Samsung Galaxy Note 7 ‘Fandom Edition’ Could Be Released July 7

So it has been confirmed that Samsung will be re-releasing the Galaxy Note 7 handset sans the exploding batteries, and a report from The Wall Street Journal has apparently confirmed what it will be called and when it will be released, which assuming they are correct is currently set for a release on the 7th of July.

The handset will still be known as the Galaxy Note 7, but it will have an extra “FE” tagged on the end of it. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the name, but apparently what the “FE” stands for is “Fandom Edition”, which we’re assuming is Samsung’s way of saying that maybe only a true fan would get this phone, versus newer models like the Galaxy S8, or waiting for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 which is rumored for a launch on the 28th of August.

Samsung isn’t expected to mass produce these Galaxy Note 7 FE handsets. In fact for the most part it is said that these Note 7 handsets are basically refurbished models of existing handsets with the battery problem fixed. The report claims that Samsung will only be making upwards of 400,000 units of these handsets and that it will most likely be skipping the US market.

It sounds like Samsung could be trying to recoup whatever losses they endured when they were forced to recall the phones in its entirety. Whether or not customers would actually choose to buy the phone versus a newer model, especially when the rumors are saying the phone could cost between $650-$700, remains to be seen.

Google Testing Chrome OS Night Light Feature

Back in May, it was reported that Google could be working on bringing a night mode feature to its Chrome OS platform. It looks like those reports were true because in a post on Google+ by François Beaufort, it has been confirmed that Google is currently testing out the feature which is called Night Light.

According to Beaufort, “Chrome OS Night Light new feature aims to ensure reduced strain on the eyes and improved sleep by allowing you to limit the amount of blue light your display uses.” This is similar to what other companies have introduced to their operating systems in the past, such as Apple with the Night Shift mode that lets users reduce the amount of blue light emitted from their iOS device’s display.

From what we can tell, users will be able to turn the feature on and off and set a schedule so that it will automatically shift in and out of Night Light mode depending on the time. Users can also further adjust the color temperature that they prefer. However this feature is currently undergoing testing as part of the Canary build, which means that it won’t be available to users running the main release of Chrome OS.

That being said it is a useful feature and we expect that Google should eventually push it out to the main build of Chrome OS in a future update, so do keep an eye out for it if this sounds like a feature you might be interested in.

Pandora To End Operations In Australia And New Zealand

With juggernauts like Apple launching their own music streaming service and with massive resources at their disposal, it isn’t surprising that the competition is feeling the pressure. This is despite the fact that Apple Music is still a relatively young service, but based on the figures it looks like Apple is playing catch up and fast.

In fact it seems that over in Australia and New Zealand, it looks like one of Apple Music’s rivals will be closing shop. In a confirmation to Billboard, it seems that Pandora will be shutting down their operations in the region. What this means is that the US will be the only market in which Pandora will be operating in, whereas before that Australia and New Zealand were the only international countries that Pandora was available in outside of the US.

There was no specific reason given behind the shut down, but according to a statement provided by a rep,  “While our experience in these markets reinforces the broader global opportunity long-term, in the short-term we must remain laser-focused on the expansion of our core business in the United States.”

It has been estimated that Pandora has about 5 million users in the Australia and New Zealand market. As The Verge notes, Pandora wouldn’t be the first to close its operations in the region. Prior to this other streaming services such as Guvera and Deezer had also opted to exit the Australian market.
