Tech Companies Could Soon Be Forced To Decrypt Messages In Australia

When companies like WhatsApp announced that they would be decrypting messages sent and received between users, it sounded like a good thing, especially for users concerned about security like hacking and intercepting messages, and also privacy where it would be difficult for them to be spied on.

Unfortunately governments around the world don’t seem to be taking too kindly to these efforts, and as we have seen in the past, US law enforcement agencies have tried to decrypt platforms like Apple’s iOS. Now it seems that in Australia, something similar could happen as the Australian government has recently proposed a new cybersecurity law that would force tech companies to decrypt messages upon request by law enforcement, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was quoted as saying in a statement made to reporters, “We’ve got a real problem in that the law enforcement agencies are increasingly unable to find out what terrorists and drug traffickers and pedophile rings are up to because of the very high levels of encryption. Where we can compel it, we will, but we will need the cooperation from the tech companies.”

Whether or not this law will be passed remains to be seen, and if it does, we have to wonder how tech companies such as Apple and Google will react to them.

Mass Effect Andromeda 10 Hour Trial Now Available

While the original Mass Effect trilogy was a much beloved series, it seems that BioWare could not achieve that same level of success with Mass Effect Andromeda. By no means is it a terrible game, but it seems that it did leave players wanting. If you’ve yet to try it out and are wondering if it is worth your investment, wonder no more.

This is because the 10 hour free trial is now available to all those who are interested. Prior to this, the 10 hour free trial was only available to EA Access subscribers, so for those who weren’t subscribers, they were out of luck, at least until now. Basically players will be able to clock up to 10 hours of game time which they can spend either in single-player mode or multiplayer mode, so it’s not as if the trial will have heavy limitations imposed on it.

In fact gamers who do decide to upgrade to the full copy of the game will have their saves transferred over, so you won’t have to start all over again. However the only requirement (besides hardware requirements) is that you will need Origin, which is EA’s equivalent of Steam in order to get your hands on the free trial.

That being said, the future of the franchise is kind of in limbo at the moment. There have been reports that BioWare has put the game on hold for now, but exactly what will happen from here on out is anyone’s guess, but maybe you should take up the 10 hour trial to decide if you like the game or not.

Pokemon GO Ring Accessory Announced In Japan

Last year an official accessory for Pokemon GO was launched in the form of the Pokemon GO Plus. This is basically a tracker for your wrist that would alert you to Pokemon and other activities related to the game. The idea is that it will help you keep up to date with the game without your phone’s display being on all the time, thus saving you some battery.

Now it looks like players who aren’t too thrilled about the idea of a band will have another option they can check out, and this comes in the form of the Pokemon GO Plus Ring. As you can see in the photo to the right, this is basically the same Pokemon GO Plus accessory, except that it comes with a ring attachment where you could hook it onto your finger, or wear it around your neck with a string, or hook it onto your bag, and so on.

However for now it seems that this particular accessory is only being launched in Japan where it will retail for 400 yen, making it a pretty affordable accessory for gamers to get their hands on. We’re not sure if there are plans to eventually expand the ring’s availability to other parts of the world, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information. In the meantime Pokemon GO has recently received a pretty huge update in terms of a raid battle feature, and with more features expected to be added, such as Legendary Pokemon, perhaps these accessories are coming at a good time.

Samsung Galaxy A5, A7 (2017) To Get Android Nougat Update Soon

Despite Samsung launching both the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A7 earlier this year, both phones were not launched with the latest Android operating system installed, Android 7.0 Nougat. However the good news is that owners of either device probably won’t have to wait much longer for the update to arrive.

According to reports, it seems that testing of the Nougat update on both phones is currently underway, as spotted on the WiFi Alliance website where the phones were listed with Android 7.0 Nougat installed. This suggests that Samsung has gotten the update up and running on the phones, and we guess it’s only a matter of time before they are released to the public.

Unfortunately with Nougat only being released this late in the year, one has to wonder about what this means for the Android 8.0 update which is expected to be released later this year. We’re not sure if either device would qualify for the update since OEMs usually prefer to focus on their flagships, but either way we guess an update to Nougat would do for now.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more information and will update you guys accordingly whenever the update has been released.

New Nintendo 3DS Discontinuation Will Not Affect The US

Earlier it was reported that Nintendo Japan had announced that the new Nintendo 3DS was being discontinued, thus leaving the 2DS and XL models as the only remaining models part of Nintendo’s handheld lineup. Some were wondering if this could affect other markets, such as the US, but apparently that isn’t something we need to be concerned about.

Speaking to Games Industry, Nintendo of America confirmed that the discontinuation in the US will not affect the US market. “This announcement does not affect Nintendo of America territories, as the model in question was only sold in limited quantities as special offerings. There are no changes to the sales status of New Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS or the upcoming New Nintendo 2DS XL, which launches on July 28.”

Basically it seems that the American market was never really the target market for the new Nintendo 3DS to begin with, but then again that isn’t that surprising as the larger XL models have typically sold better to begin with, so we guess we can’t really blame Nintendo for that. However if you’re a collector or if maybe you just prefer the smaller 3DS model, then perhaps now would be a good time to snag up whatever units are remaining in the market before they are all gone for good.
