Huawei To Give Up On Creating Low-End Smartphones

One of the reasons why Chinese smartphone makers have been able to catch up to some of the more established players in the market like Apple and Samsung, it is because of their ability to produce extremely cheap devices, catering to emerging markets which don’t have the money to splurge on high-end phones, but are a populous market all the same.

Now Huawei was one of those companies who had no issues churning out cheap handset after cheap handset, but it seems that their time in the low-end segment is done. Speaking to Bloomberg, Huawei’s chief in the company’s consumer division Richard Yu confirmed that they will be giving up on the “very low-end” devices, simply because there is not much profit to be made.

According to Yu, “We are giving up the very low-end devices because the margin in this is extremely low, and it’s not making enough profit for us.” He also adds that Huawei will be focusing on their expansion into other markets. “The priority is Europe, China and Japan, where the economy is healthy and people are able to consume them.”

That being said, this move shouldn’t really come as a surprise as in recent years, Huawei has been making a bigger effort at creating more high-end flagships, such as the Nexus 6P for Google, and also working together with Leica to create smartphones with better camera optics.

Huawei Plans To Take On Apple’s iPhone 8 With The Mate 10

Apart from the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which will be unveiled in August, the next highly-anticipated smartphone that will be hitting the market will be Apple’s iPhone 8. This is doubly exciting because this marks the 10th year of the iPhone, and the rumors are saying Apple could be going all out.

However it seems that Huawei thinks that they will be able to trump Apple in that regard. Speaking to Bloomberg, Huawei’s chief of consumer division Richard Yu stated that he believes that the company’s upcoming Mate 10 will have what it takes to beat the iPhone 8 in terms of design, battery life, and camera features.

According to Yu, “We will have an even more powerful product, The Mate 10, which has much longer battery life with a full-screen display, quicker changing speed, better photographing capability and many other features that will help us compete with Apple.” Unfortunately apart from confirming that the handset does exist, Yu did not reveal what we could expect in terms of specs.

However the Mate 10 has been rumored about for a while now and according to the rumors (which Yu seemed to have confirmed some of them), one of its key features is a bezel-less display. We suppose we’ll have to wait and see if the handset really has what it takes to trump the iPhone 8, although there is a lot more than just hardware specs and features that goes into a consumer’s decision.

Google Hopes To Teach Online Skills To 10 Million People In Africa

As the world starts becoming more hi-tech, the required skills companies are seeking for in employees is changing as well. For example way back in the day, being able to use a typewriter was considered a valuable skill, and that was also the same when you knew how to use word processing software.

Nowadays the ability to use software like Microsoft Office is almost a basic requirement, but unfortunately there are parts of the world where access to computers is limited, meaning that some people will never learn such “basic” skills, but that’s something that Google is hoping to change.

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced that the company will be expanding one of its initiatives launched in April last year to train young Africans in digital skills, with the goal of being able to impart online skills to 10 million Africans over the course of the next five years in a bid to help make them more employable.

According to Pichai, Google is “committing to prepare another 10 million people for jobs of the future in the next five years.” This training will come in the form of in-person and online, and will also be conducted in multiple languages such as Swahili, Hausa and Zulu, and will also ensure that at least 40% of the people participating in the program are women.

WhatsApp Beta For Android Features App Launcher Shortcuts

One of the abilities of Apple’s 3D Touch feature is that users will be able to launch apps with specific commands without having to launch the app first, then finding what they want. For example you could launch a messaging app and go straight to sending a new message, or launching the camera app into video mode directly.

Now it seems that WhatsApp could be gaining a similar feature too, except on Android. As noted by Android Police, it looks like WhatsApp has added app launcher shortcuts in the latest beta of the app. Basically instead of launching the app, users now have the option to launch into specific parts of the app, like the camera, going directly to a starred message/conversation, or creating a new message.

However as Android Police points out, it is unclear why it chooses to display starred chats instead of pinned chats or even recent chats. They also point out the fact that WhatsApp on Android already has quite a few widgets of its own that already offer shortcuts to users, so we’re not sure how much of a difference these changes will make.

That being said, this is still a beta which means that these features are being tested out and could change upon its final release, but what do you guys think of it so far?

Alleged Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Specs Revealed

Recently leaked photos show off what is supposedly the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 Active. Now thanks to leaked slides posted onto Weibo (via SamMobile), some pretty detailed specs of the upcoming smartphone has been revealed, which while we cannot verify if it is real, isn’t really that much of a stretch by today’s standards.

Starting with its display, the specs claim that the Galaxy S8 Active will be feature a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display with an 18:5 aspect ratio. It will also be covered by a Gorilla Glass 5 screen for added durability. Under the hood, the Snapdragon 835 chipset can be found along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with support for microSD, which like we said, sounds like most flagship smartphones these days.

In terms of camera, it seems that it will be retaining the same optics as the Galaxy S8 with a 12MP rear-facing camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. As for how this differs from the regular Galaxy S8, it supposedly comes with IP68 certification and MIL-STD-810G certification for resistance against shocks/drops/extreme temperatures.

If there is one “improvement”, it is also that the phone supposedly packs a 4,000mAh battery which is larger than the Galaxy S8’s 3,000mAh battery. No word on when the phone will be officially announced, but it is expected to be made available via AT&T when it does.
