When it comes to having the best smartphone available, most of the time we would aim straight for nothing but the top of the line models — and this would definitely include checking out which particular flagship model catches our fancy. Huawei has certainly become a pretty strong player by themselves over the years, and it is with much aplomb that they recently announced their latest flagship, the Huawei Honor 9.
The Huawei Honor 9 is the 2017 flagship model from the company that comes with the slogan “The Light Catcher,” which would mean it has camera specifications that you would most probably drool over. On paper, the Huawei Honor 9 is a trend setter where dual lens cameras are concerned, delivering 20MP and 12MP lenses with the former being a monochrome lens while the latter is a RGB color lens. The RGB lens is able to faithfully capture the colors of the world in vivid detail, while the monochrome lens delivers additional contrast and detailed information at a level that the similar pixel size’s RGB lens is unable to provide. This makes the Honor 9 one of the more unique propositions when it comes to low light photography, with the monochrome lens being able to function as a solitary lens to capture true monochrome images.
At the back of the Honor 9 would be a gorgeous 3D glass segment and a metal bezel, delivering a subtle metal aurora that is certainly a unique trait in smartphone design. When it comes to performance, the Huawei Honor 9 does not disappoint, sporting a Kirin 960 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and EMUI 5.1.
Not only that, Huawei has thrown in the Huawei Histen sound effect, where they worked with Grammy award-winning recording producer Rainer Maillard to optimize sound quality, while partnering with Monster to create “Honor Purity,” which is a unique sound equalizer that can only be found on the Honor 9 and nowhere else. This ultra-wide 3D sound field technology will allow three customizable sound modes to be accessed for different user scenarios.
Expect the Honor 9 to be available for purchase in select markets already such as Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UAE and UK.

Growing up, it would get really boring about 1.75 days into summer break, and I would be looking for anything to do. Since we lived in a rural area with literally nothing to do, that meant lots of daytime TV. That also meant lots of reruns of old shows from the ’60s and ’70s. One that I watched but didn’t really like because it was too creepy for me was The Munsters.
Eddie Munster bothered me the most for some reason. I figured he would smile at you and let you play with is wolfman doll right up until he murdered you and drank all your blood. If you’re not too creeped out by this thought, Tweeterhead’s Eddie Munster statue could be a nice addition to your toy collection.
The 6.5″ tall statue comes with the pale green-faced Eddie, along with his wolfman doll and an old black and white TV for him to watch. The figure is on sale at Entertainment Earth right now for $179(USD).
He still looks like he is trying to decide if he wants to eat your left or right eye first.
Whenever Apple launches a new product, it’s almost guaranteed that there will be people who mock them for it, whether it be for the design, price, features, specs, and so on. The AirPods was such a product that was made fun of when it was first announced, especially given its price and design.
However fast forward to today, the AirPods appears to be selling well, so much so that in some markets it has become rather difficult to get yourself a pair. In fact analyst Gene Munster seems to believe (via The Loop) that in time, the AirPods could become a bigger hit compared to the Apple Watch that was launched to a lot of anticipation and hype, only to fall short.
By no means is the Apple Watch a failure, but it definitely did not deliver on the hype, which is actually the opposite of the AirPods which went on to be rather successful despite many being rather skeptical of it. According to Munster, “Over the next 10 years, we anticipate that AirPods will be bigger than the Apple Watch as the product evolves from simple wireless headphones to a wearable, augmented audio device. While both AirPods and Apple Watch should continue to grow, we see AirPods contributing about the same amount of revenue as Apple Watch by FY22.”
As Dave Mark at The Loop writes, the keyword here is “augmented”. There is no doubt that Apple believes that Siri will play a huge part in their future (hence the launch of the HomePod), and as Siri’s capabilities grow, so too will the need to interact with it in more ways than an iOS device, and the AirPods will be one of those mediums. Whether or not Munster’s predictions will come true remains to be seen, but what say you?

While many see Xiaomi as a company that makes phones, over in China Xiaomi is a company that dabbles in more than just mobile devices. For example the company has launched devices like an electric screwdriver and an air purifier, which is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that the company’s latest product is an Android-powered short throw laser projector.
The projector announced by the company will allow users to place it in front of a surface at a distance between 5cm to 50cm from the wall. From there it will be capable of projecting an image that will go up to 150-inches, but given that the resolution of the projector is at Full HD 1080p, going so huge might not be such a good idea when it comes to image quality.
It will be powered by Texas Instruments DLP tech which promises movie theater-grade 5,000 lumens of brightness, and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and better than 85% NTSC color coverage. It has also been estimated to be good for 25,000 hours, so depending on how often you use it, how long it will vary.
Like we said, it is also powered by Android with the MIUI TV interface overlaid on it. It also comes with built-in speakers, and also has WiFi and Ethernet. Unfortunately for now it appears to be a China-only launch where it is priced at CNY 10,000 which is roughly $1,500.

Will the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 feature dual cameras? According to recent leaks, it would suggest that is the case. However prior to this Samsung has yet to launch a handset with such features, and many had expected the Galaxy S8 to be the first, although clearly that did not happen.
However could Samsung be inching closer to making a dual camera smartphone a reality? It is possible, especially since the company has recently taken the wraps off a new Isocell camera at MWC Shanghai that features a dual camera setup. The camera shown off at the event features dual sensors of the 13MP variety and with an aperture of f/2.0.
According to Samsung, this particular camera system will allow the phone to snap superior image quality under low-light conditions, but whether or not those are just marketing words remains to be seen, although to Samsung’s credit the cameras on their smartphones have proven over the years to be pretty good.
We should point out that this unveiling is by no means a guarantee that the upcoming Note 8 will feature dual cameras, but it is pretty clear that the company is at the very least interested in the technology. Whether or not it will find its way to the Note 8 remains to be seen, so maybe temper your expectations for now.

Since human nature is sometimes unpredictable, there are certain situations in which we can only react to as opposed to acting early and preventing them from happening. However it has not stopped researchers from trying to predict events before they happen, like creating algorithms to detect when/where terrorists might attack.
However it seems that a lot of the data could already be in front of us that has yet to be fully tapped into. In a recent study conducted by Cardiff University (via CNET), it seems that Twitter might actually hold the key to predicting events such as riot, and apparently it does a better job of detecting when a riot might happen even before police do.
According to co-author of the study Pete Burnap, “In this research, we show that online social media are becoming the go-to place to report observations of everyday occurrences — including social disorder and terrestrial criminal activity.” One of the examples in the study found that with a computerized system in place, it managed to determine an incident in the town of Enfield an hour and 23 minutes earlier than police.
However instead of law enforcement having to worry about their jobs being replaced, Burnap states that social media will never replace traditional resources. Instead it sounds more like police should start turning to these new channels of information that could help keep them ahead of situations before they escalate.

Just like how a knife can be used to attack or defend oneself, the same can be said when it comes to the usefulness of drones, where depending on who is using it and what they’re using it for, it can be a good or bad thing. For example someone flying a drone into a fire and hindering the efforts of firefighters is clearly a bad thing.
However firefighters using drones to fight fires is probably a good thing, which is kind of what firefighters in South Africa are doing. Earlier this year, the Western Cape of South Africa was hit with some pretty bad wildfires, and while it was bad and lives were lost, it is possible that things could have been worse had the firefighters not used drones.
The firefighters had requested drones by Airborne Drones which were equipped with heat mapping capabilities, plus given that they could withstand extreme temperatures and fly high above the flames, it allowed firefighters to survey the area, identify hot spots that could potentially flare up, and also identify people or animals that might be trapped.
In the future the use of drones could also help firefighters reduce the number of casualties amongst themselves too, since having a bird’s eye view will allow for better decision making, as well as allowing them to work proactively instead of reactively.
