Doctor Who TARDIS Console Light Is a Lava Lamp from Gallifrey

I’ve tried to watch Doctor Who and it just doesn’t excite me, but there are legions of fans out there who love that show. When it comes to British TV, The IT Crowd is more my speed. I thought that show was hilarious. Regardless of my opinion, Whovians will certainly recognize this desk lamp as the TARDIS console.

This is essentially a lava lamp with Doctor Who trappings on it. This lamp won’t help you travel through space and time, but it will give you something to look at and burn your fingers on.

It measures 18″ tall and melts the goopy orange “lava” using a good old 25-watt incandescent light bulb. The lamp sells for $29.99(USD) and is available from ThinkGeek now.

Google feed puts personalized news stream in the mobile app

Google‘s flagship app is getting a rather major update today on both iOS and Android. The update is adding a new personalized news feed that Google refers to as only “the feed.” Much like Google Now, this feed aims to deliver information on the stuff you’re interested in, but it takes the functionality of Google Now a little bit further. … Continue reading

Apple’s ‘Planet of the Apps': lousy TV, good for developers

Ashley D’Arcy always dreamed of being on a reality TV show. But her job as a creative director for a chatbot doesn’t frequently put her in front of a camera. D’Arcy’s dream was realized, however, when she and dozens of other app makers were thrown in…

The Taco Town Fifteen-Flavor Taco Looks Delicious in Real Life

I haven’t watched Saturday Night Live since Chris Farley was worried about living in a van down by the river. I much prefer the classic ’80s version with Eddie Murphy over all modern varieties because it was actually funny. Apparently, this massive, gross, yet oddly tantalizing 15-flavor taco is the key food from a 2005 commercial parody from the long-running comedy show.

Binging With Babish host Andrew Rea managed to whip up the actual 15-flavor taco. To make the massive taco he took a crepe, a pizza, multiple tacos, and then smashed it all together and deep fried it. It sounds like something you would get at the fair.

After all the frying was done he put the taco into a bag of chili. Not the green water stuff they call chili here in Colorado, but the red and chunky sort that we had in Texas. I really want to eat this thing.

Flappy Bird is Back… On a Dreamcast Memory Card

We thought that we had heard the last of Flappy Bird, but it is back in a not so big way – on a Dreamcast memory card. The long-dead console still has a massive fanbase, so it is no wonder that one hacker has ported the game to the Dreamcast’s interactive memory card. Because why not?

The Visual Memory Unit was a unique memory card that plugged into the Dreamcast’s controllers to store game data, or act as a second-screen for some games since it has a monochrome LCD display. It even has basic controls.

Dmitry Grinberg created a custom ARM Cortex chip emulator that runs on the VMU’s CPU, allowing it to run the game, albeit very slowly. Despite the speed, it’s actually even harder to play thanks to the sucky button responsiveness. Still, it’s a neat hack.
