TSMC Could Be The Sole Supplier Of Apple’s 2018 A-Series Chips

A recent report out of Korea has suggested that in 2018, Samsung could be brought back into the fold by Apple as being one of their suppliers for their 2018 A-series chipsets that will be used in the iPhone 9 (or whatever it will be called). This means that once again it will be both TSMC and Samsung supplying Apple with the chipsets.

However according to a new report from DigiTimes (via MacRumors), that might not necessarily be the case. The report claims that TSMC is still expected to hold the exclusive rights to supply Apple with the 2018 chipsets. Apparently the company’s integrated fan-out wafer-level packaging technology used in its 7nm FinFET chip fabrication process is seen as more “superior” compared to what Samsung can do.

Samsung is said to be aggressively trying to vye for Apple’s business, but there is a chance that despite Samsung’s close ties to OLED production, which Apple could use in the iPhone 8 and future iPhones, it might not be enough to convince Apple to go with them as a chipset manufacturer for 2018’s iOS devices.

However even they were to be chosen, we guess at the end of the day Apple usually tries to even out the experience, meaning that end-users shouldn’t be able to tell if a chipset has come from Samsung or TSMC, but either way take it with a grain of salt for now.

Viber Wants You To Start Shopping From Your Keyboard

One of the reasons why online shopping is so popular is the fact that you can shop from just about anywhere. You can shop while on the go, while sitting on the toilet, while eating, and have it all delivered to your home when it’s all said and done. So what if you were chatting halfway with a friend on a messenger platform and could buy something on the spot? Is that something you might be interested in?

Apparently Viber thinks that it might as the company has recently acquired Chatter Commerce. For those unfamiliar with Chatter Commerce, they are the developers behind mobile shopping keyboard app ShopChat. If you haven’t heard of ShopChat, it is an app that basically replaces the keyboard on your phone with access to the inventory of a variety of retailers.

This means that whenever you feel like it, you’ll be able to access a store and purchase something directly within the keyboard itself, as opposed to having to launch your browser or a separate app to make your purchase, thus increasing the convenience which in turn could encourage users to shop more.

Viber has since integrated ShopChat’s technology into its app and according to the company, about 30% of its users in the US have already used the feature since the launch. We’re not sure if this is the best way to do your shopping, but you cannot deny that it is convenient.

Survey Finds That Instagram Is The Platform Of Choice For Cyberbullies

When it comes to online harassment, it seems like Twitter has gotten a pretty bad rep, thus forcing the company to step up their efforts in protecting their users from trolls and cyberbullies with various privacy and blocking tools. However it seems that while Twitter is getting the brunt of the bad rep, Instagram could actually have a problem of its own.

According to British anti-bullying organization Ditch The Label, their new annual survey has found (via TechCrunch) that platforms such as Instagram are actually the platform of choice for cyberbullies, or at least based on data collected from participants aged 12-20 years in age. According to the survey, 42% reported to having been bullied on Instagram, followed by 37% on Facebook (who owns Instagram), and 31% on Snapchat.

The survey also found that 70% of participants believe that digital platforms aren’t doing enough to prevent cyberbullying. To be fair, Instagram has been trying to do their part in curbing online abuse. Last year the company introduced options for users to turn off comments on posts, and just last month they also introduced a new AI filter that helps to block offensive comments.

That being said, perhaps the result of this survey could motivate Instagram to step up their efforts when it comes to protecting their users from online harassment, trolls, and cyberbullies, especially if they’re hoping for the platform to be a place for users to spend their time on socially and for commerce purposes.

Alleged Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Renders Pop Up Online

Following the successful launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and also the disastrous launch of the Note 7 back in 2016, it is safe to say that many are highly-anticipating the upcoming Note 8 handset, to see if Samsung can right the wrong from last year’s Note 7 launch, and if they can carry forward the momentum of the Galaxy S8’s success.

We should be finding out pretty much as Samsung has since confirmed the handset’s launch for the 23rd of August, and in the meantime for those who are curious about what the phone could look like, the folks at BGR have managed to get their hands on some exclusive renders that allegedly shows what the phone could look like.

As you can see in the renders above, and assuming they’re accurate, the Note 8 seems to be taking a page out of the Galaxy S8’s design book. It seems to be quite a “tall” phone, although the renders make it hard to judge if this is indeed a 6.4-inch display as previously rumored. However it looks like the bezels are pretty thin, giving the illusion that the phone is all display.

The renders also shows that the Note 8 will be packing dual rear-facing cameras, also as per the previous rumors, and it looks like Samsung will be sticking with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is a sleek looking device and hopefully the actual handset will look like these renders, so check back with us next month for the details.

Skyrim For The Nintendo Switch Demoed On Video

When the Nintendo Switch was first announced, many were surprised when they spotted footage of what appeared to be Skyrim playing on the console. For some reason neither Nintendo nor Bethesda could confirm it despite the fact that it was pretty obvious, but at E3 2017, it was pretty much a done deal.

For those who are curious as to what the game might look like on the Switch if you were actually playing it, YouTuber FILIP has uploaded a video of Skyrim being played on the Switch in handheld mode. For starters it is pretty cool because being such a big game, it did seem like a huge win for Nintendo to get the game running on the Switch.

Secondly the handheld mode offers up a unique playing style that is different from the other styles that were offered from before. It’s a bit hard to judge the quality of the graphics based on this video since we are looking at a recording of a screen, but FILIP claims that the game looks “gorgeous” with a steady framerate.

The version of Skyrim on the Switch will come with all of its released DLCs thrown in for free, much like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so if you’ve never played the game before, the Switch version could be worth your consideration. There is still no set release date for the game but it should be out by the end of the year.

Major Tech Companies Side Apple In Their Fight Against Qualcomm

By now most of you might have heard against Apple’s legal battle against chipmaker Qualcomm. Despite having worked together for many years, it seems like their relationship has reached the breaking point where both companies are suing each other, with Qualcomm even seeking to ban the iPhone from being imported into the US.

Recently we’ve heard how some of Apple’s manufacturing partners have stood up against Qualcomm, and it looks like they’re not alone. A report from Reuters has revealed that many other major tech companies are now backing Apple in their lawsuit against Qualcomm. According to the report, this comes in the form of a lobbying group that represents major tech companies.

The group known as the Computer & Communications Industry Association includes companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Intel, and Samsung, just to name a few. Now obviously these companies taking a stand aren’t doing so for altruistic reasons, but rather it seems that they are arguing that should the ITC ban Apple from importing foreign-assembled iPhones that uses Intel’s chips, it could have a significant impact on supply for phones that would ultimately hurt consumers.

According to Ed Black, the CEO of the group, “If the ITC were to grant this exclusion order, it would help Qualcomm use its monopoly power for further leverage against Apple and allow them to drive up prices on consumer devices. What’s at stake here is certainly the availability of iPhones and other smartphones at better prices.” We’re not sure how long this lawsuit will be dragged out, but Qualcomm has recently expressed their hopes that it could be settled out of court.

YouTube Redirects Searches For Extremist Videos To Anti-Terrorism Playlists

Given that anyone can upload a video onto YouTube, sometimes this has resulted in users uploading copyrighted videos, pornographic videos, and videos with offensive content, most of which are taken down rather swiftly or prevented from being uploaded in the first place, but somehow, some way, such videos do manage to find their way back.

However it seems that in the future should anyone try searching for extremism videos on YouTube, they will instead be redirected to anti-terrorism playlists. As reported by Tubefilter, this is part of The Redirect Method, which is part of Google’s plan and strategy to try and quash extremist ideologies across its platforms.

According to YouTube, they will be expanding on this feature where it will cover a wider set of search queries in other languages besides English. It will also use machine learning to dynamically update the search query terms to ensure that the feature stays on top of the latest search topics/trends, and that they will also be working with NGOs to help develop new content that will counter “violent extremist messaging at different parts of the radicalization funnel”.

While there are probably a ton of other places on the internet where one can find such extremist content, at the very least one of the biggest video platform will not be one of them, or at least that’s the plan.
