Michael Brown's Family Settles Wrongful-Death Lawsuit For Undisclosed Sum

The city of Ferguson, Missouri, has settled a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the parents of Michael Brown, the unarmed black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in 2014.

Federal district judge Richard Webber approved the civil settlement on Tuesday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Webber sealed details of the settlement and did not disclose the settlement amount.

Brown’s parents, Michael Brown Sr. and Lezley McSpadden, filed the civil lawsuit against the city of Ferguson, former Police Chief Thomas Jackson and former police officer Darren Wilson in April 2015, nine months after Brown was killed.

Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III and attorneys for Browns’ parents declined to comment on the settlement, according to the Associated Press.

The lawsuit alleged that the city of Ferguson fostered a police culture that was hostile to African Americans, which ultimately led to Brown’s death in August 2014. The lawsuit also claims Wilson used excessive and unreasonable force during his confrontation with Brown.

Wilson resigned from the Ferguson police force in November 2014, after a grand jury in St. Louis County announced he would not be indicted. In March 2015, Department of Justice officials announced that Wilson would not face federal civil rights charges in connection with Brown’s death.

The incident sparked months of protests ― which at times turned violent ― in Ferguson and across the U.S.

Webber wrote in his ruling that the settlement amount in Brown’s civil lawsuit is “fair and reasonable compensation for this wrongful death claim and is in the best interests of each Plaintiff,” according to the Associated Press.

Webber said the agreement will remain sealed “due to the adverse impact to Plaintiffs should it be disclosed,” according to a copy of the filing.

“Disclosure of the terms of the settlement agreement could jeopardize the safety of individuals involved in this matter, whether as witnesses, parties, or investigators,” Webber’s ruling continued. “The public policy to consider records open is outweighed by the adverse impact to Plaintiffs.”

Under state law, the city may be forced to disclose the amount of the settlement despite the order.

The Post-Dispatch reported on Monday that the settlement would be less than $3 million, which is the limit of the city’s insurance, but it was not clear how much less the settlement amount would be.

Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff Falls Short In Bid For U.S. House Seat

Republican Karen Handel was the projected winner of Tuesday’s special election for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, according to CNN, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and NBC. Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff in a traditional GOP stronghold that polling suggested could be in play this time around.

The outcome is especially painful for Democrats who viewed Ossoff’s candidacy as a prime opportunity to land a blow against President Donald Trump.

Handel, a 55-year-old former Georgia secretary of state, replaces Republican Tom Price, who left Congress to become Trump’s secretary of health and human services.

Ossoff, a 30-year-old documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide, was ultimately unable to peel away enough anti-Trump Republicans or mobilize enough new Democratic-leaning voters to overcome the district’s deep-seated Republican leanings.

“It was really all about the Republican candidate Karen Handel getting her Republican base to show up in force,” said Kerwin Swint, chair of the political science department at Kennesaw State University, just outside Atlanta. “That’s what made the difference. Jon Ossoff was successful in eating into that base but obviously not quite enough to put him over the top.”

This story is developing.

Interior Secretary Advocates For Cutting Up To 4,000 Jobs At Agency

WASHINGTON — Thousands of federal workers at the Interior Department could soon find themselves out of a job as the Trump administration looks to reorganize the agency and cut its funding by 12 percent

In written testimony submitted Tuesday to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke noted that President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget request would slash funding by $1.6 billion — to $11.7 billion — and support just shy of 60,000 full-time staff, a reduction of roughly 4,000.

“To accomplish this, the Department will rely on a combination of attrition, reassignments, and separation incentives,” Zinke wrote. “Actual attrition rates and acceptance of separation incentives will determine the need for further action to reduce staffing.”

Zinke, who’s tasked with managing some 500 million acres of federal land ― roughly one-fifth of the United States — told the Senate committee Tuesday he supports Trump’s proposal, which he said is “what a balanced budget looks like.” The Interior workforce, he said, is “too heavy in middle and upper management,” and his plan is to shift those assets out into the field, including America’s national parks.

“The way we’re organized currently is we’re all different bureaus reporting to their different regions, and we’re not very good at joint operations,” he said. “So we’re looking at appropriately moving assets to where they should be.”

Zinke added that he has maintained a hiring freeze in Washington, D.C., and Denver, in order to “push bodies to where they belong, out in the front. And you’ll see a movement to make sure we shore up and expand the front line.”

Chris Saeger, executive director of the Western Values Project, blasted Zinke’s testimony in a statement Tuesday.

“Secretary Zinke has already called Interior’s employees ‘serpents’ and told park rangers that private entities could do their job better by privatizing campgrounds ― not a good way to run an agency or a business,” he said. “The cuts in this budget will make it harder for Americans to access the lands that belong to them. Meanwhile, oil companies continue to get sweetheart deals for drilling on American public lands.”

Less than a ago, Zinke sent letters to at least three dozen senior Interior officials notifying them they will be reassigned by the end of the month, The Washington Post reported

Shortly after assuming his new post in early March, Zinke promised his staff he would “fight” Trump on the looming budget cuts. He later changed his tone, saying in a March statement the proposal allows the agency “to meet our core mission and also prioritizes the safety and security of the American people.”

Lenovo Unveils A Foldable PC Concept

We know that companies such as Samsung and LG are interested in creating electronic devices with displays that can fold/bend. In fact the rumors are saying that Samsung is actually pretty damn close to launching such a product, but it seems that these companies are alone in their quest for bendable gadgets.

If you recall, last year Lenovo took the wraps off a concept smartphone that could be bent and worn around your wrist, but that’s not all the company wants to bend. In a recent event held in New York, Lenovo unveiled yet another concept device, this time in the form of a foldable PC which is basically a laptop that you could fold like a piece of paper and stuff it into your backpack.

Now we’re not sure how much different this would be compared to current laptops, some of which are already pretty portable, but we guess if you could fold it even smaller than a laptop, it could possibly fit into a smaller bag like a handbag, thus making it more portable. However this currently remains as a concept as there are many things to consider when making such a device.

For example not only does the screen need to be flexible, but so does its innards like the battery, the motherboard, and the rest of the components. However it is an interesting idea but what do you guys think? Yay or nay on the foldable PC?

Steam Summer Sale Officially Announced For The 22nd Of June

Every year without fail for the past several years, Valve has hosted its Steam summer sale where games across the entire Steam store receive discounts, some of which are pretty generous, while some are a bit more modest, but regardless if you can save some money, then why not, right?

For those wondering about this year’s sale, wonder no more as PayPal has announced that the Steam Summer Sale will be taking place on the 22nd of June starting at 6pm BST (10am PT/1pm ET). Valve has yet to make an official announcement but then again this isn’t the first time that PayPal has made the announcement ahead of Valve, and so far all the dates have proven to be accurate so there’s no reason not to trust this announcement.

We’re not sure what we can expect from this year’s summer sale, but we reckon it won’t be too different from what we have seen in the past where games will be receiving some pretty huge discounts. There is no mention of which games might be featured as part of the sale, but the good news is that Steam customers in the UK who use PayPal will be able to get an additional £5 off any purchase of £20 or more.

There is no word on whether or not PayPal will extend this deal to customers in North America or other parts of the world, but here’s hoping they will. This deal also appears to last until the 5th of July which could also be a hint at when the Steam Summer Sale will be coming to an end.

Twitch And Blizzard Partner Up For Broadcasts

When it comes to video game streaming, Twitch is pretty much the default platform that many might think of. Sure there are alternatives such as YouTube Gaming, but for now Twitch is still a pretty dominant platform. In fact some companies such as Blizzard have even attempted their own services by allowing gamers to livestream onto Facebook.

However it looks like things are changing as Twitch and Blizzard have officially announced a partnership in which Twitch will be the official and exclusive third-party streaming platform for the company’s games. “From now through 2018, Twitch and Blizzard fans will get the legendary treatment. Twitch will be the exclusive third-party streaming platform for more than 20 Blizzard tournaments.”

According to Twitch, “The best place to watch Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and StarCraft II just became even better with tons of exclusive content (you’ll find all the details in our press release). You can also expect community events, and, of course, some sweet, sweet loot.”

Twitch has also announced that those who are Twitch Prime members can expect to receive an Overwatch Golden Loot Box that is guaranteed to contain a legendary item in addition to other in-game items, such as emotes, voice lines, and skins. Twitch Prime members can also expect to receive an additional 10 Loot Boxes over the course of the next few months, and this will also eventually be applied to Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone as well.

PayPal Launching Instant Money Transfer Feature To Your Bank

If you’ve ever transferred money from PayPal to your bank account, you know that it’s not necessarily an instantaneous process and could take a while, or even longer depending on the country you are living in. However over in the US, PayPal will be adding a new feature to its services that will facilitate instant money transfer to your bank account.

Announced on PayPal’s website, this is a feature that the company is testing out. “In that same spirit, PayPal users in the U.S. will soon be able to instantly transfer money to their bank accounts via eligible debit cards linked to their PayPal account. We expect that funds will typically be available in your bank account in a matter of minutes, although some banks may take up to 30 minutes.”

The feature will be made available to select PayPal users, and if successful it will be rolled out to all PayPal users in the US with an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card over the coming weeks and months. However there is a slight catch to using this service, and that is it will incur a $0.25 fee whenever you use the instant transfer feature.

This isn’t so different from some banks in certain parts of the world where opting to use instant transfer will incur a small fee, versus normal transfer methods which are either cheaper or in some cases even free, but if you desperately need the money or if you’re not too fussed, we guess $0.25 isn’t too much to ask.
