Valerie Jarrett, Tina Tchen Are Now Leading Women In The Resistance

NEW YORK― President Donald Trump is rolling back several of the hard-won women’s rights victories of the Obama administration. But two of former President Barack Obama’s top female advisors are organizing women across the country to fight back.

Valerie Jarrett and Tina Tchen, who spearheaded the White House Council on Women and Girls under Obama, are launching a program to harness the passion displayed at the historic Women’s March on Washington in January and turn it into grassroots political action. The Galvanize Program, a continuation of the United State of Women Summit that touted Obama’s achievements in 2016, will host mini-summits in six cities across the country to inspire women and help them to organize, run for office and fight for change.

“As President Obama said, once you leave the White House you still have the most important office of all, and that’s the office of citizen,” Jarrett told HuffPost in an interview Thursday. “I’ve been using the bully pulpit to continue to talk about the importance of gender equity. I worry deeply about the lives that are gonna be adversely affected by changes in policy.”

The program will focus on many aspects of gender equity, including reproductive rights, ending gender-based violence, equal pay and paid family leave. But Jarrett and Tchen are particularly concerned about the GOP push to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Obama’s signature health care law, which prevented insurance companies from charging women more just for being women. The law popularly known as Obamacare also required employers to cover the full range of preventative services for women ― such as contraception, well-woman visits and breast examinations― in their insurance plans with no copay.

“We are now seeing the lowest rates of unplanned pregnancy in our country, so the idea that we’re going to lose all of that in the Republican plan is unthinkable,” Tchen said.

The first summit is due to take place in Chicago in July, where Jarrett, Tchen and a diverse group of women’s rights activists and state politicians will give local women the tools to be effective leaders in a political movement. Speakers include Illinois Democratic State Sens. Toi Hutchinson and Juliana Stratton, and Jennifer Welch, CEO of Planned Parenthood Illinois. Chicago is a symbolic place for the tour to begin, not only because it’s the hometown of Obama and Jarrett.

“Chicago is home to a vibrant community of activists, especially people who have worked on gender equality issues, and it’s center of the country,” Tchen said. “It speaks to Middle America and to the values we want to see across the country. It was a really natural starting place.”

The program will host similar summits in Columbus, Atlanta, Miami, Albuquerque, and Philadelphia.

While Tchen and Jarrett are frustrated to see certain setbacks for women under Trump, they still believe the Obama administration permanently advanced the cause of equity by showing women what equitable health care and a feminist president looks like. Now, women are motivated to fight for rights like insurance coverage of contraception because they saved $1.4 billion on copays in the first year the benefit was in place.

“Changing attitudes is a lot of what we did,” Tchen said, “and that’s going to outlast any attempt to undo the policy.”

The Office For Civil Rights Issues New Rules Regarding Transgender Students

After the Department of Education and the Department of Justice rescinded Obama administration guidance regarding transgender students in February, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has received new guidance on how to deal with cases of discrimination against transgender students.

The instructions, issued to employees last week, say officials should rely on “Title IX and its implementing regulations … in evaluating complaints of sex discrimination against individuals whether or not the individual is transgender.”

The Los Angeles Times first reported that OCR employees were given new instructions about how to investigate transgender issues.

An employee familiar with the guidance ― which was obtained by HuffPost and can be read in full below ― says he interprets this to mean that officials should investigate issues of discrimination just as they would have before the Obama-era rules were implemented.

The Obama administration called on school districts to treat a student’s gender identity as their sex. After rescinding this guidance, Trump administration agencies sent a letter saying the issue should be decided at the local level.

Groups that advocate for LGBTQ students are meeting with Department of Education officials Friday morning for more clarification.

When Will Smith’s first child, Trey, was born, he had one thought: Now what do I do?

Like many first-time parents, Smith felt a bit overwhelmed the moment doctors placed his son in his arms. As Smith told “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1997, he couldn’t believe fatherhood didn’t come with any instructions. “I have a television that has picture-in-picture, and the manual is this big,” he said, gesturing. “The doctor gave me a baby and said, ‘All right, man, take care!’”

But while new moms and dads like Smith are so focused on learning the ropes, they often don’t realize the fundamental changes parenthood can have with regards to their personalities and perspectives. This is what many dads expressed when talking with Oprah about fatherhood over the years.

In the above supercut, Smith and his fellow famous fathers ― including Chris Rock, Bono and Michael Jordan ― open up about how being a dad changed them and their perspectives on both parenting and the world as a whole.

DeMario Jackson's Ex Comes To His Defense After Exposing Him On TV

Embattled “Bachelor in Paradise” contestant DeMario Jackson has found an unlikely supporter: the ex-girlfriend who exposed him as a liar on national TV.

Jackson faces allegations that he engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts with fellow contestant Corinne Olympios during filming of ABC’s “Bachelor” spinoff in Mexico. Both parties released conflicting statements this week about the evening in question, and now Jackson’s former flame, Lexi Thexton, is weighing in.

In a video statement released via TMZ, Thexton claims that Jackson wouldn’t take advantage of someone who’s unconscious, as some reports have described Olympios, despite labeling him a “30-year-old man-child and a “shitty guy.”

Thexton previously made a surprise appearance on the current season of “The Bachelorette,” where Jackson had been competing for affection of Rachel Lindsay. In a dramatic confrontation, Thexton revealed that she and Jackson had dated right before the show, prompting Lindsay to swiftly boot him from the competition.

“I was not at all shocked that he got wasted and got involved in some drama, but it doesn’t sound to me like he was predatory or like an aggressor,” Thexton said. “It sounds like the situation got messy.”

After a producer reportedly filed a complaint about the incident, production on the upcoming season of “Bachelor in Paradise” was temporarily shut down to allow for an official investigation.

Olympios has since tapped top Hollywood attorney Marty Singer as her legal counsel and, in a statement released earlier this week, she told a story very different from Thexton’s, describing herself as a victim.

“I have little memory of that night, something bad obviously took place, which I understand is why production on the show has now been suspended,” Olympios’ statement read. “As a woman, this is my worst nightmare and it has now become my reality.”

Jackson maintains that the incident was consensual, and believes he’s now the victim of character assassination.

Watch Thexton confront Jackson on “The Bachelorette” below.

NakeFit's Sticky Pads For Your Feet Could Eliminate The Need For Sandals

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Summer’s hottest accessory for your feet is here, and it’s not what you’d expect.

Meet NakeFit, a hypoallergenic adhesive pad that admittedly looks a little bit goofy, but could save your feet from the scorching rays of the sun and all kinds of cuts.

“Imagine a world where you could just jump and run around without worrying about being barefoot,” a promotional video for the products says. “NakeFit is the ultimate way of protecting your feet in every circumstance.”

The stick-on sole protector promises to protect your precious feet from rocks, hot sand, slipping at the pool and from the gross floor at the spa. Just stick them on and when you’re done with them, peel them off.

“Forget about carrying around stupid flip flops and sandals,” the video for NakeFit so boldly declares.

People probably aren’t ready to throw away their sandals just yet, but considering the NakeFit’s Kickstarter got $163,205 ― way beyond its goal of $22,292 ― people seem excited about the product. NakeFit currently comes in three colors (black, pink and blue) and it looks like the earliest people can receive the product after they’ve preordered it is July 2017.

Just keep in mind that podiatrists don’t approve of flip-flops because of their lack of support, so going nearly barefoot likely isn’t any better.

Dr. Alex Kor, president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, told HuffPost in an interview last year that the most important feature in any shoe is something called the shank, which provides structure for the arch of your foot. Flip-flops don’t have this, which means they supply limited support for your feet ― and NakeFit provides even less support.

Number Of Multiracial, Multiethnic Babies Has Tripled In 35 Years: Report

There’s been an increase in multiracial babies born in the U.S. in recent years, a new report states.

New analysis from Pew Research indicates that the number of multiracial or multiethnic infants has tripled since 1980, making up 14 percent of infants born in 2015. The growth coincides with the rise of interracial marriages, which has more than doubled in that time as well.

Pew’s data shows that 42 percent of multiracial and multiethnic babies are born from one white parent and one hispanic parent, the most common mix. Babies from one Asian and one white parent make up 14 percent, with infants born from one black and one white parent making up 10 percent.

Sharon Chang, author of “Raising Mixed Race: Multiracial Asian Children In a Post-Racial World,” told HuffPost that data about mixed race children is significant as it highlights the diversity of experiences in the United States beyond just single-race background.

“We have to notice the narrative,” she said. “Our stories have so much nuance and depth.”

When looking at populations across the country, states showed dramatically different demographics. Hawaii had a particularly high concentration of multiracial or multiethnic children, who made up 44 percent of the state’s infants in 2015. But in Vermont, the group only made up 4 percent of babies that year.

Researchers say that the trend is consistent with the country’s increase in racial and ethnic diversity. The public’s opinion of multiracial or multiethnic children seems to reflects the group’s population increase with about 22 percent of American adults saying that more children with parents of different races was positive for society. About 11 percent said it’s negative. The majority of Americans, however, believe it doesn’t make much of a difference.

Of course, the rise of multiracial or multiethnic babies won’t quickly result in the elimination of racial inequalities, Chang pointed out.

“The mere fact of birthing a multiracial child does not suddenly reconcile centuries of unreconciled racist history, immediately erase inequity and solve systemic oppression,” she explained.

Moreover, while researching for her book, the author found that parents of multiracial or multiethnic children could still retain their own biases, particularly if they are unwilling to engage in conversations surrounding race. So using those of multiracial or multiethnic backgrounds as absolute evidence for social progress can be dangerous, Chang believes.

“Choosing to buy into the dominant post-racial narrative that ‘mixed race equals the end of race’ is a deflect from the real racial problems we continue to face.”
