Could Jeff Bezos Fix Our Broken Food System? Alice Waters Thinks So.

Alice Waters is a critically acclaimed chef and sustainability pioneer, so there’s no one better to remind Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos that he is responsible for making real change in the food world.

Having spent her life trying to transition the food system back to a local, organic focus, Waters sees Amazon’s pending purchase of Whole Foods as a huge opportunity.

Waters voiced that opinion by penning an open letter to Bezos and sharing it on Twitter.

With its purchase of Whole Foods Market, Amazon is hoping to compete with Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer. Walmart’s e-commerce sales grew 63 percent year-over-year, and it now plans to add online ordering with curbside pickup in over 1,000 locations. Amazon’s grocery attempts, on the other hand, have not been very successful, which is why its purchase of Whole Foods is an interesting one.

Whole Foods currently has 431 stores nationwide ― and it is a beloved option for organic produce and local products already. With the financial backing of Amazon behind it, it could further delve into this market and support local foods in a real way.

We hope you’re listening, Bezos.

Researchers train drones to use Wi-Fi to look through walls

A new system by University of California, Santa Barbara researchers Yasamin Mostofi and Chitra R. Karanam uses two drones, a massive Wi-Fi antenna, and a little interpolation to literally see through solid walls. The system is two-fold. The one drone blasts Wi-Fi through the structure and another picks up the signal. Then, working in tandem, the two drones fly around the solid structure until… Read More

Apple Music Annual Subscription Tier Added

There are multiple tiers that you can select when you decide to subscribe to Apple Music. The company already offers monthly and family subscription plans but it hasn’t offered an annual tier, until now. Apple has quietly added a new annual subscription tier for its music streaming service. Apple appears to have gone out of its way to hide this tier as it’s not prominently listed in the app.

Apple Music subscribers can currently opt for the $9.99 per month subscription package or the $14.99 per month family plan. Students can subscribe to the service for a discounted rate of $4.99 per month. The company has quietly added a $99 annual subscription plan to the lineup as well.

Those who are not existing Apple Music subscribers will not be able to find this tier when they sign up for the service initially. They will only be able to subscribe to the monthly plans mentioned above.

Existing subscribers can head over to membership settings and then switch over to the annual tier. This means that new subscribers will first have to purchase a monthly subscription before they’re allowed to switch.

To find this option, you need to launch the App Store app first and then scroll down to the bottom of the Featured tab. Enter the Apple ID and password before tapping on “View Apple ID.” Tap on the Subscriptions button next and then switch the membership tier.

If you don’t want to go through all of that aggravation, just buy a $99 Apple Music gift card which also provides a year’s worth of service.

Star Trek Discovery Premiere Date Confirmed

CBS announced the new Star Trek Discovery series last year. It was originally aiming to premiere the show early this year but the production was met with a couple of delays which pushed the premiere forward. Production on the series did not start until late January this year. CBS later said that it was more important to perform this task right than to do it fast. It appears to be done with it now as the network has now confirmed the Star Trek Discovery premiere date.

CBS has confirmed that it’s going to start airing its new Star Trek series from September 24th, 2017. Now that a final premiere date has been confirmed, it’s unlikely that there will be any further delays.

The new Star Trek series stars Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou while Sonequa Martin-Green plays her First Officer, Michael Burnham. The new series has 15 episodes, the first airs on September 24th.

The first half of the season will run through November 5th every Sunday at 8:30 PM ET on CBS. The second half of the season contains episodes 8-15 and will be aired starting January 2018.

CBS has made the Star Trek Discovery exclusive to its CBS All Access online streaming service but it’s going to air the first episode on the CBS network as well. Fans who want to follow the show will then have to subscribe to the service if they feel it worth the extra money.
