Generally speaking, earnings calls are a pretty boring affair, and Alphabet’s own Q2 earnings call yesterday was no different. However, there were a few good morsels of information to be found by sitting through the call, one of them concerning Google’s VR efforts with Daydream. During the call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai gave us an estimate of where Daydream should … Continue reading

It hasn’t been a long time since HTC released its new flagship smartphone, the HTC U11. When this handset was first launched, the only variant that the company was offering featured 64GB of storage. That’s no longer the case. HTC has now started selling another varaint of the HTC U11 which features 128GB of onboard storage.
The HTC U11 features a 5.5 inch Quad HD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor under the hood coupled with 4GB of RAM. It also has IP67 certification and Gorilla Glass 5 for enhanced durability.
HTC’s new flagship has a 12 megapixel UltraPixel 3 rear camera with f/1.7 aperture and 4K video recording support. It also features a 16 megapixel front camera with full HD video capture and voice selfie functionality.
It’s a unique handset courtesy of a new feature that HTC is calling Edge Sense. The device actually has a touch sensitive frame so users can gently squeeze the phone to interact with it. They can use this method of interaction to launch apps, send text messages, and more. Users can customize the gesture so that it completely does their bidding.

Nothing captures the tech crowd’s interest these days than a good old fashioned beef between the giants of the tech industry, who often tend to be billionaires as well. Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk has long raised alarm over the dangers of artificial intelligence. He’s known for believing that AI might be a threat to the human race. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t hold the same views and this seems to have led to an indirect exchange of words between the two tech billionaires.
Musk most recently said that the artificial intelligence technology represents a “fundamental risk to the existence of civilization.” He pointed out that while he keeps raising the alarm, people won’t really understand until they see robots “going down the street killing people,” and that they won’t know how to react them because it would seem so ethereal.
Zuckerberg was asked about his views on the matter last Sunday during a Facebook Live Q&A session. A viewer asked Zuckerberg that “I watched a recent interview with Elon Musk and his largest fear for the future was AI. What are your thoughts on AI and how it could affect the world?”
The Facebook CEO replied that he has pretty strong opinions about this, adding that it’s possible to build things around AI and that AI itself will get better in the years to come. I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios are — I just, I don’t understand it. It’s really negative and in some ways I think it is pretty irresponsible,” he added.
Zuckerberg also predicted that over the next decade, AI is going to enable many improvements in the quality of our lives. He rounded up his answer by saying that he finds it questionable that some people are arguing for slowing down the process of building AI. ““If you’re arguing against AI you’re arguing against safer cars that aren’t going to have accidents,” he opined.
A write-up of Zuck’s remarks was then shared on Twitter and Musk was duly tagged. He pointed out that he has talked to Zuckerberg about this and that “his understanding of the subject is limited.”
This begs the question, who would you side with?
I’ve talked to Mark about this. His understanding of the subject is limited.

Imagine you’re heading home after a long night out on the town. You call a Lyft because you’re in no shape to drive, obviously. Suddenly, you feel hungry. Lyft knows that you might feel hungry at that point in time which is why it has announced a new tie-up today with popular fast food chain Taco Bell. It’s now allowing riders to add a Taco Bell stop during their ride with just one simple tap inside the Lyft app.
Lyft and Taco Bell have introduced a new Taco Mode today which will be available in the former’s app. The mode will allow riders to add a side trip to Taco Bell during their ride with just one tap.
Taco Bell explains that this partnership makes sense because most Lyft riders often ask for a pitstop to Taco Bell, particularly late night riders. It’s a missed opportunity for the chain when those riders want to ask if they can stop at Taco Bell on the way but don’t because they’re not sure if that’s allowed.
Since the idea is to provide customers with the “ultimate Taco Bell experience,” there’s going to be a special in-car menu and riders will be treated to custom swag as well. There will be free food giveaways too.
Lyft will be offering the Taco Mode as part of a pilot program between July 27th and July 29th in Orange County.
It will offer the same mode again between August 3rd and August 5th. Taco Mode will only be available between 9 pm and 2 am local time. Lyft is planning to expand Taco Mode to additional markets by the end of this year and is aiming for a nationwide rollout by next year.

Verizon is rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on its network which brings the much-awaited Daydream VR support for these handsets. Daydream is Google’s nascent virtual reality platform. The company has released several apps and even a headset, however, the platform’s reach has been limited given that only a handful of devices have support for it at this point in time.
Google has promised to bring support for the Daydream platform to more devices in the coming months. A server-side change will likely be required before the Galaxy S8 is fully compatible with Daydream.
Verizon has rolled out firmware update version G950USQU1AQG4 and G955USQU1AQG4 for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ respectively. The firmware release brings support for Google’s Daydream VR platform as well as the headset.
The update will also enable users to send animated GIFs during phone calls, however, they will only be able to do this if they have the “Profile Sharing” setting from the Contacts tab enabled.
The July security update is included in this release as well so it brings all of the crucial fixes for the vulnerabilities that were patched in the most recent security release from Google.
Verizon is rolling out this update over-the-air for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. It’s obviously going to take some time before this update becomes available for all users across the country.

The much-rumored Moto Z2 Force Edition has officially been announced today. Motorola announced the Moto Z2 Play last month with a collection of new Moto Mods. The company has now launched this new handset which it claims to be its most advanced smartphone ever. Motorola says that the Z2 Force Edition’s screen is guaranteed not to crack or shatter.
The handset has a slim metal body with a 5.5 inch quad HD display that’s protected by the Moto ShatterShield technology. The design is reinforced with 7,000 series aluminum so it appears to be a very durable package.
As is the case with recent Android flagships, the Moto Z2 Force Edition has a dual camera. The dual 12 megapixel cameras on the back, one monochrome and one color, will enable users to capture professional looking photos. They can even add blur effects to the background or foreground of images.
The Moto Z2 Force Edition is a modular smartphone so it will be compatible with Moto Mods as well. The company has launched it alongside a new camera mod.
The handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. As expected, it has a 2,730mAh battery which is a big decline compared to last year’s Force which had a 3,500mAh battery.
Nevertheless, Motorola says that the battery will provide a day’s worth of use and the TurboPower charging will add 8 hours of power in just minutes of charging.
Moto Z2 Force Edition will be available from all four major carriers in the country as well as U.S. Cellular, Best Buy, and Motorola.com. Pre-orders start today. It’s going to be released on August 10th with prices starting at $30 per month with a base price of $720.
