Neural Network Turns Flowers Into Dinosaurs

If there is one thing that I have learned, it is that imaging neural networks can produce some creepy results. But sometimes the results can be beautiful too. Chris Rodley used a deep learning algorithm to merge a book of dinosaurs with a book of flower paintings. The results are astounding and it is actually something approaching fine art.

Using the Deepart.io algorithm offers different results from Google’s Deep Dream, since it applies features of an artist’s visual style to another image. This keeps recognizable details and uses them to rebuild the target image from scratch.

So what you get are dinosaurs made out of flowers, fruit, tall ships, and other stuff. Basically he is creating fine art mashups. If you want prints to hang on your wall, you can reach out to Chris on his website.

Nyko Releases A Nintendo Switch Dock That’s Much Better

The Nintendo Switch’s dock works. Is it perfect? Not really, but it gets the job done. The only gripe that people have with the dock is that it reportedly traps heat and in some instances can lead to the console warping. It has also reportedly caused some Switch owners to experience scratches to their screen when sliding the console in and out of it.

It is also bulky, meaning that bringing it with you can be a pain, especially if you do not wish to invest in a separate USB-C cable. Unfortunately it is the only solution at the moment, or is it? During E3 2017, it seems that the folks at Nyko have taken the wraps off a dock designed for the Switch and as you can see in the photo above, appears to be a much better solution to what Nintendo is offering.

For starters it doesn’t “trap” your console inside the dock which means better overall ventilation. Even if warping wasn’t an issue, better ventilation is always welcome. Secondly it is considerably smaller than what Nintendo is offering at the moment, so if you wanted to charge your Switch while moving from place to place, this wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

The only drawback is the lack of USB ports, which means that plugging in the charging grip accessory is out of the question. However with it being priced at a suggested $45 (Nyko told ArsTechnica that it could drop ahead of its launch in September), it is more affordable than Nintendo’s dock which they’re selling separately for $90.

Nintendo Switch Update Helps You Find Missing Joy-Cons

The Joy-Con controllers on the Nintendo Switch are pretty small, which means that unless you remember to connect them back to the console everytime after use, or keep them attached to the grip accessory, there is a chance that you could easily misplace them, whether it be in your bag, the side of the couch, under the table, and so on.

Given how expensive it is to replace the Joy-Cons, safe to say that no one really relishes the idea of misplacing them. However the good news is that Nintendo has recently issued a major update for the Switch which should address the problem. Basically with the update, users will now be able to locate missing Joy-Cons. The idea is that if they’re located nearby, the Switch can force them to vibrate in hopes that the sound will help you locate them easily.

In addition to this feature, the update will also now allow gamers to plug in the Pro controller into the Switch via the USB port. This means that gamers will now be able to play with the Pro controller in wired mode if you’re trying to absolutely minimize any form of input lag. There are also a bunch of new features that are part of the update that will bring the console’s firmware up to version 3.0.0.

You’ll be able to find all the changes on Nintendo’s website, so head on over if you’d like to see what else is new with the console following the update.

Spotify Testing Out Sponsored Playlists

Spotify offers users two ways of listening to music: either via a free tier in which users have no control over music playback and have to listen to ads, or a paid tier in which for a monthly subscription fee, they can listen to whatever they want, save songs for offline listening, and more.

Like we said, ads are part of the free tier which is also how Spotify makes its money, and now in a report from TechCrunch, it looks like the company has found yet another way to monetize the free tier and it is through sponsored playlists. This was discovered in the settings menu in the form of “Sponsored Content” in which users could opt out of. However the company has since confirmed to TechCrunch that this is something that they are testing, and it is basically where labels can pay money to insert new songs or songs they want to promote into playlists on the free tier.

This means that these songs are more targeted compared to current methods of advertising which includes banner ads. For example if you enjoyed listening to rock, then any new upcoming rock singles that labels want to promote could be inserted into your rock playlists, which should in theory be more effective than trying to market a rock song to people who might prefer another genre.

Spotify has told TechCrunch that if this test is successful, it would be rolled out on a more official basis and would only appear to users on the free tier. It’s not a bad idea and for those who are on the lookout for new music, this could be a great way for them to discover what’s new, allow labels to promote, and allow Spotify to monetize the free tier without hindering the user experience, but what do you guys think?

AR/VR Headset Shipments Estimated To Hit 100 Million By 2021

It is no secret that in the future, technology such as augmented and virtual reality will be playing a big part of our lives.  For example VR gaming is starting to gain steam, while AR-based apps and devices such as Google’s Project Tango are allowing companies new ways of interacting with their customers.

In fact Apple recently decided to officially get into the AR game with the launch of ARKit, and last we heard they were working with IKEA on creating an app that will use AR to help homeowners to decide what furniture best suits their homes. So much so that according to a recent report from the IDC, they have estimated that by 2021, AR/VR headset shipments could hit as many as 100 million units.

This is a massive jump from the 10 million units last year, but the IDC claims that this will be thanks to companies such as Apple and Microsoft. “IDC believes VR headsets will continue to lead in terms of volume throughout the forecast, but maintains that AR in general will have a much bigger impact overall on the industry. Consumers are very likely to have their first AR experience via a mobile phone or tablet rather than a dedicated headset, and Apple’s recent introduction of ARKit further supports this.”

We have heard rumors that Apple could be developing some kind of headset of their own, although that has yet to materialize so take it with a grain of salt for now.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered Standalone Could Be Available Today

We have been hearing rumors that Activision could be getting ready to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered as a standalone title. This was thanks to a sighting on Amazon Japan which listed the game, and now thanks to a report from Charlie Intel, the launch could happen sooner than we thought.

According to information sent to them via their sources, it seems that Modern Warfare Remastered could be launched as soon as today, the 20th of June. Prior to this it was a toss up between the 20th of June and the 27th of June, but it looks like the 20th of June appears to be the date that the game will be launched on, so we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

It has also been revealed that the game will cost $39.99 which is slightly cheaper than newer titles, but it is still pretty expensive for a game that was released a while ago. However we have to admit that the remastering of the game was done pretty nicely and it does look like a brand new game, so if you did not buy Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare which also bundled Modern Warfare Remastered, we guess now’s your chance to get your hands on it.

In any case there has not been any confirmation yet so remember to check back with us later today to see if the game has indeed been released.

Galaxy Note 8 Launch Date Is Reportedly August 28th

There have already been multiple reports over the past couple of weeks that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Note 8 ahead of schedule. Many expect the company to come out with the new flagship handset in August instead of September. A new report out of South Korea today claims that this is precisely what the company is going to do. The report claims that the Galaxy Note 8 launch date is going to be August 26th.

Samsung has previously launched new Galaxy Note handsets at IFA. The convention takes place in Berlin every year, normally in September. That’s also where the Galaxy Note 7 was announced last year.

You can imagine why people initially believed that the Galaxy Note 8 was going to be announced at IFA 2017 in Berlin which takes place this September. However, if recent reports are believed, Samsung might have moved up the Galaxy Note 8 launch date.

It’s claimed that the launch event will take place in New York and that Samsung is in the process of finalizing the venue. Samsung has reportedly decided to advance the launch of its new flagship because it wants to have the Galaxy Note 8 out before Apple can launch the iPhone 8.

Samsung is yet to confirm anything about the Galaxy Note 8 launch date so we’ll have to wait for a couple of weeks before there can be any clarity on the matter.
