Hitman Franchise Not Necessarily Ending: Square Enix

It was confirmed earlier this month that new Hitman games had been placed on hold because Square Enix had decided to withdraw its investment from Hitman developer IO Interactive. The future of the much-loved Hitman franchise remains in limbo as Square Enix attends to the business matters. The company says that the sale of Hitman studio IO Interactive doesn’t necessarily mean that this franchise is going to end.

A new report claimed recently that Hitman Season 2 was being planned as IO Interactive had retained the rights to Hitman. So no matter where it ends up after Square Enix divests its interest in the developer, it will be able to continue working on Hitman.

Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda revealed to investors that just because the company is getting rid of IO Interactive it doesn’t mean that the Hitman franchise will end. He added that Square Enix is “negotiating with prospective external investors capable of ensuring that these titles carry on.”

When asked by an analyst about Square Enix’s reason for doing away with IO Interactive, Matsuda said that one of the reasons was “the nature of the competitive landscape in the Western markets.”

He added that Square Enix had decided that it needed to concentrate its development resources, and that “the decision to withdraw from that business was the result of a review of our Group’s allocation of both financial and human resources.”

Laptop Ban May Extend To Flights Departing The U.S.

The Trump administration enacted a new ban earlier this year, passengers on flights to the United States from eight countries can not carry-on devices larger than smartphones with them into the cabin. They are thus prohibited from carrying on tablets and laptops, all such devices have to be checked-in. If the latest reports are believed, the laptop ban may be extended to flights departing the United States as well.

There had even been reports that the administration was thinking about extending this ban to flights departing Europe but after officials from both sides met, the proposal was said to have been shelved.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said in an interview with CNN that an extension of the ban is being considered as the United States continues to receive intelligence about constant threats against passenger aviation.

“We are now looking at kind of a worldwide hard look at raising the bar, the minimum bar, on aviation security. So, still contemplating extending the ban, as we work with partners,” he said.

It would be a major step on part of the Department of Homeland Security if it decides to extend the ban to flights departing the United States. Kelly hasn’t confirmed, though, if and when this is going to happen.

There’s no timeframe to suggest how long it might take before this happens. “We will make a decision when the time is right,” said.

Windows Phone 7 Nokia Smartphone With Physical Keyboard Leaks Online

Nokia spent a few years under Microsoft’s wing as the company tried to compete in the lucrative smartphone market by relying upon Nokia’s iconic branding. It did churn out a couple of good handsets but they never really caught on. Microsoft took a hit on the Nokia deal and is now trying to completely shake up the smartphone industry, but that may take a lot of time. Until that happens, we can feast our eyes on a canceled Windows Phone 7 handset that features a physical keyboard.

This prototype device is believed to have been made around 2012. It doesn’t have a name but is referred to as the Nokia RX-100. The handset’s physical keyboard immediately stands out, it’s very similar to the keyboards on BlackBerry handsets.

However, the prototype doesn’t have any of the sleek looks of other Lumia handsets that were actually released by Nokia, so it was possibly a very early prototype. Images suggest that the RX-100 is running a developer preview version of Windows Phone 7.

It’s unclear what happened to this project. Nokia hasn’t said anything about the devices it was working on and never ended up releasing. We can’t expect it to spill the beans now that it has all been said and done.

It would have been interesting to see where this project would have gone had Nokia decided to pursue it to a logical conclusion. There weren’t a lot of keyboard-toting Windows Phone 7 smartphones on the market after all.

AlphaGo Retiring From Competitive Go

Google’s DeepMind division has created the artificial intelligence-powered AlphaGo which has taken on some of the best players of the ancient Chinese board game Go and has beaten them. It recently took on Ke Jie who is currently ranked as the world’s best player of Go. AlphaGo beat Ke Jie 3-0 at the Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen, China. Google’s DeepMind division has now confirmed that AlphaGo is retiring from competitive Go.

DeepMind co-founder and co-CEO Demis Hassabis confirmed that AlphaGo will not be participating in any competitive Go matches from now on. He said that this decision was made because AlphaGo’s victory at the summit represented “the highest possible pinnacle for AlphaGo as a competitive program.”

AlphaGo had its first taste of victory against a legendary Go player Lee Se-dol. It defeated him 4-1 in a match that took place in Seoul, South Korea. The scheduled match between AlphaGo and Ke Jie was closely matched as many were impressed by the program’s ability to take on some of the best human players of the complex game.

The team behind AlphaGo is not going to rest on its laurels, though. It’s now going to work on the next set of grand challenges which include developing advanced general algorithms that could one day help scientists as they tackle some of our most complex problems, such as finding new cures for diseases, dramatically reducing energy consumption, or inventing revolutionary new materials,” says Hassabis.

BMW Unveils New Zero-Emission Concept Motorcycle

BMW has unveiled its new concept zero-emission motorcycle at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017. The new concept is inspired by BMW’s Motorrad Vision Next 100 and is called the BMW Motorrad Concept Link. The company says that the concept combines digital connectivity with the demands of urban mobility on two wheels.

The BMW Motorrad Concept Link has a unique design language. It’s not based on today’s concepts, it actually strives to meet the basic functionality and digital needs of users.

Since it’s a zero-emissions concept, it’s all-electric. The Motorrad Concept Link has flat energy packs in the underfloor and compact drive on the rear wheel. This enabled BMW to create a distinctive design that defines the segment.

BMW has focused on meeting the requirements of urban mobility. E-drive provides a high level of riding pleasure with fast acceleration and easy handling. It even has a reverse gear for easy maneuvering.

It’s going to be smart as well. The BMW Motorrad Concept Link keeps the rider connected at all times, it knows what’s in the rider’s calendar and can, therefore, plan the fastest route or the most scenic route. It can even select the most suitable music for that ride if required.

It doesn’t feature a classic instrument cluster. All of the relevant information about speed, navigation, and battery is projected on the windshield directly in the rider’s field of vision. Secondary information is displayed on the touch-sensitive surface panel positioned below the handlebars.

Since it’s just a concept, it remains to be seen what form the Motorrad Concept Link takes if BMW ever decides to sell an actual motorcycle based on this concept.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 Leak Dismissed By Disney CEO

It was reported a couple of weeks back that hackers had apparently managed to steal a copy of Disney’s upcoming blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and that they were threatening to release it online if Disney did not pay their ransom. Those reports may not have been true as Disney CEO Bob Iger has dismissed them.

The reports made it seem that Disney was hacked and that the hackers were able to steal a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. They were said to be seeking a ransom from the company but it wasn’t said how much they wanted Disney to pay them if it didn’t want the movie to be leaked online.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told Yahoo Finance that “To our knowledge we were not hacked.” He did say that the company had a threat of a hack of a movie being stolen and it decided to take the threat seriously. However, the company did not “react in the manner in which the person who was threatening us had required.”

There seemed to be some truth to those reports since something similar happened to Netflix. Hackers were able to get their hands on the latest season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black which they leaked online after they were not paid.

It was suggested that “an enormous amount of money” was demanded from Disney to ensure that the movie wasn’t leaked online, but it now appears that Disney wasn’t hacked at all and it may have just been an empty threat.

Far Cry 5 Launch Trailer Reveals U.S. Setting

Prior to Ubisoft confirming details about Far Cry 5, it was reported that the upcoming addition to this franchise would be set in the United States. Ubisoft has now released the official Far Cry 5 launch trailer which confirms that the game will indeed be set in the United States, the rural part of the country to be precise.

Far Cry 5 is going to feel quite different to fans of the franchise have played all of the previous games. The Montana setting for the new title is very different from the types of locations that Far Cry games are normally set in.

Players will be tasked with leading a resistance against a religious cult so they can be sure that there’s not going to be any shortage of violent action that has kind of become the hallmark of Far Cry titles.

It’s going to be a completely different gameplay experience compared to Far Cry: Primal which had players battling for survival at the beginning of human civilization without guns.

It’s evident from the trailer that there will be an abundance of guns in the new game so it will be good enough to capture the interest of longtime fans.

Going by the trailer alone, Far Cry 5 appears to be interesting in more ways than one. Expect Ubisoft to reveal more information about the game in the weeks to come.

Trump Wants To Defund Programs That Help Small Farmers Survive

When Marshall Bartlett describes Como — the northern Mississippi town of 1,200 where he lives and operates a farm that’s been in his family for 150 years — he says the statistics speak for themselves.

Among the Panola County town’s residents, 35 percent report income below the poverty line, far exceeding the statewide poverty rate — which itself has been cited as the highest in the nation. And the county’s unemployment rate of 6 percent outpaces state and national numbers.

“It’s all pretty grim,” Bartlett admitted.

Bartlett says his father had encouraged him and his siblings to not pursue careers in agriculture, and he initially heeded that advice — earning a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies at Dartmouth College and working with AmeriCorps to rebuild the homes of Hurricane Katrina victims in neighboring Louisiana, among other pursuits.

But about four years ago, the now-28-year-old returned to the farm with a lofty aim: to not only keep the farm in the family but also bring economic opportunities back to the place where he grew up.

The result was Home Place Pastures. Bartlett and his team grow and process pasture-raised pork, beef and lamb with a keen eye on humane handling and environmentally friendly practices. The farm now processes about 25 hogs, five steers and 20 lambs and goats a week, bringing in about $30,000 in revenue. And Bartlett has 12 farm employees, about half of whom live right in Como.

“We’ve gotten here in a little over three years, which is pretty crazy,” Bartlett told HuffPost. “I’m really proud to have built this here.”

Though a lot of hard work contributed to that success, Bartlett also credits two U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development grants that helped make the farm’s steady growth possible.

In 2014, Bartlett applied for and received a USDA value-added producer grant (VAPG) of about $50,000 to help finance the farm’s expansion of its pork business, allowing it to supply products to area restaurants, retailers and consumers by helping to finance refrigerated delivery equipment. A year later, the farm received a second $50,000 grant to help establish its free-range lamb operation.

Bartlett doubts the farm would be in the position it is today without the federal help.

“We were able to handle these upfront expenses without borrowing a ton of money,” he said. “Without that injection of those grants, we wouldn’t have been able to do all this.”

The VAPG program was created under the Clinton administration in 2000 to reward farmers, particularly beginners, who were working to diversify farm income streams by creating products and marketing opportunities that added resilience against volatile commodity prices. The program awarded $45 million in grants to 325 producers last year.

This kind of support, advocates say, is especially important when many U.S. farmers are struggling with falling income and rising debt, as well as the extreme weather challenges associated with climate change.

And yet the program is on the chopping block.

As part of a proposed 21 percent reduction in the USDA’s overall spending, President Donald Trump’s budget plan calls for eliminating the funding for VAPG and other rural development programs under the department’s Rural Business-Cooperative Service.

The programs were deemed “duplicative and underperforming” in the president’s skinny budget. Neither USDA nor Office of Management and Budget officials responded to a request for further explanation of the proposal.

Wes King, policy specialist at the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, said the elimination of these programs could be devastating for many smaller farmers.

“If this were to go away, I think you would have a number of farms that would probably end up closing up shop,” King told HuffPost.

Anna Johnson, a policy program associate at the nonpartisan Center for Rural Affairs, described the RBCS cuts as particularly alarming when combined with massive cuts proposed for other initiatives aimed at rural communities, like zeroed-out funding for the Rural Economic Development Program as well as the USDA’s water and wastewater loan program, which helps fund rural infrastructure projects.

“Economic opportunity in these rural areas is a really big issue, and these areas face higher levels of poverty,” Johnson said. “These are really important programs. For the administration to propose eliminating these supports is troubling for rural communities.”

Criticism of the proposed USDA cuts has come from all sides of the agriculture sector ― including the conservative-leaning Farm Bureau Federation, which said the plan “fails agriculture and rural America” ― as well as members of Congress from both parties

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue appeared to be distancing himself from the president’s spending plan this week. Perdue attempted to assure lawmakers that he is elevating rural development concerns at the USDA, but his reorganization has eliminated the undersecretary for rural development.

Some farmers appear willing to give Perdue a chance to make good on that pledge.

In 2015, William Powers, who owns and operates Darby Springs Farm in Ceresco, Nebraska, alongside his wife, Crystal, was another recipient of a $50,000 VAPG grant. The federal money helped finance the farm’s construction of a creamery that will allow them to make and sell ice cream using milk from their pasture-grazed dairy cows.

“The program is crucial for young entrepreneurs with a cash-flow situation,” Powers explained. “We’re not independently wealthy, so that grant helps us make up some of those upfront payments.”

While Powers believes the proposed cuts to the VAPG and other USDA rural development programs would be detrimental to farms like his, he thinks it’s unlikely Congress will move forward with them.

“But who knows?” he added. “I’m an optimist.”
