OnePlus 5 911 Bug Fix Coming Soon

A couple of days ago we heard about a bug that was irking many OnePlus 5 owners. Several OnePlus 5 owners had reported that they were unable to dial 911 on their handset. Whenever they tried to do that the handset would just reboot. That’s certainly not an ideal scenario because you want to be able to reach emergency services at all times. OnePlus has figured out the issue and will be rolling out a fix soon.

Back when this issue was first reported, OnePlus had said that it was looking into the problem and that it had reached out to the users who were experiencing this issue to find out precisely what was causing the handset to reboot when 911 was dialed.

OnePlus has now sent out a statement confirming that it has tested a software update which has resolved the issue. It adds that the software update in question is going to be rolled out shortly.”

It would put a lot of users at ease if OnePlus rolls out this fix quickly. No one wants to be caught in a situation when they have to call 911 but are unable to because that’s the moment their handset picks to reboot on its own.

That being said, this over-the-air update for the OnePlus 5 shouldn’t be long now.

Company Making Nokia-Branded Smartphones Loses Its CEO

You will have definitely heard of Nokia even if you’ve never heard of HMD Global. The latter is a Finland-based company that’s now making smartphones and slapping Nokia’s name on them under license from the company. There appears to be some top-level shakeup at HMD Global. The company has confirmed that its CEO Arto Nummela has decided to depart the company with immediate effect.

HMD Global entered into this business by acquiring the manufacturing and distribution assets of Nokia’s phone business from Microsoft last year. It also licensed Nokia’s brand to sell smartphones using the iconic brand name.

HMD has not revealed the reason behind his sudden departure from the position. The company’s statement only mentions that “through mutual agreement between Chief Executive Officer Arto Nummela and the HMD Global Board of Directors, Arto Nummela will leave HMD with immediate effect.”

Florian Seiche, currently the president at HMD Global, will be taking additional charge as the CEO. It’s unclear why Nummela has decided to leave HMD Global and that too close to the launch of the company’s first proper flagship smartphone.

The company’s board isn’t giving any hints as well, with Sam Chin, the Chairman of the Board, merely saying that “Arto Nummela has played a key role in the creation of the HMD Global operation, building the team and launching our first products,”

Windows 10 Updates For Atom PCs Ruled Out By Microsoft

It was reported several days ago that users with PCs powered by Intel Atom Clover Trail processors were facing difficulties in trying to install Windows 10 Updates. They were basically unable to install the latest Windows 10 Creators Update. There was some confusion initially regarding this and many believed that Microsoft would sort this out and those users would be able to get the updates as they would have normally. However, Microsoft has now confirmed that it will not be releasing Windows 10 updates for devices powered by Intel Atom Clover Trail processors.

Most devices powered by Intel Atom Clover Trail processors were released in the Windows 8 era. All those users received a free upgrade to Windows 10 so that they could get on the latest iteration of the operating system as well. However, now that they’re on it, they won’t receive any more feature updates.

A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that these PCs require additional hardware support to provide the best possible experience on Windows 10 Creators Update.

“However, these systems are no longer supported by Intel (End of Interactive Support), and without the necessary driver support, they may be incapable of moving to the Windows 10 Creators Update without a potential performance impact,” the spokesperson added.

Microsoft has said that it’s going to offer those users the older Windows 10 Anniversary Update instead. The company will also provide them with security updates until January of 2023, as long as they’re running the Anniversary Update.

Samsung Will Pay Good Money For A New QLED TV Stand Design

Samsung wants to redesign its QLED TV stand and it has teamed up with popular design magazine Dezeen to launch a competition that is free to enter for all professional designers, non-designers, students and teams. It’s also going to accept entries from individuals and teams of designers.

All those who submit their entries must be over 18 and able to present their design to a panel of English-speaking judges. They also have to be available from August 26 to September 2 as Samsung will invite the five finalists to the IFA 2017 trade show in Berlin.

Samsung is asking contestants to rethink the dimension and shape of its QLED TV stand. The designs that are submitted can either be freestanding or table-mounted. Samsung encourages participants to use innovative materials.

The company wants the designs to be outstanding, designs which show that the TV is no longer just a technology item but a lifestyle product. Participants should have a certain lifestyle in mind and their design should match it. For example, this can be luxurious, minimal or eccentric.

Samsung has a prize pool of €30,000 for this contest. The winning design receives €8,000 and the other four finalists get €3,000 each. The 10 entrants that make it to the shortlist will receive €1,000 each.

Contestants will also have the chance to ink a separate agreement with Samsung over the rights to use their design. The ownership of the design will remain with the designer.

More details about the contest as well as the technical files and specifications are available on Dezeen’s website. Entries are due by August 1.

U.S. Laptop Ban Has Been Lifted Entirely

Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security announced a ban that came to be known commonly as the laptop ban. It banned passengers flying to the United States from certain countries in the Middle East and via certain Middle Eastern airlines from carrying any electronic device larger than a smartphone into the cabin. This meant that passengers couldn’t even use their laptops during the flight, which as you might imagine, wasn’t ideal for business travelers. The DHS has now announced that the laptop ban announced in March has been completely removed.

The situation started to shift earlier this month when the Department of Homeland Security lifted the ban for three Middle Eastern airlines. It was convinced by the security measures that they had taken to allow their passengers to carry all electronic devices onboard. The ban has been lifted entirely now.

A spokesperson for the DHS has confirmed that given the enhanced security measures in place now, “all restrictions on large PEDs announced in March for 10 airports/9 airlines have been lifted.”

Back when the ban was implemented, it was said that there was evaluated intelligence which suggested that terrorist organizations were looking to smuggle bombs onboard planes by concealing them into consumer electronic devices like laptops.

Following the U.S.’ lead, the United Kingdom also implemented a similar ban on flights operating out of airports in the Middle East and North Africa. The UK’s Department of Transport is keeping the ban in place for now.
