Sony has a rather strange relationship with consumer robotics lately. It’s definitely no stranger to them, having had at least two in the past. Now it is taking a more educational spin to these robots, but it isn’t going directly to the market. Toio, revealed last week, is on Sony’s internal “First Flight” crowdfunding platform. And now the KOOV coding … Continue reading

Last year luxury fashion brand Emporio Armani got into the smartwatch game by launching the Emporio Armani Connected. This device was more of a hybrid where it featured a traditional timepiece with some smart features, but it did represent how the company was looking to dip its toes into the water.
However it looks like the company has decided to dive straight in as they have since launched a new Android Wear smartwatch. The device in question has not yet been named, but it is powered by Android Wear and was recently revealed at the Milan Fashion Week. It is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor and will pretty much do what you might come to expect from such a device, and we’re guessing that the main appeal here would be the branding and design.
No word on how much Armani’s new Android Wear smartwatch will cost, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for more details regarding that and any other features that might set it apart from the competition. The launch of this smartwatch is part of the Fossil Group’s goal of launching as many as 300 smartwatches in 2017 alone.
Whether this will end up saturating the market remains to be seen, but for those who are more fashion-conscious, this new wearable from Armani will be one of the many options that you can expect to find this year.

When you think of Amazon, you might think of a giant online retailer that sells all kinds of things. You might also think of a company that sells ebooks and e-readers such as the Kindle, but not many would associate Amazon as a speaker company. However it seems that perception is slowly starting to change.
According to a recent report by Strategy Analytics, it seems that Amazon is now leading the way as far as WiFI powered speakers are concerned. A position that was once held by Sonos has since been taken over by Amazon, thanks to the company’s release of its Echo series of smart speakers that comes with a virtual assistant built into it.
However according to David Watkins, Director within the Intelligent Home Group at Strategy Analytics, he thinks that Apple would actually be more of a direct competitor to Sonos than Amazon. “Although Sonos is losing share as new players enter the Wi-Fi speaker space, its dominant position at the high-end of the market remains untouched. Apple’s upcoming HomePod speaker will pose more of a direct challenge to Sonos given the HomePod’s high price point and Apple’s decision to focus its marketing efforts on the speaker’s sound quality and music streaming capabilities rather than its ability to be controlled via Siri.”
Following the launch and the success of the Echo, we’ve seen companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple take a stab at creating smart speakers of their own. If the rumors are to be believed, Samsung could be working on one as well.

When Pokemon GO was first shown off, it was hinted that the game could see raid-like battles where groups of players could gather together to defeat enemies. However since the launch of the game, it has been mostly a single-player experience save for players fighting it out at gyms and trying to take them over or defend them.
However that has changed. In an announcement on the Pokemon GO website, Niantic has announced that the game will be getting a new Raid Battle feature. “All around the world, you’ll soon be able to participate in the new Raid Battle feature at Gyms. A Raid Battle is a cooperative gameplay experience that encourages you to work with other Trainers to defeat an extremely powerful Pokémon known as the Raid Boss.”
In order to participate in a Raid Battle, players will be required to own a Raid Pass. This pass can be gotten free by visiting a Gym but is limited to one per day, and players can only hold one at any time. There are also Premium Raid Passes that are available from the game shop, but that will cost you money. Each Raid Battle will allow a maximum of 20 other Trainers to take part in and give players a chance to catch extra powerful Pokemon.
According to Niantic, these changes will be instituted over the course of the next couple of weeks. In the meantime all Gyms will be temporarily disabled while the changes are being made, so do keep an eye out for it if this sounds like something you could be interested in.

Assuming Apple keeps to schedule, there’s a good chance that the new iPhones will be announced in September and could be released either late September or early October. If you’re hoping for more “proof” of that happening, not to worry as an Apple supplier has “confirmed” the iPhone 8’s launch for October.
In a report from Axios, a supplier by the name of Finisar has revealed during its earnings call that they expect one company to account for millions of purchases of its specialized laser known as VCSEL. While Finisar did not name the company explicitly, Loup Ventures has speculated that only one company might have a need for so many units of this component, and that is none other than Apple.
For those unfamiliar with why Apple might have the need for laser, it has been suggested that this could help further Apple’s augmented reality efforts, especially with the launch of ARKit. It is said to help with better depth-sensing and object mapping, and could potentially be used for facial recognition which is one of the rumored iPhone 8 features.
All of this seems to be in line with what we’ve been hearing so far, but whether or not this speculation is based on the rumors or if it has accurately predicted the iPhone 8’s launch window remains to be seen, so take it with a grain of salt. However if true, it looks like rumors that the iPhone 8 could be delayed might have been dispelled.

At the moment lithium-ion batteries are what is being used to power the majority of our electronic devices, but is it ideal? There are probably better solutions out there that have yet to be discovered, and from what we’re seeing, scientists have come up with all kinds of different batteries that have yet to become commercial solutions.
In theory it has been suggested that lithium-sulfur batteries could actually be more ideal for powering electronics, given that they have twice the energy density and are cheaper to produce. The only problem is that sulfur dissolves, which means that your battery won’t last you as long as you would like, but researchers might have found an answer to that problem in the form of seaweed.
To be more specific, scientists have discovered that a derivative of red seaweed, carrageenan, can actually help to stabilize a lithium-sulfur battery and make it more practical for use in devices. The carrageenan is said to act as a binder/”glue” that helps to keep the battery’s active materials together and when reacting with the sulfur, it prevents it from dissolving.
This could help create batteries that could last thousands of charging cycles, which could mean that batteries end up lasting longer in terms of lifespan than what is offered at the moment. That being said, it will probably be a while before we see it commercialized as the researchers need to figure out how the derivative interacts with sulfur and if the process is reversible.
