Baby Born on Indian Airline Given A Lifetime Of Free Travel

The sky’s the limit for a baby boy born on an Indian airline over the weekend, earning him free plane tickets for life.

Jet Airways announced the generous birthday present after its future jet-setter was delivered on one of their flights from Saudi Arabia to India on Sunday, CNN reported.

The baby boy’s mother was reportedly flying to the southwest Indian city of Kochi when she went into labor prematurely.

The flight was diverted to Mumbai where the mother and baby were transferred to a hospital. There, they are said to be doing well, the airline told the BBC in a statement.

“Jet Airways commends its crew for their response and promptness that saw them successfully translate their training into life-saving action,” the airline said.

In a social media post celebrating the baby’s arrival, Jet Airways shared a mock Father’s Day letter written by their newest passenger to his father. In it, the airline confirmed their gift of “a lifetime of free travel.”

“This means more travel is on the cards, more fun outings with you and mom, and more of exploring this beautiful world,” the letter reads.

This was the first time a baby was born on one of their planes, Jet said in a statement. But of course, it has happened before on other carriers: Earlier this year, a woman gave birth on a Turkish Airlines flight.

Although airlines gifting free travel to babies born on flights is known to happen ― as it has for this lucky Jet Airways baby ― there’s no truth to the rumor that such gifts are a general rule, as Snopes reports. Instead, it’s entirely up to an airline to make such a call.

Michael B. Jordan Vows To Fight For Change: 'I Am Philando Castile'

Just days after former Minnesota officer Jeronimo Yanez was found not guilty in the death of Philando Castile, Michael B. Jordan is speaking out about the acquittal.

The “Black Panther” actor expressed that he felt “helpless” but vowed to take action in an Instagram post on Sunday. The image he used was an illustration of Castile and a quote from his mother next to a list of 14 other black people who died as a result of encounters with police or a neighborhood watchman but never received justice.

“They want us to feel helpless & right now I feel it,” Jordan wrote. “How do we unify? Where do we turn? What do we do? How do we fight? How do we stand? I don’t have the answers but I know I’m going to be a part of the change, and not just today, everyday until we see real change … I am Philando Castile.”

Castile’s case is the latest in which a police officer escaped conviction. Yanez pulled Castile’s car over in July 2016 after saying over a police scanner that he intended on stopping the 32-year-old because his “wide-set nose” looked like that of a robbery suspect’s.

When the cop stopped him, Castile informed him that he had a licensed gun in the car, according to his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds. Yanez told him not to reach for it. Castile said that he was reaching for his identification papers, as instructed, Reynolds said. Yanez then shot Castile seven times while his seatbelt was on, with Reynolds and her daughter watching. Reynolds livestreamed the final moments of Castile’s life.

Yanez testified in court that he was scared for his life and “had no other choice.”

In a press conference after the verdict, Castile’s mother, Valerie, shared her hurt and anger about the decision.

“The system in this country continues to fail black people and will continue to fail us,” she said outside the courtroom. “My son loved this city, and this city killed my son. And a murderer gets away.”

J.K. Rowling Condemns Anti-Muslim Hate After Attack On London Mosque-Goers

J.K. Rowling wrote the (children’s fantasy) book about the damage caused by sowing hate toward outsiders and division, so it’s no surprise she’s disgusted by anti-Muslim rhetoric.

In a horrific van attack on a crowd leaving a mosque in London’s Finsbury Park neighborhood late Sunday night, several people were injured and one man, who had reportedly become ill before the attack began, was left dead. Witnesses said a white, middle-aged man steered the van into a group of people who had been attending Ramadan services at the mosque. The man reportedly exited the van and shouted “I want to kill all Muslims” before being detained by bystanders.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has already described the event as an act of terrorism that targeted the Muslim community. In a statement, she urged British citizens to turn to unity.

But recent months have seen a rise in anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric across Western nations, including the U.K. Rowling was quick to comment on the vitriol toward Islam that preceded the attack ― and the framing of the Finsbury Park incident in The Daily Mail.

“The Mail has misspelled ‘terrorist’ as ‘white van driver.’ Now let’s discuss how he was radicalised,” she wrote alongside a screenshot.

Rowling noted that certain outlets continued to direct blame at the mosque, which had just seen its worshippers targeted in a violent terrorist attack despite its well-documented work in combating extremism.

“Victim blaming in the usual newspapers is disgusting,” she wrote.

But she didn’t stop there: Rowling hasn’t forgotten the anti-Muslim rhetoric that many prominent political figures in the U.K. have recently spread. She used messaging from conservative British politician Nigel Farage, shown in one image standing next to a pro-Brexit ad accused of sowing racial hatred, to illustrate her point.

Challenged by British radio journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer, Rowling masterfully smacked down the hypocrisy of fixating on Islamist clerics who demonize Western values while deflecting any responsibility for demonizing Muslims, pointing out the subtle yet influential ways anti-immigration politicos gin up fear and hatred toward refugees and immigrants from the Middle East.

What’s bad for the goose is bad for the gander, Rowling suggested ― if Britons fear the influence of clerics who preach hatred toward white, secular societies, then it must also follow that politicians preaching fear and resentment toward Muslims, refugees and immigrants might also have the power to incite violence.

”Those who dehumanise & stereotype muslims have no moral high ground from which to deplore demonisation of secular westerners by Islamists,” the author stated.

She certainly has a point.

Kaley Cuoco is now a silver fox.

The “Big Bang Theory” actress debuted an icy new look a few days ago and she ― and her fans ― are loving it.

“Thank you @faye.woods for giving me some dreamy sherbet hair,” the actress wrote on Instagram, showing off her new locks and accompanying unicorn necklace.

A post shared by @normancook on Jun 15, 2017 at 6:35pm PDT

Fans couldn’t get enough of Cuoco’s “dreamy” new hair.

“Stunning,” one follower wrote, while another cheekily added, “Cant wait for Sheldon’s reaction.”

A post shared by @normancook on Jun 16, 2017 at 1:13pm PDT

A few weeks before she added silver to her hair, Cuoco’s hairstylist dyed her hair an icy blonde (perhaps in preparation for the big change):

A post shared by faye.woods (@faye.woods) on Jun 2, 2017 at 5:01pm PDT

This isn’t the first time the actress has sported a color other than blonde, as Cuoco debuted cotton candy pink hair a few years ago:

A post shared by @normancook on Apr 28, 2015 at 4:36pm PDT

Cuoco has said before that she loves to switch up her look , especially after she finishes filming for her hit TV show.

“It’s very important for me to change my look after wrapping each season,” the actress said in an Instagram caption last year. “I love playing Penny, but it’s good for me to bring it back to Kaley last year I chopped it all off – this year I’m doing the opposite.”

These 'Pollution' Popsicles Are Freaking Us Out

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

This story is part of a series on ocean plastics.

Imagine unwrapping a frosty popsicle on a hot, sticky day and finding a brick of polluted ice, complete with bits of frozen trash stinking of sewage.

Three students from the National Taiwan University of Arts recently created a batch of such popsicles from dirty water. But their gross treats aren’t meant to be eaten ― instead, they aim to raise awareness for Taiwan’s overwhelming pollution issue.

Hung I-chen, Guo Yi-hui, and Cheng Yu-ti collected waste from 100 locations and froze the samples into ice pops, which were preserved with polyester resin to keep them from melting.

These Polluted Water Popsicles come wrapped in flashy packaging meant to contrast the filth found inside, and each “flavor” bears the name of the source from which its water was collected. Many contain sewage and particles of trash, reflecting the fact that nearly 60 percent of Taiwan’s 50 main rivers are polluted to some degree.

Plastic accounted for about 90 percent of the garbage that the design team came across, according to Mashable. Wrappers, bottle caps, plastic bags, plastic bottles and other detritus can be seen inside many of the frozen desserts.

All this trash eventually flows into the sea, and the issue of water pollution is hardly unique to Taiwan. Environmentalists are growing increasingly concerned about the amount of plastic getting dumped in our oceans.

While an exact figure is challenging to nail down, there may be over 150 million tons of plastic in marine waters today, according to a report released last year by the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. At this rate, there will be more plastic than fish (by weight) in the ocean by 2050.

Meanwhile, “Polluted Water Popsicles” has caught the attention of critics in Taiwan. The project was nominated for the Young Pin Design Award, a prestigious honor for budding designers, and the toxic pops were featured in an exhibit at the Taipei World Trade Center last month.

Take a closer look at the popsicles from this project, below.

The world’s been waiting with bated breath for details about Beyoncé and Jay Z’s twins since way before she gave birth over the weekend.

But we have to give credit where credit is due, and we cannot focus our attention on these twins without first acknowledging Beyoncé’s killer pregnancy style.

Bey blessed the masses repeatedly this pregnancy, with appearances and Instagrams from her infamous pregnancy announcement to her trademark slideshows. Every red carpet moment, mommy-and-me look and sporting event stunner was more ***flawless than the last.

So, while we wait to welcome to new babies, let’s look back at some of Queen Bey’s best pregnancy style moments.

Family Demands Answers After Seattle Police Shoot And Kill Pregnant Mother

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

The family of Charleena Lyles is demanding answers after the 30-year-old black mother was shot and killed by two white Seattle police officers responding to her call for help.

Lyles called police on Sunday, reportedly asking them to investigate a robbery. Two officers arrived and fired their service weapons at Lyles after she allegedly displayed a knife, police said. She died on the scene.

Lyles was pregnant with her fifth child and had been experiencing mental health issues, according to her family. Three of her children were in the apartment when police opened fire, though it’s unclear if they witnessed the shooting, Seattle Police Department Det. Mark Jamieson told reporters on Sunday.

“There is no reason for her to be shot in front of her babies,” Monika Williams, Lyles’ sister, said Sunday. “She had mental health issues that nobody is trying to address.”

According to her relatives, Lyles worried that her children were going to be taken away from her. The children at home on the day of the shooting are now being cared for by family members.

Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, Reuters reports. Typically, the Seattle Police Department would only dispatch one officer to respond to a burglary report, but a recent police encounter with Lyles had prompted a second officer to respond, Jamieson said.

Reuters reports that Lyles was arrested on June 5 after threatening police with “large kitchen scissors” and calling them “devils and also members of the KKK.” Police had drawn their weapons during that incident, though one officer managed to convince Lyles to drop the scissors. She was released from King County jail last week.

Lyles’ brother, Domico Jones, told The Seattle Times that family members had tried to help Lyles as her mental health deteriorated over the past year. She has a 4-year-old daughter with Down syndrome who requires “round-the-clock attention,” he said.

It’s unclear whether police officers employed any de-escalation tactics during the incident, but Lyles’ relatives want answers.

“Even if my sister had a knife in her hand, she weighs like nothing, even if she’s soaking wet,” Williams said.

“There’s no way you could’ve taken a Taser and taken her down?” she asked. “There’s no way you could’ve taken a baton and knocked the knife out of her hand?”

Both officers were equipped with less-lethal force options, per department policy, according to a statement issued Monday by the Seattle Police Department. The department also released audio from the officers’ dashboard camera on Monday. In the recording, officers can be heard repeatedly shouting “Get back!” before gunshots ring out.

“While recognizing that the release of information can be source of tension during active, ongoing investigations, SPD also believes that transparency throughout the investigation of deadly force incidents is essential to maintaining public trust,” the department stated.

Lyles’ death marks the latest accusation against the Seattle Police Department of excessive use of force. In 2011, a comprehensive Department of Justice investigation found the department had engaged in a pattern of using excessive force. The report expressed “serious concern” that the department’s practices could result in “unlawful discriminatory policing.”

The Justice Department ordered the Seattle Police Department to implement reforms that would ensure accountability and eliminate unlawful bias.

The department did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment.

On Sunday evening, family, friends and community members gathered outside the apartment complex where Lyles was killed. Members of the crowd held up signs reading “Say Her Name” and “Black Lives Matter.”

“We want justice!” they chanted.

The 'Big Brother 19' Cast Includes A Rodeo Clown And A Cosplay Artist

One surefire sign that summer has landed: “Big Brother.” CBS’ annual reality show, in which strangers locked in a house scheme to win $500,000, announced its 19th roster on Monday.

CBS revealed 16 new houseguests, the same number of contestants that have competed during each of the past five seasons. It appears this go-round will not invite previous cast members to return, as some seasons have, though CBS has yet to disclose the twists that will complicate the rules.

Based on photos alone, it’s hard to tell which houseguest will be this year’s token gay. But rest assured there is a token old person ― a 55-year-old stay-at-home dad ― and plenty of eclectic occupations, namely rodeo clown, cosplay artist and dog walker. There’s also a “fitness superstar” named Christmas.

Ahead of the two-night premiere on June 28 and 29, meet the “Big Brother 19” cast below and start logging your predictions for the fiercest competitors. You can also read our oral history of the show here

The Not-So-Secret Truth About the Senate GOP's Secret Health Care Bill

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Senate Republicans are hurling themselves toward passing an incredibly unpopular set of health care reforms that even they don’t understand, haven’t seen and likely won’t see until just before it hits the floor.

This rightly has raised the hackles not only of Senate Democrats and the media, but anyone who values transparency in government or is anxious about about the consequences of reordering the American health care system and taking away health coverage from millions of people.

But as important as the legislation’s details will turn out out to be, there’s a simple, fundamental, incontrovertible fact about whatever the Senate health care reform bill winds up looking like: The purpose of this bill is to dramatically scale back the safety net so wealthy people and health care companies can get a massive tax cut.

It’s the biggest open secret about the secret Senate health care bill.

That’s true of the House-passed version of the American Health Care Act, which the Congressional Budget Office projects would lead to 23 million fewer people being uninsured over the next decade, severely weaken protections for people with pre-existing conditions and put health coverage out of reach for older, sicker and poorer people who won’t be able to afford insurance or, in some cases, to even access it at any price.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his handpicked cohort of backroom negotiators are advancing a measure that will look pretty much like the House legislation and do pretty much the same thing. McConnell wants a vote before July 4, and he’ll probably get it if something doesn’t alter the trajectory.

There’s been a lot of talk about the Senate “moderates” balking at the most regressive parts of the House bill and halfheartedly complaining about McConnell’s opaque process as though they’re powerless to influence it. But if the past behavior of so-called moderates can inform predictions about what they’ll do this time, the smart money’s on them giving in when push comes to shove.

Yes, the details are important, especially to anyone anxious about how this bill would affect their lives. But it’s not as though the Senate is proposing to increase assistance for people who don’t have the money to buy health insurance, or to provide targeted help for those whose premiums have risen beyond their means under the Affordable Care Act.

There’s no way McConnell unveils a bill that fixes what’s wrong with the health care system, a scenario that might prompt Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to join him in a duet of “I Got You Babe” on the Senate floor. There’s no way this ends with a new law that ensures people have access to decent, affordable health insurance and a safety net to catch them during hard times.

Whatever else the bill might be, it’s still an effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act because Republicans don’t believe rich people and corporations should have to pay so that poor, middle-income or sick people can go to the doctor.

The Affordable Care Act is an assertion of the opposite, that society has a collective responsibility for, and derives a mutual benefit from, promoting access to health care and providing the mechanism and the money to do so. The law hasn’t done everything it set out to do, and didn’t even attempt to achieve truly universal health care, but it still extended health coverage to about 20 million previously uninsured people and drove down to a historic low the share of the population without health coverage.

Whenever senators finish their secret dealmaking and the public has a bill to review ― if not stop it before Congress and President Donald Trump rush to make it law and have another party in the Rose Garden ― there’s not going to be much difference from the unloved House-passed bill no one seems to like. That includes Trump, who reportedly told senators he believes it to be “mean.”

The question isn’t whether GOP senators choose to preserve gains in coverage, but just how much of it they’re willing to take away.

We aren’t be talking about senators from states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act fighting to save it, but about how many years they want to wait before the Medicaid expansion disappears.

The senators aren’t going to retain the guarantee of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, because they’ll relax other insurance regulations in a way making that moot. A promise that insurers have to offer coverage to, for example, a cancer patient is worthless if the insurance doesn’t have to cover cancer treatments or if there are annual and lifetime limits to an insurance policy’s benefits.

There may be Republican senators who aren’t ready to commit in public to supporting the health care bill, citing the opacity of McConnell’s process. But the rest of us already have enough information to make up our minds about it.
