Punk Rock Physics Experiment Is Hunting for a Dark Matter Particle Named After Laundry Detergent

FERNEY-VOLTAIRE, FRANCE— Some particle physics experiments are easier to ride than others. The giant detectors that take pictures of particle collisions on miles-round rings don’t really have anywhere to sit, and the intense bureaucracy would probably demand an unwieldy amount of paperwork for would-be riders,. Heat-Activated Total Solar Eclipse Stamps Reveal What’s Blocking the Sun

Most US Postal Service stamps are pretty, but boring. I recently got some Wonder Woman stamps that looked awesome, but once the initial excitement wore off, they were just stamps to me once again. Well, the USPS has something really interesting to offer now.

To celebrate the total solar eclipse visible in parts of the United States on August 21st (this is the first total solar eclipse visible in the US since 1979, and the first traveling across the entire country since 1918. It’s a big deal.), the US Postal Service is releasing these cool commemorative stamps that can change based on heat.

When they are at regular temperature, they appear completely black, but when rubbed with your ringer, the thermochromic ink reveals the moon. It’s like those heat activated mugs that we all love. I hope they make more stamps like this.

Facebook teen mood tracking sparks privacy outrage

Facebook has been accused of tracking emotionally-vulnerable teenagers and opening up that data to advertisers hoping to cash in on insecure kids. The social network has been pushing its advertising platform in recent years, chasing ad revenue that might once have gone straight into Google’s pockets. However, while it has access to a whole host of personal information, Facebook has … Continue reading

Has-Been Heroes review: Good ideas in a frustrating package

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but these super difficult games known as roguelikes – named for the 1980 game Rogue – seem to keep growing more and more popular. Distinguished by sometimes brutal difficulty, quick runthroughs that often end in failure, permadeath, and an element of randomness, these games are addicting in their challenge. You will fail a lot, … Continue reading

This is the “House of Cards” season 5 trailer, and it’s dark

The official House of Cards Season 5 trailer has landed, and it seems Netflix’s hit series has had to crank up the tension just to compete with real politics. The show, which returns to the on-demand service on May 30, is already multi-award winning and one of Netflix‘s biggest draws. Now, as it enters its fifth season, critics are waiting … Continue reading

Twitter Is Concerned Ryan Seacrest Is Coming For All Of Our Jobs

On Monday, Kelly Ripa announced that Ryan Seacrest would be her new “Live! with Kelly” co-host, replacing Michael Strahan after he left for “Good Morning America” in May of last year.

Seacrest is a surprising choice for co-host, only because he’s one of the busiest people in the media business today.

The former “American Idol” host is a producer on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” hosts a radio show, is a staple on the on the red carpet during award season, and is ABC’s annual New Year’s Eve host since taking over duties from the late Dick Clark. If that wasn’t enough, the CW announced in January that it picked up a new scripted pilot from Ryan Seacrest Productions called “Insatiable,” which is, well, a good description of Seacrest.

Yes, the 42-year-old is an incredibly busy guy ― something that was not lost on Twitter users, who couldn’t help pointing out that Seacrest might have his hands full.

New Font Is Dedicated To The Queer Activist Behind The Rainbow Flag

In June of 1978, artist and activist Gilbert Baker hand-dyed and stitched together eight strips of vibrant fabric, yielding a rainbow flag.

Each color signified a certain power: pink stood for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for peace and purple for spirit. Today, that flag ― which over time was condensed from eight colors to six ― is immediately recognizable as a symbol of LGBTQ rights and pride.

Baker, who called himself “gay Betsy Ross,” died in March 2017, but his iconic contribution to queer visual culture lives on. In honor of Baker’s legacy, advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather has teamed up with NewfestNYC Pride and Fontself to translate the energy and strength of the beloved rainbow flag into text. Finally, there is a rainbow font.

The colorful type, titled “Gilbert,” is made up of the deconstructed stripes of the Pride flag, with multicolored rectangles curving and overlapping to produce lettering reminiscent of the flag’s 1970s roots.

We wanted to celebrate something that he created that actually changed peoples’ perception of that community,” Ogilvy creative director Chris Rowson told Dezeen.

The blending of colors visualizes, according to Rowson, the fluidity and openness of the LGBTQ community. “We liked the idea of that crossover and that overlay, it kind of creates new things,” he said. “People aren’t just one thing, they’re not just gay, or not just transsexual, everyone can be a mixture of things.”

The font is available for free download from Type with Pride. Its creators hope the eye-catching lettering will be spread across protest posters, Pride rally banners and queer-friendly public spaces around the world.

Queers, allies and font fanatics, get ready to write with rainbow.

Over the weekend, Beyoncé took a little time out of her schedule to remind her loyal followers why she is the one and only Queen Bey.

The 35-year-old “Lemonade” singer, who is expecting twins, slayed at the Inaugural Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. For the event, which was created by her mom, Tina Lawson, Bey wore a stunning red gown by Stephanie Costello for Stello.

She accessorized with long earrings and a floral, bejeweled headpiece that only she could pull off. Talk about a MOMENT:

The dress’s color and long-sleeved style was somewhat reminiscent of Bey’s 2017 Grammy Awards look:

Beyoncé was accompanied by her Instagram husband, Jay Z, at the event:

Solange Knowles and Destiny’s child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also attended the event. Bey posted a photo of the women together, accompanied by a sweet message to her mom:

“I am super proud of my beautiful mother for creating such an awesome event. Close to $1 million was raised for The WACO Theater Center to benefit young people through their mentorship programs and the arts,” Bey wrote.

She added, “Mom, you inspire us all to be generous, selfless, positive, to have empathy, to love and to praise creativity in the world. It brought tears to my eyes to be a witness to what you and Richard have created together. WACO is a safe place truly Where Art Can Occur. I love you.”

Fyre Festival Organizers Hit With $100 Million Lawsuit

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

That didn’t take long.

A $100 million proposed class-action lawsuit was filed Sunday in California against the organizers of the now infamous Fyre Festival on the grounds of fraud, claiming a “lack of adequate food, water, shelter, and medical care created a dangerous and panicked situation among attendees — suddenly finding themselves stranded on a remote island without basic provisions ― that was closer to ‘The Hunger Games’ or ‘Lord of the Flies’ than Coachella,” ABC News reported.

The lawsuit was filed by concertgoer Daniel Jung and his attorney, Mark Geragos, who says the whole debacle “was nothing more than a get-rich-quick scam from the very beginning” and that they “intended to fleece attendees for hundreds of millions of dollars by inducing them to fly to a remote island without food, shelter or water — and without regard to what might happen to them after that.”

The festival, organized by entrepreneur Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, was promoted (with the help of supermodels like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid) as a luxury music experience on a “remote and private” island in the Bahamas with the promise of posh accommodations and adventure for a cost between $5,000 and $250,000.

Alas, when attendees arrived, they realized the reality of #DumpsterFyre was a stark contrast from the advertisements.

The suit, which expects more than 150 plaintiffs, claims attendees “were hamstrung by their reliance upon Defendants for transportation, as well as by the fact that Defendants promoted the festival as a ‘cashless’ event —Defendants instructed attendees to upload funds to a wristband for use at the festival rather than bringing any cash. As such, Attendees were unable to purchase basic transportation on local taxis or buses, which accept only cash. As a result … at least one attendee suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness after being locked inside a nearby building with other concert-goers waiting to be airlifted from the island,” according to an excerpt from Variety

Defendants are accused of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, and breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing. Plaintiffs are seeking damages in excess of $100 million.

McFarland, the 25-year-old Fyre co-founder who has landed in hot water before with his other business ventures, wrote a piece for Rolling Stone saying that the organizers were “overwhelmed.” He promised to refund customers and offer a make-up event next year.

“We thought we were making timeframes that were correct,” he wrote. “We were a little naïve in thinking for the first time we could do this ourselves. Next year, we will definitely start earlier. The reality is, we weren’t experienced enough to keep up.”

Geragos was not immediately available for further comment.

There's Something Wonderful About A Pug Going Full 'Moana'

Doug the Pug wears a hibiscus like no one else we know ― on two or four legs.

The adorable celebri-dog is a thespian island unto himself as he spoofs the Disney hit “Moana.”

He plays the title character and the demigod Maui because acting for this pooch is a day at the beach.
