The Xbox One X that was unveiled at E3 2017 earlier this month is Microsoft’s latest Xbox One console. Unlike the Xbox One S which can play games at 4K (it upscales from 1080p), the Xbox One X is supposed to deliver “true” 4K gaming. So this begs the question of game file sizes and how the console manages them.
The good news is that Microsoft has taken this into consideration and according to a report from Stevivor, they have included a feature in the console that will make it “smarter” when it comes to downloading 4K assets. “In addition to 4K specific assets, developers have options when it comes to language specific assets as well, which depending on the title, can drastically reduce the install footprint.”
This won’t be an Xbox One X exclusive as Microsoft confirmed that it will also be available on all Xbox One devices. In a way this is similar to what companies like Apple are doing for mobile apps, where apps will only install the required files specific to a device, versus installing everything, like why would an iPhone 7 Plus need files related to the iPhone 5?
A Microsoft rep confirmed to the publication in a statement which reads, “With the launch of Xbox One X, when it comes to game content our intention is to download the correct assets to the correct console. This means, regardless of the TV you are playing on, 4K assets will be downloaded to Xbox One X (if available) and the standard 1080p assets will be downloaded to an Xbox One S.”
The Xbox One X is currently set for a release on the 7th of November later this year.
