Qualcomm Unveils New And Advanced Fingerprint Scanning Technology

While fingerprint security on mobile devices isn’t exactly new, it’s safe to say that it is thanks to the iPhone 5s that made the feature more mainstream and ubiquitous in today’s mobile devices. Fast forward to today and we’re starting to hear about how some smartphone makers are trying to take it to the next level by embedding these sensors underneath displays.

If you’re looking forward to such devices, Qualcomm might have something for you come summer 2018. Announced during MWC Shanghai, Qualcomm has unveiled new fingerprint scanning technology which is basically a newer and more advanced version of their previous solution which was known as Sense ID.

Dubbed the Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors, these new sensors from Qualcomm will be capable of scanning through display, glass, and metal, meaning that smartphone OEMs looking for an embedded solution can turn to Qualcomm for an answer. Unlike more traditional capacitive scanners, Qualcomm’s scanners will rely on ultrasonics which is how it is capable of scanning through your smartphone’s display.

On top of that, these sensors will also be capable of measuring your heartbeat and blood flow. Like we said, OEMs have been trying to get something similar to this up and running. We’ve heard rumors that Samsung has been struggling to get the technology to work on their devices, and we’ve also heard how Apple is said to incorporate something similar in the iPhone 8 as well.

Microsoft Will Use AI To Help Defend Against Malware

Malware and cyber attacks have been something that we have been dealing with for decades, and it seems that the more sophisticated our technology gets, the more sophisticated the attacks get as well. However chasing after the latest malware does feel like a never-ending task, which is why Microsoft is turning to the use of AI.

In a post on Microsoft’s blog (via Engadget), the company has revealed that with the upcoming Windows Fall Creators Update, they will be introducing AI to their Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) system, which should in theory be better and more efficient at protecting users from attacks.

For example one of the features of the AI is that it can pick up on malware that is unknown on a computer, and then it will be able to quarantine the malware in the cloud, create a signature for its identity, and from there the AI will be on the lookout on other Windows-based PCs for similar malware. Like we said, instead of having to constantly issue updates to antivirus software with updated lists, the AI will always ensure that protection is always up to date, which hopefully will reduce the number of computers that are infected.

That being said, since ATP is currently a feature only available for enterprise users, only enterprise users will be receiving this feature first. However a report from CNET has revealed that Microsoft has plans to eventually bring it to regular users as well, and also to expand it beyond just the Windows platform.

Assassin’s Creed Rebellion Announced For iOS And Android

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Origins is currently set for a release later this year on the 27th of October, but if you can’t wait then you might be interested to learn that Ubisoft has since announced a mobile version of Assassin’s Creed in the form of Assassin’s Creed Rebellion that will be released for iOS and Android.

According to Ubisoft, “Giving players the chance to build their own Assassin Brotherhood, manage a fortress, and engage in covert missions against the Templars, Assassin’s Creed Rebellion brings together a roster of more than 40 Assassins. Recruit familiar Assassins such as Ezio, Aguilar, Shao Jun, Claudia, and Machiavelli, along with more than 20 new unlockable characters exclusively created for Assassin’s Creed Rebellion.”

From Ubisoft’s description, it doesn’t sound like your typical Assassin’s Creed game. Instead the description of the gameplay sounds like what you might expect from farming simulators, except with assassins. It’s not a bad idea and should prove to be a rather interesting take on the franchise, not to mention the characters do look pretty cute in the drawings.

Unfortunately the game is still currently in development according to Ubisoft. It is also recommended for iOS devices running on iOS 8 or later, and Android devices running on Android 4.1 or later with at least 2GB of RAM.

Nintendo Has Sold Over 1 Million Switch Units In Japan

By now we guess it is safe to say that Nintendo’s attempt at a new console with the Nintendo Switch has proven to be somewhat of a success, or at least compared to the Wii U. In fact over in Japan the console has proved to be a pretty huge hit because according to the numbers provided by Famitsu (via Eurogamer), Nintendo has sold over 1 million units so far.

In a post on NeoGAF, this has been broken down further and we have a comparison of how other consoles are doing. For example speaking in terms of modern consoles, Sony’s PS4 took 49 weeks to hit 1 million in Japan, versus the Switch which took 17 weeks. Other Nintendo consoles like the DS took 4 weeks, the 3DS 13 weeks, the GameCube 17 weeks, the N65 29 weeks, and the Wii U 34 weeks, while the original Wii only took 6 weeks.

It has also been revealed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the most popular game for the Switch with 501,614 copies sold in Japan, followed by 460,480 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other popular titles include 1-2 Switch which sold 200,807 units, ARMS which managed 154,845 units which is impressive given that it was only released a couple of weeks ago, and Bomberman R which has sold 992,112 units.

If you notice Microsoft’s consoles are not listed because if you recall, Microsoft’s attempt at launching the Xbox One in Japan has not proven to be so successful. We’re not sure what the figures are now, but at one point in time, Microsoft only managed to sell 100 units in a week. Presumably that has changed by now and maybe Microsoft will do better with the Xbox One X.

Original Doom 2 Floppy Disks Are Up For Auction

Alongside with Wolfenstein and Quake, Doom was one of the early FPS titles available on the PC that helped popularize the FPS genre. If you’re someone who wouldn’t mind owning a piece of that franchise and its history, you might be interested to learn that Doom’s designer John Romero has put up the original Doom 2 floppy disks up for auction.

Note that these are floppy disks which means that you’ll be extremely hardpressed to find a computer these days that can run it, but then again chances are if you were to bid on it, you would probably want to keep it instead of playing it (there are probably some Doom 2 emulators online anyway).

According to Romero, “These are the originally shipped DOOM 2 floppies (3.5″) for PC and compatibles. The version is 1.7 (the first DOOM 2 version). NO BOX included – these are only the 3.5″ disks. I will sign these disks if you like.” The auction is set to end in the next 2 hours or so and at this time of posting, the bid for these disks is standing at $3,100.

We expect that if these were the original Doom floppy disks that they would fetch a much higher price, but Doom 2 is just as much a classic. If you’d like to get your hands on them, head on over to eBay and try your luck on bidding on them.
