You'll never play 'Super Mario' like this

You have a lot of Super Mario games to choose from, but you’ll probably never be able to play one of the most fun versions out there. That’s because it was created as an unofficial augmented reality game by developer Abhishek Singh for the Microsoft…

California Deputies Open Fire On Aggressive Dog, Kill Teen Instead

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies say they accidentally shot and killed a teenager while trying to ward off a dog that had bitten a deputy in Palmdale, California, early Thursday.

Officials said a ricocheting bullet hit the teen after deputies opened fire on the aggressive dog, according to an incident report that the sheriff’s department released.

Friends and family members later identified the victim as 17-year-old Armando Garcia-Muro who was entering his senior year of high school, according to the Los Angeles Times and BuzzFeed.

The deputies were responding to reports of loud music when they arrived at the Palmdale apartment complex at 3:47 a.m. on Thursday. As the deputies approached the building, a dog that officials described as a “60 to 65 pound pit bull,” “aggressively charged” at the deputies, biting one of them in the left knee.

Garcia-Muro reportedly appeared from behind the apartment complex and restrained the dog, taking it to the rear end of the building. Deputies retreated back to the street where they waited for paramedics.

While the deputies waited, the dog became loose and charged at the deputies a second time. As the dog approached, deputies said they shot at it from a distance of 5 to 7 feet.

When deputies returned to the building to restrain the dog, they found Garcia- Muro on the ground in the carport area. He had a gunshot wound to the chest. Garcia-Muro was transported to a local hospital after the shooting, where he died of his injuries.

“He may have been struck by one of the skip rounds in what we’re calling an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident,” sheriff’s Capt. Christopher Bergner said at a news conference following the shooting.

“Our initial impression was [the deputies] didn’t even see the individual coming around from the side of the building.”

Five deputies were present during the incident, but only two opened fire, discharging six to eight rounds, according to Bergner.

The deputy whom the dog had bitten was also hit a stray bullet. A local hospital listed his condition as stable Thursday afternoon. Sheriff’s officials said the dog had to be euthanized because of its condition.

Nick Perez, a friend of the victim, told ABC 7 that Garcia-Muro was “trying to stop the dog from attacking the cops.” Residents who live near the apartment complex said that many people in the neighborhood own pit bulls, the news station also reported.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department use-of-force policy permits deputies to shoot at animals if they “reasonably believe” that the creatures are about to “cause death or serious physical injury.” The policy also notes that shooting animals who do not appear to be a threat has proved to be “inherently dangerous to bystanders and personnel.”

Garcia-Muro’s mom, Roberta Alcantar, told ABC 7 that her son had plans to go to college and help his brother.

“He wanted to change his little brother’s life around,” Alcantar told the news station. “He wanted to go to school, college and better himself. He said he was done with his past life.”

The victim’s ex-girlfriend and friend Genevie Escobar told BuzzFeed News that Garcia-Muro had “started out bad” but had recently moved home and was looking for a job to support his family.

The department’s homicide detectives are actively investigating the shooting. Bergener said on Thursday that deputies who fire a weapon while on duty are automatically put on temporary desk duty while the incident is under investigation.

Affogato Recipes, Because Espresso Should Come With A Scoop Of Ice Cream

Italy has a great many culinary achievements to be proud of ― the wine, the cheese, the pasta ― but we think Italians’ real genius in the kitchen is best exemplified with the simple affogato.

For those of you new to this espresso-based dessert, an affogato is a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso poured on top. The ice cream is “drowned” in the espresso ―  affogato is the Italian word for drowned ― and it is the perfect pairing of two of our favorite things.

Vanilla ice cream and espresso is the classic flavor duo, but there are a lot of twists on this combo, of course. We gathered together all the interesting affogatos we could find. (One of them even uses cold brew in place of espresso.) See for yourself:

The Best Summer Ice Cream Flavors Of 2017

Summer is officially here, and that means it’s time to eat all the ice cream.

We know there are plenty of folks who are happy with a simple scoop of vanilla or chocolate. But for everyone else out there who wants a little more excitement ― like campfire bacon s’mores ― we went on a great ice cream hunt.

We tried over 30 premium pints from some of the best ice cream makers in the country (they’re all available online) to find the most exciting flavors being made this summer. And boy, were we ever successful. We’ve been conducting this seasonal search for five years now, and this was hands down the best ice cream taste test to date. There was more than one salted caramel pick, and more than one mint chip. (Proof that it was a great year!)

Without further ado, these are the ice creams worth splurging on this season ― in order from “that’s some damn fine ice cream” to “I might eat this whole pint if you don’t stop me.”

Boeing Factory In South Carolina Where Trump 'Celebrated' Jobs Braces For Layoffs

President Donald Trump proclaimed while visiting a Boeing plant in South Carolina in February that he was there “to celebrate jobs.”

“Jobs is one of the primary reasons I’m standing here today as your president and I will never, ever disappoint you” he told the crowd in North Charleston that day. “Believe me, I will not disappoint you.”

On Thursday, Boeing confirmed that it would be laying off workers at the very plant where Trump had spoken so reassuringly five months ago. The aerospace company told CNNMoney that about 200 jobs at its facilities in South Carolina would be cut.

On the campaign trail and as president, Trump had made expansive promises about creating jobs in America. But thus far, many of these pledges appear to be falling flat.

Carrier announced Thursday that it would be laying off hundreds of workers at a furnace plant in Indiana this year — mere months after making a deal with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to keep workers in the state.

“The jobs are still leaving,” Robert James, president of a local steelworkers union, told CNBC of the Carrier layoffs. “Nothing has stopped.”

Ford announced this week that it would be moving the production of its Focus compact car to China instead of Mexico. The news came after Trump celebrated bringing those auto jobs back to the United States.

As for Boeing, the company had announced in December that it was planning to slash jobs company-wide in 2017 because of stiff market competition and falling demand for new airplanes. Over the past 12 months, Boeing has cut more than 13,000 jobs ― roughly a 9 percent reduction of its workforce, the Post and Courier reported this week.

Yet two months after Boeing’s announcement about its impending workforce cuts, Trump boasted at the company’s North Charleston plant that his administration would fight for workers.

“We are going to fight for our jobs, we are going to fight for our families and we are going to fight to get more jobs and better-paying jobs for the loyal citizens of our country,” Trump said that day. “Believe me.”

Boeing’s South Carolina operations had already been at its lowest employment levels in over three years even before the layoffs were announced this week, according to the Post and Courier.

The paper, quoting a Thursday memo to Boeing employees in the state, said there may be even more cuts to come.

Steam VR “Knuckles” controller has a lot of capacitive sensors

One of the remaining problems with VR, AR, and MR platforms is input. All of them use one form of stick or another, and none of them currently emulate the feel of a hand moving and grasping in the real world. Valve, however, might be coming close to a solution without having to resort to gloves or exoskeletons. The “Knuckles”, … Continue reading

Justin Trudeau's Socks Are On Point

Justin Trudeau knows how to stand out from the crowd.

At a NATO summit in May, amid a sea of monochrome socks in black and navy blue, the Canadian prime minister’s brightly colored footwear was unmissable.

A photograph from the day shows German Chancellor Angela Merkel and others huddling around Trudeau as he pulled up his pant leg to offer a better look at the multicolored pair ― and they were emblazoned with the NATO emblem

A few weeks earlier, Trudeau’s feet had made headlines when he chose to wear a pair of mismatched “Star Wars” socks to a meeting with Enda Kenny, who was then prime minister of Ireland.

The socks were a meaningful choice: The meeting was held on May 4, the date popularly known as #MayTheFourthBeWithYou, or Star Wars Day.

A post on Trudeau’s Twitter account featuring the socks quickly amassed tens of thousands of likes. “Seriously, I challenge all other leaders to be as cool as @JustinTrudeau,” wrote one impressed fan.

Trudeau’s love for cool socks has become quite the online fascination.

On Thursday, the headline of a viral Twitter moment summed it perfectly: “Trudeau’s sock game is strong.”

The proof of the pudding is in the eating… or in this case, the socks.

Seth Meyers Shreds 'Breathtakingly Cruel' Senate GOP Health Bill

Seth Meyers blasted the Senate Republicans’ health care bill that was unveiled Thursday, noting the deep cuts to Medicaid and big tax credits for the wealthy.

But what really stuck in his craw was how the GOP lawmakers plan to rush it to vote after writing it behind closed doors.

“We are seeing a breathtakingly cynical process to produce a breathtakingly cruel bill,” the host said on “Late Night” Thursday.

Meyers pointed to an exchange in which Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) about the prospect of debate on the legislation.

“I think we’ll have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill,” McConnell said.

McConnell repeated the same exact answer when Schumer asked him if the time would be more than 10 hours.

“I think we’ll have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill is the longest euphemism I’ve ever heard for go ’[bleep] yourself,” Meyers quipped.

New Hampshire Republicans Accidentally Pass Law Allowing Pregnant Women To Kill People

Lawmakers in New Hampshire scrambled to close a legal loophole on Thursday after passing a piece of legislation that, on paper, may have allowed pregnant women to commit murder without any repercussions.

The Republican-led legislature passed a new bill this month aimed at so-called “fetal homicide” that would define a fetus as a person after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Anyone who caused the death of such a fetus would be liable for homicide or manslaughter charges, in legislation similar to 38 other states.

The language in Senate Bill 66 included notable exceptions for pregnant women who might want an abortion and their doctors. But shortly after both houses of the legislature passed the bill, people said language used to protect women was so vague it could be interpreted to allow them to commit murder against anyone with impunity.

Lawmakers used a legislative maneuver meant to fix minor spelling and grammatical errors to close that loophole on Thursday, and the updated text cleared both the Republican-led House and Senate along party lines.

The politicians had noticed the odd wording more than a week after the bill initially passed, and raised objections that a line reading “any act committed by the pregnant woman” or their doctors would possibly be legal, even “in cases of second-degree murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, or causing or aiding suicide.”

As various outlets and legal experts note, it’s unlikely pregnant women in New Hampshire would’ve actually been allowed to go around killing people: the state currently has rules that say laws can’t be interpreted literally if they’d provoke an “absurd result.” But that didn’t stop lawmakers from voicing their objections.

“The bill as drafted allows for physician-assisted suicide and allows a pregnant woman to commit homicide without consequences,” Rep. J.R. Hoell (R-Dunbarton) told the Concord Monitor on June 12. “Although that was never the intent, that is the clear reading of the language.”

New Hampshire Democrats had opposed the law, describing it as a “vehicle to undermine protections established by Roe v. Wade,” noting the state already has statutes on the books for increased felony penalties for those who cause the death of an unborn child. As BuzzFeed notes, the provision protecting women was included to appease those fears and protect abortion rights.

Democrats had called for a hearing on the issue, saying it was too notable for the bill to proceed without further discussion, but the bill was sent to the Governor’s desk for a signature regardless, The Associated Press reported.

“No one in this chamber voted to allow anyone to be able to murder anyone. That was not the intent,” the state’s House Majority Leader, Dick Hinch (R), said on the House floor, according to New Hampshire Public Radio.

The act, if signed by the governor, would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018.
