Jury In Cosby Trial Deadlocked, Judge Instructs Them To Keep Deliberating

By Joseph Ax

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (Reuters) – The jurors at comedian Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial said on Thursday they were deadlocked after more than 30 hours of deliberations.

“We cannot come to a unanimous consensus on any of the counts,” said the jury’s note to Judge Steven O’Neill in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Jurors began discussing the charges late on Monday and worked 12-hour days on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

In response, O’Neill gave a standard instruction that the jurors should continue to try to reach a verdict without compromising any of their individual beliefs.

Cosby, the 79-year-old entertainer once beloved for his brand of family-friendly comedy, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Temple University administrator Andrea Constand, then 31, at his home near Philadelphia in 2004.

Constand is one of dozens of women who have accused the star of the 1980s hit TV comedy “The Cosby Show” of assaulting them, often after plying them with pills and alcohol, in a series of incidents over four decades.

Constand’s allegations are the only ones to result in criminal charges, with many of the others too old to allow for prosecution. Cosby has denied every claim, saying his encounters with Constand and others were consensual.

A hung jury would be a clear victory for Cosby, who would avoid what could have been years in prison for three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

The jurors appeared unable to agree on which version of the night in question was accurate: Constand’s or Cosby’s. They have spent days asking to have testimony read back, including Constand’s trial testimony as well as the first report she made to police in 2005.

The jury also revisited Cosby’s description of the night from sworn depositions he gave in 2005 and 2006 during a civil lawsuit by Constand and a police interview he conducted in 2005. Cosbydid not testify.

Defense lawyers during the trial emphasized discrepancies in Constand’s statements to police in 2005 in an effort to undermine her credibility.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, used her testimony as well as the words of a second accuser, Kelly Johnson, to portray Cosby as a serial predator. Johnson told jurors Cosby sexually assaulted her in strikingly similar fashion in 1996.

In his decade-old depositions, Cosby said he gave Constand Benadryl, a common allergy drug whose side effects can include drowsiness. He called the pills her “friends” without telling her what they were, and admitted to giving other young women Quaaludes, a sedative, in the 1970s.

Exactly What To Do This Summer To Have Gorgeous Skin Forever

Soaking up some rays is an ideal way to spend a summer day. But if you’re going for beautiful skin in the long run, managing sun exposure is critical.

“The number one thing that causes [skin] problems is the sun,”Janellen Smith, dermatology professor at the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine, told HuffPost. “So if you can protect yourself from the sun, that is a good thing for longevity of your skin.”

Too much sun exposure over time can lead to a higher risk of skin cancer and premature signs of aging like wrinkles. Luckily, there are a few ways to protect your body that don’t involve shielding yourself from the outdoors.

Check out Smith’s tips below on how to enjoy the sunshine but still keep your skin healthy for years to come:

Take sunscreen seriously.

Use sunscreen and reapply it often, especially after sweating, swimming or toweling off, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You should also make sure your lotion has an SPF of at least 15, but it wouldn’t hurt to do more.

“Most people don’t actually put on enough, so we like to say 30 SPF,” Smith said. As a rule of thumb, she recommends applying one ounce of sunscreen from head to toe, which is about the size of a shot glass.

Wear light, protective clothing.

Clothing is considered the first line of defense against the sun, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. But a loose, open weave shirt won’t cut it. The best sun protective clothing has a thick, tight weave, such as denim or twill. But denim? In the summer? It probably makes you sweat just thinking about it.

Some companies like Coolibar and Cabana Life make clothes with an ultraviolet protection factor, which is the measurement of UV rays that can penetrate the skin while wearing the garment. In theory, a tunic with UPF of 50 would allow only one-fiftieth of the sun’s UV radiation to get to your skin.

Of course, you can also always wear what you’ve got. If you play an outside sport like golf or tennis, consider lightweight shirts with long sleeves.

Invest in a bigger hat and sunglasses.

Hats with a brim are a better choice for skin longevity than a baseball cap, Smith said. Wider-brim hats not only shade the face, but the back of the neck and ears.

It’s also a good idea to invest in some shades. The skin around your eyes is very tender and easily damaged by sun exposure, according to the CDC. So keep that area covered and reap the benefits in the long run.

Keep your skin moisturized.

Drinking plenty of water can help keep the skin healthy and hydrated. And a consistent moisturizing routine can help trap water in, too. Smith recommends applying moisturizer within 15 to 20 minutes after you get out of the shower. (Bonus points if you use a product with SPF in it.)

Enjoy a well rounded diet.

Research shows that nutritional deficiencies can cause dry, flaky skin. And while most diets for perfect complexion are pretty bogus, it’s a good idea to consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oils and fats, Smith said. This guarantees you’re staying healthy from the inside out.

Take these tips to heart and then enjoy your time outdoors, whether that’s gardening, swimming or just a stroll through the neighborhood. Research shows that spending time outside can help people age more gracefully

Go on, soak up that sun.

Microsoft Maluuba AI Dominates Atari 2600 Ms. Pac-Man

I had an Atari 2600 back in the day, and one of the game I played a whole a lot of was Ms. Pac-Man. I sucked at it. I got devoured by ghosts constantly, and never racked up much of a high score. Microsoft’s Maluuba AI on the other hand is a dominating Ms. Pac-Man player.

Maluuba taught its AI how to play the Atari VCS version of the game using multiple reinforcement learning algorithms, and the system was able to get the highest score possible in the game of 999,990. I have no idea why that is the highest score possible in the game. You’d think you could keep going if you wanted to.

Ms. Pac-Man is much harder to play than original Pac-Man, and is apparently not as predictable as the original game, making paths to victory more complex. Watch the video for more details, this is one serious arcade gaming AI.

Twitter Announces Major Redesign

After refreshing its brand in a significant way last year, Twitter has acted on the feedback it has received from users and introduced an entirely new look for the microblogging service today. The new look has been created with the idea of making Twitter feel lighter, faster, and easier to use. The new changes will be rolled out across Twitter on the web, Twitter for iOS and Android, Twitter Lite, and TweetDeck.

There’s a new side navigation menu which will bring profile, additional accounts, settings, and privacy in one place. This means there will be fewer apps at the bottom of the web. Twitter actually made this change on Android last year and it’s now bringing it over to iOS.

The links to articles and websites will now be opened in Safari’s viewer inside the Twitter apps so that users can easily use the accounts on websites that they are already signed into.

It has also refined typography to make it more consistent. Headlines are bolder so that it’s easier to focus on what’s happening. Rounded profile photos will make the overall look feel cleaner as well.

All tweets will now update instantly with reply, Retweet, and like counts so that users can see conversations as they take place live.

These changes will be rolled out across the aforementioned platforms in the coming days.

New Sphero Spider-Man Toy Is A ‘Storyteller’

Sphero has launched a new toy today as it continues its long-standing partnership with Disney that has brought us toys like the BB-8 and Lightning McQueen. However, the company’s latest toy is a bit different. It doesn’t more around like the droid or the racing car, the new Sphero Spider-Man toy has actually been described as a “storyteller.”

The Spider-Man toy from Sphero appears to have an infinite supply of jokes that it can tell on-demand. He can even chat with you on a variety of topics that include dating and school. No wonder Sphero co-founder and Chief Software Architect Adam Wilson calls it “a storyteller.”

The toy is a nice little tie-in with the new Spider-Man movie that has been getting a lot of traction recently. It’s a reboot of the popular franchise, one that’s anxiously awaited. That’s not all. There’s also a PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game which is going to be released next year.

Sphero’s Spider-Man features expressive LCD eyes, a speaker, a microphone, and an accelerometer. The infrared sensor enables the toy to enter “guard mode” to warn users if someone enters their room.

The toy can be controlled using the iOS and Android companion app though users will mostly interact with the toy using voice commands. Wilson does point out that the droid’s conversational engine has been built from the ground up and that it’s a “full Android device.”

It’s not going to be cheap. Sphero’s Spider-Man toy costs $149.99.

Marissa Mayer Looks Forward To Using Gmail Again

Marissa Mayer held the top job at Yahoo for five years. She switched from Google to lead the company after working at Mountain View over more than 13 years. It was a big switch for the executive who would have undoubtedly had to stop using some Google services as she was now in competition with her previous employer. Mayer resigned from Yahoo on Tuesday after Verizon completed its acquisition of Yahoo’s internet business. Mayer has reportedly said she looks forward to using Gmail again post-Yahoo.

Mayer was at a conference in London where she was asked about what she intended to do in her life after leading Yahoo for five years. She said that she was looking forward to using Gmail again, explaining that she’s faster at using productivity tools that she has designed herself.

Mayer worked at Google for more than 13 years in different roles. She was the lead on several services, including Gmail, and had a big impact on how Google’s email service was shaped during its formative years.

She has since clarified her comments on Twitter, saying that she will continue to use “the excellent Yahoo Mail too,” and that the team’s hard work has paid off with a product that’s “dramatically better.”

Mayer says her “out-of-context” comment was related to Gmail’s design and how it has evolved since her work on the service in the early days.
