable commenting presence on cable and network television.

Rodriguez, 41, reportedly wants to step outside the realm of sports to offer his thoughts on a variety of lifestyle topics, including finances and family life. According to Variety, his Fox contract could prohibit him from talking sports except on non-sport-centric shows like “GMA.”

There’s been no word on the Rodriguez-led CNBC pilot ordered back in January, “Back in the Game,” a reality show about cash-strapped former athletes.

Rodriguez, whose baseball career was marred by scandal involving performance-enhancing drugs, retired in August after the Yankees released the former MVP from his contract.

“That was the Yankees’ decision and I am at peace with it,” he said at the time.

Pacemakers are far more vulnerable to hacking than we thought

Back in January, the FDA has finally acknowledged that some pacemakers and other cardiac devices are vulnerable to hacking. But how vulnerable are they, exactly? A security company called WhiteScope has discovered 8,000 bugs that hackers can exploit…

Motorized Solar System Lets You Play God

If you like to learn about space, the planets and stars, this desktop Solar System might be just for you. It’s motorized allowing the planets to orbit around a glowing lamp sun. It’s not 100% accurate, but it’s a reasonable facsimile of our little corner of the universe.

The mechanism that powers the Solar System is designed to allow you to see the relative orbital periods of inner versus outer planets. Also, if you take the yellow dome off the sun, it has a projector inside that throws 38 constellations on your ceiling.

Okay, it’s not so much a projector as black painted dot-to-dot art that casts shadows. Power comes from four AAA batteries that aren’t included and it will turn itself off after 20 minutes to save battery. ThinkGeek calls it the Scientifically Accurate (or thereabouts) Motorized Solar System and you can get one for $49.99 (USD).

Navy SEAL Killed When Parachute Doesn't Open In Fleet Week Demo

Fleet Week took a tragic turn not far from the Statue of Liberty on Sunday.

A Navy SEAL plummeted into the Hudson River and died when his parachute failed to open properly during a demonstration, according to reports.

The parachutist, performing with “The Leap Frogs” parachute team, landed in the water just off Liberty State Park in Jersey City, ABC News reported. The Coast Guard and Jersey City Fire Department Marine Unit retrieved the SEAL, who was taken to Jersey Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

The parachutist could be seen peeling away from the team’s formation and fell out of view of spectators, blocked by some buildings, The New York Times reported.

Photographer Joe Shine told NJ.com that the parachutist, realizing his predicament, appeared to detach the faulty chute so he would land in the river. The chute fell onto a parking lot.

His name was being withheld until family could be notified.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, and I ask for all of your prayers for the Navy SEAL community who lost a true patriot today,” said Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, commander of the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, according to The Associated Press.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the parachute malfunction.
