The International Space Station Has an Adorable Camera Drone

Astronauts get all the cool robot toys, and the folks on board the International Space Station have a new robotic companion now. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has released the first images shot by the “Int-Ball,” a spherical camera that floats around alongside the rest of the crew in their zero-gravity environment.

It looks cute enough to be in a Wall-E movie. The Int-Ball can move around autonomously or be controlled by operators on Earth. The images it takes are transferred in near real-time allowing JAXA staff to quickly evaluate any problems and offer possible solutions to ISS astronauts

That puts it to good use, but Int-Ball could also make astronauts more efficient. Crew members spend 10 percent of their working hours with a camera in their hand after all. So this little guy could give them more time to conduct experiments and carry out repairs. It sounds like it is going to be a very handy robot, and it’s just so adorable.

Japanese Engineers Create A Headset-Free VR Experience

The thing about virtual reality (VR) right now is that it requires a headset in order to experience it. This means that in terms of freedom of movement, it can be a bit limiting since headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift require it to be tethered to a computer, which can feel a bit unnatural since VR is meant to simulate reality (albeit a different kind).

However it seems that over in Japan, engineers have managed to create a VR experience which does not involve a headset. Put together by the engineers at the Wonder Vision Techno Laboratory, this headset-free VR experience involves two swivelling chairs that are placed in front of a semi-spherical screen that pretty much covers your entire field of vision.

According to Makoto Nakahira, one of the engineers at the company, “Unlike the conventional flat screen, you can see images coming closer to you physically in this dome screen. This is a system in which you can experience visuals that you have never seen before.” In a way it is almost similar to those rides that you might have experienced at theme parks, except maybe a tad more immersive.

Unfortunately this also means that this setup is clearly not designed for homes in mind, but we guess it does have the potential to be a ride for theme parks in the future.

iPhone 8’s Touch ID Could Find Its Way Into The Power Button Instead

There has been a bit of speculation regarding the placement of Touch ID in the upcoming iPhone 8. Some rumors are saying it will be embedded in the display, while some are saying it could be placed on the back. Now a new report by Gordon Kelly at Forbes has suggested a new potential placement for the fingerprint scanner.

According to the report, it seems that Kelly has managed to obtain CAD files that are allegedly that of the iPhone 8, and together with case designer Nodus, they have managed to piece together a rendering of what the phone could look like. He also states that the power button on the iPhone 8 will be larger, and because of its larger size, Apple could potentially fit Touch ID into it as an alternative should the in-screen sensor not work out.

This is an interesting choice as companies such as Sony have adopted a similar placement for their phones. Whether or not Apple will resort to this placement remains to be seen. Other nuggets of information in Kelly’s report “confirms” the new orientation of the dual cameras on the phone, which apparently are better for taking photos in landscape mode.

He also confirms that the Lightning port will remain so for those worried that Apple might swap to USB-C, you can relax knowing that your Lightning-based accessories will still be compatible. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of the design? Is this an iPhone you might be interested in?

Netflix Is Now Boasting More Than 100 Million Subscribers

For the longest time ever, Netflix’s reach was somewhat limited, at least until early last year where Netflix announced that they would be expanding into 130 new markets. This meant that there would be millions of potential customers who could finally officially subscribe to the service without the need for a VPN.

It seems that their plan has paid off because according to the latest figures, Netflix has managed to blow past the 100 million subscriber mark. The company had previously managed to hit 100 million in April, and now the latest figures show that the company is chugging along rather nicely as they are currently sitting at around 104 million.

According to the company, they have also managed to top 50 million paying customers in the US market alone. In its earnings release, the company said, “With our content strategy paying off in strong member, revenue and profit growth, we think it’s wise to continue to invest. In continued success, we will deploy increased capital in content, particularly in owned originals, and, as we have said before, we expect to be [free cash flow] negative for many years.”

Netflix currently has plans to debut 40 movies later this year, as well as a bunch of new TV series and new seasons of existing TV series, so it looks like it will be a pretty busy year for the company.
