Some OnePlus 5 Owners Reporting Jelly Scrolling Effect

Due to the fact that when a product is undergoing tested on an extremely limited release, such as with a handful of employees, it is safe to say that there will be issues that they will not be able to detect until it has made its way into the hands of the masses, where a product will go through all kinds of situations.

The OnePlus 5 is currently experiencing such a problem because according to various reports, there are some owners of the handset who claim that they are experiencing a jelly scrolling effect on the phone, which can be best described as a flickering effect. A video uploaded onto YouTube by Damir Franc (see above, the flickering starts around the 8 min 15 second mark) shows the issue in action.

As to what might be the problem, OnePlus has yet to confirm what the issue might be, but XDA did confirm that they have reached out to the company who told them that they are looking into it. In the meantime it has been speculated that it could be a frame rate issue as it has been noted that VSYNC on the device was disabled. Another theory put forth is that maybe for some units, the display has been mounted upside down.

In any case it remains to be seen whether this is a software issue that can be addressed with a simple update, or if it might be a hardware problem that will require a return. In the meantime for those experiencing the problem, we guess you can keep your phone around and hope a software update fixes it, or you can always try taking it back to the shop.

WhatsApp Gets Searchable Emoji Feature

With messenger apps like LINE or even iOS Messages, whenever you type a word/phrase that might have a corresponding emoji, you will be prompted as and given the option of using it. However with WhatsApp, you would still have to search for and insert emojis the good old fashioned way – manually.

It’s not really a big deal and for anyone who has used emojis long enough are probably familiar with what’s available, but for those who aren’t totally familiar, not to worry as WhatsApp appears to be bringing searchable emojis to the app. However we should point out that this appears to be a feature that is limited to the WhatsApp beta for now.

This means that if you don’t have the beta installed then you won’t be seeing it just yet, but basically as you can see in the screenshots above, users will soon be able to search for emojis by typing a keyword, like “hand”, “phone”, “laugh”, “love”, and so on. We’re not sure when this particular feature will be released in the main version of WhatsApp, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

In the meantime for those who are interested, you can download the WhatsApp beta’s APK and sideload it onto your Android device, although given that it is beta don’t expect it to work 100% properly.

2017 Petya malware actually irreversibly wipes data

It smelled like a ransomware and talked like a ransomware but, in fact, it was worse than a ransomware. According to cybersecurity outfit Comae Technologies, the so-called Petya.2017 is actually a wiper masquerading as a ransomware, doing irrecoverable damage to data … Continue reading

The Aumi Mini Is A Smart Night Light With Notifications

If you’re someone who uses a night light in their bedroom, maybe because you don’t want to stub your toe at the foot of bed when going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, perhaps you might want to consider making an upgrade to the Aumi Mini night light which is a night light that comes with smarts.

Launched on Kickstarter, the Aumi Mini is basically a smaller and perhaps slightly improved version of the original Aumi that launched previously. It comes with a USB plug which means that it can fit into just about any outlet that has USB, or even your computer. It comes with LED lights ringed around it that can change color depending on the notifications.

There are various types of notifications that the Aumi Mini can alert you to. For example there could be weather alerts to let you know that it’s raining, it can notify you of emails, notify you whenever a smart lock is opened, or when you’re tagged on social media, or a a reminder to wake up, or it can even flash red when it detects that the WiFi has gone down.

In fact the possibilities are near-endless as the Aumi Mini will play nicely with the IFTTT app, meaning that you can craft all kinds of custom recipes or search for existing ones depending on your need. If this sounds like something you wouldn’t mind installing in your home, then head on over to its Kickstarter page and pledge your support.

Google Experimenting With New Ad Formats For Virtual Reality

For the most part, a lot of Google’s services and products are free to use which probably explains how they’ve managed to amass so many customers over the years. Granted there are some paid Google services, but unless you’re an enterprise user or a power user, most of the time you can get away with using Google’s free options.

Of course the saying “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” rings pretty true as Google makes money through ads, and it seems that if you’re hoping that maybe virtual reality (VR) will be ad-free, sorry to say but that doesn’t look like it as Google has announced at the company is experimenting with new ad formats designed for VR over at their Area 120 incubator.

One of the examples they’ve come up with comes in the form of a cube that sits at the bottom of an app, and clicking on it or gazing on it for a few seconds will cause it to spring up and expand. “Developers and users have told us they want to avoid disruptive, hard-to-implement ad experiences in VR. So our first idea for a potential format presents a cube to users, with the option to engage with it and then see a video ad. By tapping on the cube or gazing at it for a few seconds, the cube opens a video player where the user can watch, and then easily close, the video.”

This is presumably just one of the ideas Google is experimenting with now, and to be fair we guess it isn’t a bad one as it isn’t particularly disruptive, and users have the choice of interacting with it. Whether or not this is something that gets implemented remains to be seen, but what do you guys think?

Twitch Is Rolling Out A New Mobile App

Watching Twitch on your computer or streaming to Twitch from your computer is relatively easy. However unfortunately trying to do so from mobile isn’t exactly the best experience, but that’s something that Twitch is changing as they have announced that they are rolling out a new mobile app over the course of the next 2 weeks.

The new mobile app will feature a spanking brand new design that looks cleaner and easier to use, and one of the biggest changes they’ve made is how users can live stream from their phones. According to Twitch, “With mobile streaming, going live is as simple as pressing a button. Stream to your channel directly from your phone’s camera to the Twitch App – no need to switch between other apps.”

This should help the app better compete against the likes of other live streaming platforms such as Facebook Live, Instagram Live, Periscope, and so on, all of which have clearly been designed for mobile in mind. In addition, the new Twitch mobile app is broken into 3 different sections, with Live, Pulse, and Browse.

The Live section basically shows users live streams from people they follow. Pulse is more of a recommendation area where you will be able to discover live streams and clips that have been tailored for you based on your preferences, and Browse basically lets users browse everything Twitch has to offer. Like we said, the new app will be rolled out in the next couple of weeks so do keep an eye out for it.

Adidas ‘All Day’ Fitness App Is Now Available For Download

While Adidas might be primarily seen as a company that makes casual and sports shoes, the company’s interest in technology has been pretty obvious. For example back in the day with the iPod, companies such as Adidas and Nike launched sensors that could be embedded in compatible shoes to help measure things like the wearer’s stride.

This is why it did not come as a surprise to learn that Adidas was also getting into fitness training when they announced the “All Day” fitness app back in March earlier this year. For those wondering about the app, you’ll be interested to learn that the All Day fitness app is finally available for download for both iOS and Android devices right now.

In case you’re hearing about this for the first time, the All Day fitness app will basically serve up various fitness routines for users depending on their preferences. There will also be cooking recipes for those who want to start eating more healthy, and there will also be sections that focus on the mind and relaxation of the user.

Unfortunately for now the Adidas All Day app is only available to those living in the US, so if you are living in the US then head on over to the iTunes App Store or Google Play to get your hands on it.
