WASHINGTON ― At 70 years of age, an Eagle Scout and Sunday school teacher, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III can seem mild-mannered and even a bit forlorn.

“I kind of go my own way in the Senate,” he told me last year as we stood waiting for our bags at a Reagan Airport carousel after returning home from a Donald Trump campaign event. “I don’t think there are many senators who want to associate with me.”

Sessions was lonely for a reason. Beneath the timid surface is a streak of impatience, resentment and anger. Old-school Alabama, he is a descendant of secessionists and segregationists and was known during his 20 years in the U.S. Senate as a skeptic of civil rights enforcement and a foe of immigration of most any kind.

Even in the modern Republican Party, Sessions often was too much, a cranky uncle in the Deep South basement of race-based politics.

Not surprisingly, he was, for a long time, the first and only U.S. senator to back Trump.

Sessions, who was rewarded with the job of attorney general for his early support, was the logical person to launch Team Trump’s new hard-line strategy of trying to discredit Russia investigations on Capitol Hill and at the Department of Justice.

To do so, the first order of business was to re-baptize Sessions as a member of Team Trump, and to restore some measure of credibility.

The president has privately derided Sessions as weak for recusing himself from overseeing the Russia probe; he had left himself open to accusations of perjury with his incomplete ― to say the least ― confirmation hearing testimony about his Russian contacts.

So this would be Sessions’ chance to publicly pledge allegiance, to “correct the record” and to show foes that he was in for the long haul.

In an afternoon of combative testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sessions ducked, dodged, stonewalled and gave innocent explanations for his own Russia contacts and actions as AG in overseeing the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Along the way, he questioned Comey’s judgment, defended his own and, while acknowledging that the Russians had interfered in the election, denied any knowledge of collusion with Trump.

More important than any single response was Sessions’ overall message: I may be recused on the Russia investigation per se, but I am loyal to the president and will do what I can to protect him.

While Sessions was doing his best to counterattack, Trump allies, from talk radio to Donald Trump Jr., were joining in, praising the AG, questioning Comey’s bona fides, and even suggesting that the president was considering firing the special counsel hired by the Justice Department to lead the investigation, lawyer and former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Democrats waved off the firing threat, but the truth is that if Trump was brazen enough to fire Comey in the first place, he could look for someone at the Justice Department to do the same thing to Mueller.

It has even been suggested that Trump could issue pardons to some of those under investigation, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Sessions refused to answer whether he and the president had discussed the Comey firing, or pardons.

Inside and outside the White House, word was that the hard-liners ― the “two Steves,” Bannon and Miller, and Kellyanne Conway among them ― had seized the initiative after Comey testified aggressively and Mueller began enlisting top-line experts in criminal law, forensic audits and other deep-dive specialties.

The Bannonites have argued to a receptive president that he is losing in two ways: He is getting hammered day after day on the Russia issue, and he has been unable to change the subject to his more upbeat messages on the economy, infrastructure and jobs.

The latest polls show the president near his all-time low in job approval ― the lowest of any modern new president. While he is holding onto most Republicans, he has cratered among the independents who gave him enough votes to win in 2016. (Few, if any, Democrats will admit to supporting him.)

To talk about what Trump wants to talk about, the Bannonites are saying, the White House has to scorch the earth of the Russia investigations

“The White House and its allies have concluded that they will NEVER get a break from the media and the rest of Washington on this,” said Diana Bannister, a well-connected conservative consultant. “Well, I could have told them that. But now they are saying, ‘why shouldn’t we fight back with everything we’ve got?’

“They are and they will.”

Hubble Space Telescope Reveals Glittering Galaxies Of New Stars

Using “natural magnifying lenses in space,” the acclaimed Hubble Space Telescope has photographed amazing close-up glimpses of what NASA refers to as “the universe’s brightest infrared galaxies.”

“The galaxy images, magnified through a phenomenon called gravitational lensing, reveal a tangled web of misshapen objects punctuated by exotic patterns, such as rings and arcs,” NASA says. “The unusual forms may have been produced by spectacular collisions between distant, massive galaxies in a sort of cosmic demolition derby.”

It’s not just the glitz, glamour and garish-looking spectacle of the galaxy clusters. These galaxies are producing more than 10,000 new stars a year. And their glow is so bright in the infrared range that they shine with the intensity of 10 trillion to 100 trillion suns.

“We have hit the jackpot of gravitational lenses,” galaxy researcher and astronomer James Lowenthal, of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, said in a NASA statement. “These ultra-luminous, massive starburst galaxies are very rare. Gravitational lensing magnifies them so that you can see small details that otherwise are unimaginable.”

Astronomers “want to understand what’s powering these monsters,” Lowenthal said, “and gravitational lensing allows us to study them in greater detail.”

As more and more planets are discovered in our home galaxy, the Milky Way, the sheer numbers are quite staggering.

The following video explores the question of how many galaxies there are.

Galaxies range in different sizes and shapes, and include billions or trillions of stars, or suns.

In April, Time magazine announced its “100 most influential people in the world” list, which included three planet hunters. One of those scientists, Natalie Batalha ― the first woman at NASA to make Time’s list ― made some truly eye-opening statements about the detection of new planets.

“These exoplanet discoveries are really changing how we see the universe,” Batalha said during an interview with her fellow planet hunters. “You know, we look up in the sky and instead of seeing stars, we see other solar systems, because now we know that every star in the sky has at least one planet.”

In 2015, Forbes magazine suggested that, after the 25th anniversary of the stunning achievements of the Hubble Space Telescope, “We may yet find closer to a trillion galaxies within our visible universe.”

That’s a lot of galaxies, with a lot of suns, and a lot of planets ― and dare we speculate, a lot of life?

PlayLink For PS4 Is A New Way From Sony To Play Games

Sony has introduced an exciting new way to play games with friends and family. It’s called PlayLink for PS4. Basically, what PlayLink does is that it combines your smartphone or tablet, TV, and PS4 console with a new collection of games that are designed to take advantage of the screen real estate offered by the smartphone or tablet and its camera capabilities.

The PlayLink games have been developed to be played in groups which will allow for a fun and dynamic gameplay experience with friends and family. The collection of games ranges from quick-fire quizzes to crime thrillers. To access PlayLink, players require a smartphone or tablet with the free companion app alongside a PS4 that’s hooked up to a TV.

The smartphone or tablet essentially transforms into a versatile controller for the PlayLink game. It can be used to perform a variety of tasks and gestures based on the game that’s being played.

One of the first PlayLink titles is called That’s You. It’s a comedy quick which challenges the player and five of their friends to answer questions that reveal how they really feel about each other. This particular game will be released for free to all PlayStation Plus subscribers come July 4th.

More PlayLink-compatible titles will be added to the lineup in the weeks to come but Sony is yet to confirm how much these titles are going to cost individually.

Get Free Unlimited Sprint Service If You Switch Carriers

It’s not common for carriers to run promotions aimed at stealing subscribers from their rivals and if anything, Sprint’s latest promotion is doing that a bit too blatantly. Sprint has just announced that it’s going to give a free year of unlimited service on its network to customers who switch from one of its rivals.

Sprint is now offering unlimited data, talk, and text to customers who switch to its network with an eligible handset. All existing postpaid subscribers at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are eligible to take advantage of this latest promotion.

Family plans are also covered so those who are thinking about switching can bring their entire family along for the ride to Sprint. New subscribers will have to pay a $30 activation fee but even that will be refunded within two billing cycles.

All new Sprint customers can take advantage of this promotion if they sign up before June 30th and port a number from one of the carrier’s major rivals. The free year of service that they receive will be valid until July 30th, 2018.

The carrier does point out that customers will have to pay for the SIM card aside from having to pay taxes and fees monthly. They will also have to pay other monthly charges if they decide to turn off AutoPay or eBilling.

More details about this promotion are available on Sprint’s website. It’s always best to go through the fine print first before deciding to take advantage of an offer like this.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Spotted On Geekbench

Whenever Samsung launches their flagship Galaxy S series of phones, they usually follow up by launching variants of the handset at a later date. In the case of the Galaxy S8, we have heard rumors and seen some “evidence” that the Galaxy S8 Active will be the next variant of the series.

Now thanks to a recent sighting on Geekbench, possible specs of the upcoming handset have been revealed. The device in question that was spotted on Geekbench possesses the model number SM-G892A, and it appears to be powered by Qualcomm processors clocked at 1.9GHz. We’re not sure if there will be an Exynos variant, but the version spotted seems to be running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. It also appears to be running on Android 7.0 Nougat

Unfortunately other than that we’re not sure what else to expect from the phone, although for the most part it should be packing the same hardware as the Galaxy S8, with the main difference being that it will be a more rugged handset, which in turn has fueled rumors that it will be losing its curved screen and will see the use of a more traditional flat screen instead.

We have also heard the rumors that the handset will be arriving for AT&T, although when exactly that is remains to be seen.

Apple’s CEO Reveals They Are Working On Self-Driving Car Technology

For the longest time, Apple’s plans and interest in the automotive space have been something of an open secret. However the company has never really spoken much about it or addressed the rumors that they might be working on a car of their own, at least until now where in a report from Bloomberg, it quotes Apple’s CEO Tim Cook as confirming the company’s plans.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Cook was quoted as saying, “We’re focusing on autonomous systems, It’s a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It’s probably one of the most difficult A.I. projects actually to work on.” Basically it sounds like Apple is working on the technology behind self-driving vehicles, rather than making a car of their own which was what the initial rumors had suggested.

This is pretty much in line with what we have heard, where Apple had apparently scrapped their plans for a self-driving car and decided to focus on the technology behind the car instead. However exactly what Apple plans to do with the technology is really anyone’s guess, and when asked if this could lead to Apple making their own car, Cook said, “We’ll see where it takes us. We’re not really saying from a product point of view what we will do.”

In the meantime Apple’s self-driving cars have recently been spotted on the roads where they have been given approval to test them out in public.

Alleged OnePlus 5 Cases ‘Confirms’ Lack Of Headphone Jack

It would seem that these days, handset OEMs are headed towards the direction in which there will be a future where smartphones will no longer come with headphone jacks. Sure, many are still quite hesitant in making the change, but more than a few have already done so, and OnePlus could be one of them.

In a series of photos of cases for the OnePlus 5 obtained by Android Pure, it would seem to further corroborate the rumors and speculation that the handset might not feature a headphone jack. This is simply based on the fact that in these renderings and images, there does not appear to be a cutout for where a headphone jack should go.

For those hoping this isn’t true, you might recall that OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had also recently tweeted some cryptic news that gave further rise to the speculation that the OnePlus 5 won’t have a headphone jack, so if anything these renders appear to be proving that Pei’s tweets could be true.

In any case it remains to be seen if these renders are any accurate so take it with a grain of salt. However OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 5 on the 20th of June as per the invite, so do check back with us next week for the details.

Gran Turismo Sport Will Be Released In The Fall Of 2017

With Microsoft having Forza as its Xbox racing game, Sony’s answer to that would be in the form of the Gran Turismo franchise. Now the latest title in the franchise would be Gran Turismo Sport which was announced last year, and was also slated for a release in November 2016. Clearly that did not happen.

However for those who are still eagerly anticipating the game, you might be interested to learn that we now have a rough timeframe to look forward to as Polyphony Digital has announced that the game will be launched in the fall of 2017. The game will be supported by the PS4 Pro which means that gamers who own the device will be able to look forward to 4K gaming at a buttery smooth 60fps.

We’re not sure what was the reason behind the delay of the game, but we guess it was to iron out whatever kinks there were which is pretty standard and normal these days. After all it’s better to delay the game rather than launch it with issues, especially since first impressions are what counts.

In any case there is no specific release date set except to say the fall of 2017, so check back with us in the coming months where hopefully we’ll have something more specific to share with you guys. In the meantime you can check out the new trailer for the game above.
