This Sticker Can Apparently Detect When Sexual Assault Is Taking Place

There have been quite a number of devices invented to help women report sexual assault and to fend of attackers. This has come in the form of whistles, panic buttons, smartphone apps, and so on. However for the most part, it also involves the user having to manually activate it themselves, which sometimes isn’t always possible.

This is clearly something that needs to be addressed, which is what MIT researcher Manisha Mohan has done in which she has created a device called Intrepid that the user can wear on their person. It comes in the form of a sticker which pairs with an app for the user’s smartphone that can alert up to five contacts should it be triggered.

So how does Intrepid get triggered? It detects how your clothes are being taken off, so when it detects that maybe it is being removed awkwardly (like if you were passed out and someone is trying to take advantage of you) or forcibly, it will activate and send messages to your emergency contacts unless you were to confirm that everything is in fact okay.

Users will be able to place the sticker to different pieces of clothing, depending on preference. It can also reportedly survive a wash cycle should you forget to remove it. According to Mohan, she has tested it out with about 70 people to see if they were comfortable using it, and so far it seems that most people have found the sticker to be non-invasive.

OnePlus Reportedly Sending Push Notification Ads To Its Devices

We understand that when a company, such as Google, offers its services and products for free, that it means that they need to make money through different means, and that means usually involves ads. But what if you paid full price for a particular product and they still showed you ads anyway, wouldn’t that be kind of irritating?

Unfortunately that’s what’s happening with OnePlus because in a post on Reddit, it seems that the company is pushing ads via notifications to its users. As you can see in the screenshot above courtesy of Bharath Kundapura on Twitter, it shows that OnePlus users are receiving ads for the OnePlus 5 on their existing OnePlus devices.

Now OnePlus is not the first company to introduce ads to its devices. As Android Police notes, in the past companies such as Samsung and HTC have been found equally guilty of such practices. That being said, the post on Reddit suggests that this seems to be found in the Open Beta 9 of the phone’s software, and given that the post was made a month ago, things could have changed since then.

Alternatively if nothing’s changed, the post on Reddit also provides users with instructions on what they can do to block these notifications from showing up on their devices, so check it out if you are receiving these ads as well and you want it to stop.

Nexus 6P Bootloop Problem Fixed At The Cost Of Performance

Last year we heard reports that some Nexus 6P owners were reporting that their phones were stuck in a bootloop, which effectively rendered them useless. This has resulted in lawsuits being considered, and until now an actual fix for the problem has yet to be released by Google or Huawei.

Thankfully the Android community has rallied together and for now, it seems like a fix has been found. However this fix does come at a cost in terms of performance as it essentially disables four of the cores on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, which means that in some instances, especially with more intensive applications, you will notice some lag.

So far based on the feedback given for the fix, many users are reporting that it is successful and that previously bricked Nexus 6P devices are now back up and running. The instructions on how to go about fixing your Nexus 6P can be found on the XDA forums, posted courtesy of XDA member XCnathan32. Whether or not this fix will work for all users remains to be seen, but like we said so far it appears to be successful.

That being said, the Nexus 6P is kind of old by now and presumably users with the problematic phones have either swapped them for a new one or have kept them away. If it is the latter then perhaps this fix will allow you to use your Nexus 6P as a secondary device.

Google Appears To Be Working On A Lossy Image Format For The Web

What defines a good user experience for websites varies, but one of the key factors in determining a good website is how fast it loads. This is because a website that takes several seconds longer than a competitor means that users would much prefer going to the one that can load faster, right?

This means that when designing a website, developers have to take into account things like image format and size, and Google could be working on something on that front. It has been discovered that Google could be working on a new lossy image format for the web called “Pik”. This isn’t the first time that Google has attempted something similar, as in the past the company had launched another lossy image format called WebP.

It is unclear as to how exactly Pik will differ from WebP, but interestingly enough despite the fact that the Pik development is being hosted on the official Google GitHub account, the readme notes says that this is not an official Google product. Perhaps it could be developed by one of Google’s engineers in their own spare time and thus it isn’t official yet, so it remains to be seen what exactly Google is planning for it.

The format is currently in the initial research stage, but for those interested you can head on over to Google’s GitHub for the details.

Fujifilm X-T2S In-Body Stabilization Will Reportedly Work For All Fujinon Lenses

The Fujifilm X-T2 was launched last year but it seems that rumors of a possible refresh have been making its rounds. Just earlier this month a report from Fuji Rumors suggested that a Fujifilm X-T2S could be in the works, and that one of the camera’s key features is in-body image stabilization.

This means that instead of being reliant on lenses to offer stabilization, the camera will offer it. However it seems that there have been some concerns regarding the feature, and that it might only work with some lenses. However according to an update from Fuji Rumors, it seems that the stabilization will work across all of Fujifilm’s Fujinon X-mount lenses.

However we should point out that given how early these rumors are that it should be taken with a grain of salt. As the publication had previously pointed out, in the past there were rumors that an X-Pro1s was in the works as well and had reached prototype stage, but Fujifilm ultimately decided that they would launch the X-Pro2 instead.

This means that there is a good chance the X-T2S may never materialize so maybe we shouldn’t get our hopes up yet, but perhaps Fujifilm could bring the in-body stabilization feature to its other cameras as well.
