Apple’s Manufacturers Join The Lawsuit Against Qualcomm

In case you haven’t heard, Qualcomm has recently filed a lawsuit against Apple in Germany. However it seems that Apple won’t be alone in their legal battle against Qualcomm because according to a report from Bloomberg, it looks like Apple’s manufacturing partners will be joining them in their legal battle against Qualcomm.

The report claims that Apple’s manufacturers such as Compal, Hon Hai, Wistron, and Pegatron will be fighting back against Qualcomm. The companies have called Qualcomm’s lawsuit against them, “yet another chapter of Qualcomm’s anticompetitive scheme to dominate modem chip markets, extract supracompetitive royalties, and break its commitments to license its cellular technology on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.”

For those unfamiliar, Apple does not actually license anything from Qualcomm, but rather its manufacturers do, and in turn Apple pays them for it. According to Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s general counsel, “We have a contract with each of these manufacturers and they have all been paying us consistently for 10 years. At the end of the day, it all boils down to this company, Apple, not wanting to pay for the valuable intellectual property that we provide to them and the rest of the industry.”

The company has also tried to get the ITC to ban the import of iPhones into the US, although whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.

New Rumor Suggests iPhone SE Will Be Launched In August

While Apple has mostly focused on its flagship iPhones, the company has in the past tried to launch “cheaper” versions of the iPhone in an attempt to widen its appeal, such as the iPhone 5c and the iPhone SE, although admittedly neither of them have had the same amount of success as Apple’s main iPhone lineup.

This is why it did not come as a surprise to learn that Apple might not be refreshing the iPhone SE this year, but apparently that might not be the case. According to a report from French blog iGeneration (via MacRumors), it seems that Apple could actually introduce a new iPhone SE later this year, possibly alongside the new iPhones in late August which is when the rumored event is said to take place.

The article’s author Mickaël Bazoge told MacRumors that the information was received from a new source with an unproven track record, but he still felt that the source seemed “reliable” anyway. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but this is the first time we’re hearing that Apple could have a new iPhone SE.

Last year famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the company would not be refreshing the iPhone SE in the first half of 2017, which proved to be true, but there was no mention as to whether or not this was applicable to the second half. We suppose it remains to be seen, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes and ears peeled for more information.

Apple Patent Lets You Call 911 Using Your Fingerprint

Calling for emergency services is pretty straightforward and easy as dialing 3 digits (the number varies depending on where you’re from), but sometimes in certain situations, it might not be feasible. This is where a recently discovered patent filed by Apple comes in, where it comes up with alternative ways for users to dial 911.

According to the patent, it describes how one could use just their fingerprints to make their iPhone dial 911. The system describes how users could set up different fingerprints, patterns, or even pressure so that the phone knows when you’re trying to call 911, as opposed to you just pressing on Touch ID to unlock your device.

For example you could use your thumb to unlock your phone, but maybe you could set it up in such a way that your pinky could be used to activate the 911 call, or maybe repeated presses could trigger it, and so on. However given that sometimes it’s not always convenient to speak during emergencies, like if you’re being held hostage, the system will also help relay the necessary information to the emergency services, like your location.

It could also enable the microphone, or even trigger a live stream video. The patent also talks about how it could potentially wipe the data on your phone so that if you know your phone is being stolen, whoever steals it won’t have access to your information. However given that this is just a patent, there’s no telling if it will become a reality, but it is still a pretty clever system all the same.

LastPass Announces New Family Sharing Feature Coming This Summer

Passwords are generally a personal thing, but sometimes certain things might be required for sharing. For example if you and your partner share the same bank account, then obviously both of you would need to know the password, and the same can be applied to other things like paying the bills for phone, internet, utilities, and etc.

With so many things to keep track of, things could get confusing and password manager LastPass has announced a new feature in the form of LastPass Families. According to the company, “Enter LastPass Families, where you can store everything from bank accounts to passports to credit cards. Your details are secure, organized the way you want, and easily shared with your spouse, kids, in-laws, and more. You can even give access to others in the event of an emergency. The family manager can quickly add and remove members to the account, making it easy to get everyone up and running.”

Basically users will be able to choose what passwords and details that they want to share with family members, but at the same time users will also be able to keep personal accounts private in their own vault separate from that of Families. LastPass Families will support up to 6 family members at once, and it only requires one user to purchase the subscription plan.

The feature will be launched later this summer and for those who are interested, you’ll be able to sign up for early access at LastPass’ website.

Facebook Confirms Plans To Launch A New Subscription Service

For the most part, a lot of online publications that are free to read rely on advertisements for generating revenue. However with ad blockers becoming more widely used, and with users turning to alternative sources for their information, new ways of generating revenue need to be invented.

Subscription services are one of those methods, and it seems that publishers will soon have the option of using Facebook as a subscription service. This was confirmed by Facebook exec Campbell Brown who said, “One of the things we heard in our initial meetings from many newspapers and digital publishers is that ‘we want a subscription product — we want to be able to see a paywall in Facebook,’ and that is something we’re doing now. We are launching a subscription product.”

The inclusion of this feature came about after news publications complained that they had little control over what their stories were being shared on the platform, and how companies such as Facebook and Google were benefiting from the work of newspapers without “fairly” compensating the publishers.

The tests for this new subscription service is expected to kick off this October, but details such as pricing have yet to be revealed, but we suppose we will have the official details in due time.
