Snap May Have Bought A Drone Maker

snapchat upload
Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has hardware ambitions. That is something which is known to all. The company’s first hardware product, Spectacles, may not have performed as well as it might have hoped but that doesn’t mean Snap is going to give up on these ambitions. If a new report is believed, Snap may have acquired a drone maker, and if that’s true it gives us a hint of what to expect from the company.

Buzzfeed News reports that Snap has acquired Ctrl Me Robotics. It’s a small drone maker that’s based in Los Angeles, California. The report even says that this was a cheap deal for Snap as the company’s purchase price was under $1 million.

It has been rumored for quite some time now that Snap is interested in drones and that its next hardware product might be a drone of some sort. This acquisition goes to show that Snap may not have just a passing interest in drones and that this is something it might be thinking about seriously.

It’s claimed that Ctrl Me Robotics was actually in the process of winding down when it approached Snap for a possible deal. Sources familiar with the deal tell Buzzfeed News that the transaction amount was less than $1 million.

When contacted by the scribe for its reaction to the report, Snap declined to comment, so it’s neither confirming nor denying that it has picked up a drone maker.

Huawei Watch 2 Classic Released In The U.S

It has been a few weeks since Huawei launched the Watch 2 in the United States. The company initially released the plastic and ceramic-made variants in the country. It has now announced the launch of the Huawei Watch 2 Classic in the United States. The Classic is a dressier version of the smartwatch and will go well with formal outfits.

The Huawei Watch 2 Classic has been fashioned out of stainless steel and it’s accompanied by leather bands that complete the whole premium look and feel of this smartwatch. That’s also a big reason why this variant is a bit more expensive than its counterparts.

Everything else remains the same. The Huawei Watch 2 Classic has the same 1.2 inch 390×390 pixel resolution circular display with 4GB of RAM and 420mAh battery.

It also features a built-in GPS, NFC, heart rate sensor, and runs Android Wear 2.0. The smartwatch is also dust and water resistant and is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

Customers who are interested in picking one up can now do so. The Huawei Watch 2 Classic has been priced at $369.99. It costs $70 more than the plastic and ceramic variants of the Huawei Watch 2.

It’s now available for purchase from Amazon, Best Buy and New Egg. For a limited time, all customers will receive 10 weeks of free access to Google Play Music.

BlackBerry-Qualcomm Arbitration Final Award Amounts To $940 Million

It was confirmed in April this year that the arbitration between BlackBerry and Qualcomm had resulted in a settlement of the dispute. Qualcomm was ordered to pay $814 million back to BlackBerry that the latter had overpaid as royalty to the chipmaker. However, the final arbitration award has now been calculated and it’s much closer to a billion dollars than it previously was.

The final arbitration award takes into account interest and attorneys fees. They have been added to the original award of $814 million. Qualcomm now has until May 31st to pay BlackBerry a sum of $940 million. That’s just shy of a billion dollars.

Though it might seem that Qualcomm is being made to pay through the nose for this, it may have saved itself quite a bit of money by agreeing to an arbitration. Lawsuits tend to take time and companies rack up big bills for legal fees in the process. Not to mention the fact that the longer the case would have gone on, the more the interest would have been on the final amount.

The news about the final arbitration award predictably impacted Qualcomm’s stock which was down 2 percent, while BlackBerry’s stock climbed by over 2 percent to bring it to its four-year high. Then again, it has been a while since BlackBerry has scored a home run.

Huawei Nova 2 And Nova 2 Plus Announced, Specs Confirmed

Huawei has launched a couple of new handsets this week. The new devices are sequels to the original Nova and Nova Plus smartphones from last year. The company did say recently that it was going to officially confirm the details about these devices in the near future and now it has. The new devices come with specs improvements and subtle design improvements as well.

Like their predecessors, the Huawei Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus both have a metal unibody design and similar specifications. The big difference between them is the display size and battery.

The Huawei Nova 2 features a 5-inch full HD display with a HiSilicon Kirin 659 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, a 20 megapixel front and 12 megapixel + 8 megapixel dual rear camera with LED flash. The handset also features a 2,950mAh battery, Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.1, fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port.

Huawei Nova 2 Plus has a larger 5.5 inch full HD display with the same processor and RAM. It does have more storage, 128GB to be precise. It has the same 20 megapixel front and 12 megapixel + 8 megapixel dual camera system on the back. The battery is bigger as well, it’s a 3,340mAh pack.

Huawei has only launched the Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus in China so far where they will be available in black, gold, green, blue and rose gold colors for $465 and $423 respectively. No word as yet on when the company is going to launch them in other markets.

LG V30 Might Have A Slide-Out Secondary Display

LG launched its new “V” series of flagship smartphones a couple of years back. They’re a big unique in that the handsets have a secondary ticker display on top of the main display. If reports to be believed, LG is going to kick things up a notch for the third addition to the series. A leaked original concept for the LG V30 suggests that the handset may have a slide-out secondary display.

This LG V30 original concept, made by the company itself, has been leaked by Evan Blass a.k.a @evleaks who has a good reputation with these things. However, he did point out that these are early mockups and it’s unclear right now if LG went in this direction.

The render shows that there would be a secondary display underneath the primary one which may double as a keyboard or provide quick access to most frequently used features. The secondary display would slide-out as and when required.

The extra screen real estate that a secondary display would provide will also allow users to maximize the use of the primary display’s screen real estate, since options, keyboards, and other controls won’t clutter up the main display.

That being said, it’s not known for sure right now if LG has taken the V30 into this direction. The company is expected to come out with the LG V30 in September this year. We’re likely going to hear more about the device before then.

Game Of Thrones Season 8 Episodes Confirmed

Game of Thrones is without a doubt one of the most popular TV shows. HBO is gearing up to premiere the seventh season of this hit show in July. There’s a lot of anticipation among fans across the globe, which number in the tens of millions. There were rumors that the eighth and final season of the show is shorter than all previous seasons, and a new report confirms that this is going to be the case.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the Game of Thrones season 8 episodes will only be six in total, this means that the final season is also going to be the shortest season ever for Game of Thrones.

It hears from sources that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss always planned to cap the show at 73 total episodes. They are now said to be writing the final episodes that will make up the eighth season alongside finishing post-production work on the upcoming seventh season.

The franchise isn’t going to end with the eighth season, though. HBO is believed to be developing as many as five Game of Thrones prequel ideas with different writing teams to take the franchise forward. However, it doesn’t mean that HBO will greenlight any one or all of the prequel ideas.

HBO released the first official Game of Thrones season 7 trailer earlier this week. The upcoming season premieres July 16th.

Blue Whale On Northern California Beach Likely Struck By Ship

A blue whale that washed ashore in northern California was struck by a ship, experts believe.

The female whale, 79 feet long, washed ashore Friday at Agate Beach in Bolilnas, about 13 miles north of San Francisco. Scientists from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito and San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences conducted a necropsy on site Saturday and took blood and tissue samples.

The carcass had major blunt-force trauma along its left side.

Scores of people were traveling to the beach to see the whale, but the smell of the decaying carcass was becoming overpowering, witnesses told ABC-7 TV. Several people were emotional about the dead beast. But scientists were eager to learn what they could from the body.

“We rarely have the opportunity to examine blue whales due to their endangered status,” Barbie Halaska, a research assistant at the Marine Mammal Center, said in a statement. “The opportunity to perform a necropsy on a carcass in this good of condition will help contribute to our baseline data on the species.”

The entire left side of the whale was damaged from a boat strike, and the whale had 10 broken ribs and 10 fractured vertebrae from close to its tail to mid-body, according to Halaska.

The whale was identified through photographs of its tail in a database of the Cascadia Research Collective. It was spotted 11 different years beginning in 1999, most often off Santa Barbara.

The dead whale will be left on the beach to decompose and be eaten by birds. A reef along Agate Beach would make towing the carcass back out to sea difficult.

Blue whales are the largest creatures on Earth. There are as many as 9,000 of them around the globe, and an estimated 2,800 off the California Coast.

Ships are a major threat to whales especially during migration season. Early this month the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries asked large ships to voluntarily cut their speeds in half to about 11 mph in shipping lanes heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge, according to the Monterey Herald. While whale strikes will continue to occur, officials hope the animals will be more likely to survive a collision at lower speeds.

Kumail Nanjiani Tells Grads To ‘Have Sex With An Immigrant’

Things may feel a little tense for immigrants in America these days, but comedian Kumail Nanjiani has a plan to make things feel a little more relaxing for everyone.

“Have sex with an immigrant,” Nanjiani told the graduates of Grinnell College during a commencement speech. “We’re going through a tough time right now, and it would just be really great for morale.”

Nanjiani graduated from the liberal arts school in Iowa in 2001. Grinnell invited him back this week to deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2017. During the ceremony, the school awarded Nanjiani with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

The star of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” opened up to the graduates about his experience moving from Pakistan to Iowa for college and how it shaped the way he moved through the world.

“When I came to Grinnell I was a devout Muslim who had never romantically touched a girl and I was going to get a degree that guaranteed me a job,” Nanjiani said. “By the time I graduated I was basically a Rastafarian with a white American girlfriend and a philosophy degree. College changes you, is my point.”

He also offered advice on how to take on bigotry, even if it is uncomfortable.

“We cannot expect others to understand our point of view if we don’t understand theirs,” he said. “It’s uncomfortable and awkward and infuriating and it hurts your brain, but with that pain can come growth and real change.”

“Being a fish out of water is tough, but that’s how you evolve,” he added. “I think that’s scientifically accurate — I don’t know, I had a liberal arts education.”

Nanjiani advised the graduates to live with intention and not fear failure ― unless, as he joked, you’re the person who created the exploding Samsung Galaxy phones.

“I never thought big picture,” Nanjiani said. “That would have overwhelming. So what I’m saying is, you can go slow. Allow your dreams and goals to change, but live an intentional life.”

He continued: “Here’s the big secret I’ve learned in the last few years: Nobody knows what they’re doing … Everybody’s winging it out there. Some people are just better at pretending to be confident because nobody’s done ― nobody’s cooked.”

Philippines President Duterte Says His Soldiers Can Rape During Martial Law

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte — congratulated last month by Donald Trump for his murderous war on drugs — told his soldiers that he will back them up if they rape women while enforcing martial law.

It was apparently intended as humor, and drew stinging rebukes from human rights and women’s organizations.

Duterte promised to back up his men in a rambling speech delivered Friday on the island of Mindanao, where he imposed martial law last Tuesday to battle militants linked to the Islamic State.

If any of them were to rape three women, he said, he would personally claim responsibility for the attacks, according to a transcript of the speech released by the president’s office, The Guardian reported.

“Fight, and I will pray for you and I will answer for everything,” he said at one point in english in a videotape of his speech. “If you go down, I go down. I and I alone will be responsible.”

He added: “Just do your job. I will take care of the rest. I will go to jail for you. If you rape three, I will admit it.”

He also said: “You can arrest any person, search any house.”

Phelim Kine, a deputy director with Human Rights Watch’s Asian division,
said that the president’s “pro-rape comments only confirm some of the worst fears of human rights activists that the Duterte government will not just turn a blind eye to possible military abuses in Mindanao, but may actively encourage them.”

The Gabriela Women’s Party in the Phillippines issued an angry statement saying: “Rape is not a joke. This attempt to please the military forces using women to feed the macho fascist mentality … emboldens military forces to systematically use rape as a tool of war.”

Chelsea Clinton took to Twitter to lash the idea of a rape comment as a joke, saying: “Not funny. Ever.”

Duterte’s spokesman responded to the outrage by saying that the president was using “heightened bravado” to lift troop morale, Agence France-Presse reported.

Last year Duterte “joked” about an Australian missionary who was killed in a prison riot after men lined up to rape her. Duterte said she was beautiful and that he should have been first in line.

Duterte is notorious for his war on drugs that has resulted in the extra-judicial killings of at least 7,000 suspects. He once boasted that he himself had pushed a drug trafficking suspect out of a helicopter, but later said he was joking.

President Trump called him in April to congratulate him on a job well done.

“I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem,” Trump said in the April 29 phone call, according to a transcript of the call leaked to the media. “Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that.”

Trump has invited Duterte to visit him in the White House. Duterte hasn’t yet accepted the invitation.
