After a gunman opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers during a practice game for the Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, Virginia, Rep. Ryan Costello (R-Pa.) tweeted about how he was supposed to be there.

The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was shot in the hip, and a staffer of Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) was also among those hit. Five people, including the suspect, were transported to a local hospital, police said.

Costello was supposed to be at the practice game, but had missed his ride by two minutes. He tweeted out a message to indicate he was “fine” and praying for his colleagues:

Costello’s serendipitous lateness prevented him from being present for the horrors Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) recalled to CNN. Paul indicated that “nobody would’ve survived” had Capitol Police not been there and that “it would’ve been a massacre without them.”

The Congressional Baseball Game is slated to happen Thursday. There has been no word as to whether the game will still be played in light of the shooting.

A clerk at a store near Yankee Stadium suffered a broken jaw and facial fractures when an angry customer threw avocados at him, CBS New York reported Tuesday.

The May 29 assault, caught on camera, shows the customer repeatedly hurling the avocados at the employee and a coworker. He then pelts him with bananas.

The clerk was hospitalized, the CBS affiliate noted.

Meanwhile, the suspect and an accomplice, who also threw avocados and trashed the place, remain at large, the New York City Police Department told HuffPost on Wednesday.

Police said the two suspects became irate during an argument over a food order, the New York Post reported.

The owner of Stadium Gourmet Deli, Hany Girgis, told CBS the recently hired worker did not speak English and one suspect got upset after the cashier offered to translate.

This Video Is A Beautiful Ode To Adventurous Women

A new video is paying homage to all the badass women who love adventure.

On June 12, clothing company Outdoors Research published a video on Facebook, titled “Where The Wild Things Play.” The video begins with three dudes sitting at a bar scrolling through Tinder, but not one of them can find an available woman near them to match with. Finally one guy asks: “Where are the ladies at?” and the screen cuts to women doing some truly mind-blowing outdoor sports.

The 4-minute video features a beautiful succession of women hiking, skiing, rock climbing, biking and more ― all set to the song “Long Skirt Short Jacket” by Cake.

Filmmaker Krystle Wright, who made the video, told HuffPost that she wanted to create a short that highlighted women being active outdoors because women simply aren’t represented enough in adventure films.

“For the past 5 years or so, there’s been the typical question that was thrown around at the adventure film festivals asking ‘Why aren’t there more females?’” Wright said. “It gets to a point where some action needs to be taken rather than continually talking about the subject… I just wanted to take a light-hearted approach whilst making a statement that there are plenty of ladies out there ripping it in the backcountry. Rather [than] ask where are they, let’s celebrate who is there so we can show others that it is possible.”

After the video was posted Monday, it quickly went viral. As of Wednesday morning, “Where The Wild Things Play” had over 6,500 likes and 10,000 shares.

Many commenters pointed out that the video lacked diversity, featuring almost exclusively white women. Wright told HuffPost she’s relatively new to filmmaking and she hopes to fix this error in her next project.

“As a filmmaker, I have to own up to the fact that I did not look at the bigger picture and how much more I could’ve achieved with this piece,” she said. “I love receiving criticism and feedback as next time around I can continue to evolve and grow from this and hopefully become a more mature filmmaker with more attention to planning beforehand.”

Check out a few stunning moments from the short film below:

Microsoft patches Windows XP to stop foreign hack attacks

Last month, Microsoft took what it called the “highly unusual” step of patching older Windows versions like XP against the WannaCrypt ransomware virus. It’s doing the same in June to protect against attacks that are potentially even more sinister. “T…

'Gran Turismo Sport' is a blast even if you're terrible at it

I’ve never been into Gran Turismo (or racing games in general), but when my colleague Timothy J. Seppala asked if I wanted to play the franchise’s next title, GT Sport, I didn’t think twice about saying yes. Especially after seeing how gorgeous the l…

Thrustmaster Gran Turismo Racing Wheel Puts You in the Cockpit for $800

Thrustmaster has a new racing wheel that is coming to land along with the new Gran Turismo Sport racing game for the PS4. The Thrustmaster T-GT racing wheel is one of the most expensive gaming peripherals you can get your sweaty palms. This spendy wheel will cost $799.99(USD) and promises the best driving experience this side of actually driving a race car.

The price gets you a fancy leather-wrapped, force-feedback racing wheel with three pedals so you can row your own gears if you want, and an external power supply that looks like a turbocharger. The feedback system is supposed to accurately replicate everything from the feel of tire grip and road surface, to the movement of the suspension system.

The fancy racing wheel even has an integrated cooling system, rotary selector knobs, a D-pad, and face buttons for navigating menus. Paddle shifters are behind the wheel.

The only thing missing here is the shift lever itself. Why sell a setup with a clutch pedal if you don’t include a gear shifter? I’m guessing Thrustmaster expects you’ll drop the dough on one of their add-on stick shifters for about $175, that’s why.

Massive Click-Fraud Operation Busted In Thailand

Thai police conducted a raid on Sunday which uncovered a massive click-fraud operation being operated by three Chinese citizens who were subsequently arrested after the raid. The click-fraud operation was being run through a wall of 500 smartphones which were mostly iPhones as well as an estimated number of 350,000 SIM cards. The men arrested have reportedly acknowledged that they were running this operation to fraudulently increase the number of clicks in ads on WeChat, which is the largest messaging app in China.

The police had responded to reports of illegal migrants and upon raiding the home, they discovered the click-fraud operation. The men later accepted their role in the operation.

Even though their operation has been busted, the men still have a lot of details to provide, particularly about how they were able to acquire so many SIM cards when countries like Thailand and China both require IDs when purchasing and registering SIM cards in bulk.

The Bangkok Post points out in its report that while Thailand doesn’t have specific laws pertaining to click-fraud, such a practice has long been outlawed in China, where it has long been an illicit business. The arrested Chinese nationals are likely to be deported to their home country by Thailand.

Qualcomm Chips Will Now Power Smart Speakers

It won’t be an understatement to say that the Amazon Echo has done great things for the smart speaker market. Companies like Google and Apple came out with their own smart speakers after they saw the runaway success that Amazon has had with its Echo devices. Qualcomm is now looking to provide the building blocks to OEMs that are interested in making such products but don’t want to start from scratch.

Qualcomm has introduced a reference “smart audio” design which features a speaker, microphone, and voice recognition technology that OEMs can use if they want to make their own smart speakers.

Qualcomm’s reference design also has support for both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant which will enable OEMs to integrate the voice assistants into their products.

The new platform is a flexible solution that offers two Qualcomm SoC options based on the APQ8009 and APQ8018 chips. Qualcomm’s AllPlay multi-room audio technology is supported as well which means these speakers will be easily configurable to play synchronized music across multiple rooms.

High-performance Wi-Fi and Bluetooth solutions will be supported as well by these devices, the flexible set of options include a variety of dual-band 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi chips with both 1×1 and 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, and Bluetooth Low Energy.

It’s going to be a while before consumer devices based on this platform are launched but at least we can now expect the smart speaker market to get a whole lot more crowded than it already is.
