Photos Of Alleged Microsoft Surface Mini Surfaces

Several years ago, there were rumors that Microsoft could have a smaller Surface tablet in the works called the Surface Mini. This was roughly around the time that smaller sized tablets like the iPad mini were gaining quite a bit of traction, so it wasn’t surprising that Microsoft wanted in on the action too.

However a year later ahead of the Surface Pro 3’s launch, the tablet was reportedly cancelled at the very last minute. At that time it was reported that Microsoft’s newly-appointed CEO Satya Nadella did not believe that the tablet was different enough to compete with the competition, and now thanks to a report from Windows Central, we now know what the tablet looks like.

The publication has managed to get their hands on what is allegedly the Surface Mini. From what we can tell from its design, it seems that the tablet looks more like a larger Windows Phone handset rather than a Surface tablet. The report claims that the tablet has a soft and felt-like texture covering it, and it also features a built-in kickstand, along with support for microSD cards, a micro-USB port for charging, as well as a USB-OTG port.

As for specs, the tablet is said to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with 1GB of RAM, an 8-inch 1440×1080 display, and 32GB of storage. Note that the specs do sound outdated by today’s standards, but back then it was considered to be pretty good. We’re not sure if Microsoft ever plans on revisiting the mini tablet market, but for now this is what things could have been.

LG V30 Midframe Seemingly ‘Confirms’ Wireless Charging

Wireless charging isn’t exactly a new piece of technology, but yet it isn’t quite as ubiquitous as you might think as not many handset OEMs have been quick or particularly eager to adopt the technology. However it seems that the upcoming LG V30 could, at least that’s according to recently leaked images uploaded onto Slashleaks.

The leaked images in question shows the midframe of the handset, which as you can see in the image above clearly shows the wireless charging coils that would help facilitate the wireless charging process. Of course there’s no way of actually confirming if this midframe belongs to the LG V30, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

However it is in line with earlier rumors that did suggest that wireless charging could be a feature. Also given that the competition such as Samsung supports wireless charging, and the rumors that Apple could also introduce wireless charging to the iPhone 8, it makes sense that LG would not want to skip on the feature.

However since there is no official word yet, it’s probably best to not get your hopes up just yet. So far other LG V30-related rumors include the possibility of LG ditching the secondary display in favor of an OLED panel, and that it could be announced at IFA 2017 later this year.

Upside Down Display Could Be The Reason Behind OnePlus 5 Jelly Scrolling

Recently we have been hearing some complaints about the OnePlus 5 and how some users are experiencing a jelly scrolling effect when using the handset. According to our own review of the phone, we did not notice such a thing, but a couple of major publications have and are even considering returning the handset.

OnePlus has since come forward to state that apparently this is “natural” and not a defect, but exactly what could be causing the issue? According to the folks at XDA, it seems that they have “confirmed” that the problem could have been caused by an upside down display, which was actually one of the initial theories that was put forth.

However we should point out that this is not a manufacturing mistake or error. It seems that the handset’s upside down display was done on purpose, although the exact reasons why is unclear. A teardown of both the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5 clearly shows that the display has been inverted, presumably for engineering reasons.

It is unclear why flipping the display is causing the jelly scrolling effect, but users have managed to replicate this effect on other smartphones simply by flipping their screens around. While this doesn’t exactly render the phone unusable, those who are particularly sensitive to things like frame rates might find the stutter annoying. Maybe you might not even notice it, so at the end of the day we guess it’s up to you whether or not you can live with it.

Google Offer 4 Month Free Trials For Play Music & YouTube Red

A lot of companies offer free trials before you sign up for a new service, which is completely understandable since why would you want to pay for a service that you don’t know whether you’ll end up liking or using, right? The length of these trials vary from service to service, but Google is extending those trials for some users.

According to reports, it has been noticed that for some users, they are seeing Google offer up a 4-month trial for services such as Play Music and YouTube Red. At the moment Play Music and YouTube Red already offers trials to users before they sign up which usually runs for about 1-2 months, however like we said, some users are seeing 4 month options.

We’re not sure how widespread this offer is as sometimes Google makes different offers for different regions, markets, or users. For example first-time users who have never signed up for a trial before might be offered longer trials to entice them to sign up, versus users who have signed up before who might not be offered the same deal.

In any case for those who are interested in seeing whether or not the 4 month trial is available to them, head on over to Play Music or YouTube Red for the details.

iOS 11 Removes 3D Touch App Switching Gesture

For those who own the iPhone 6s or newer, you may or may not know about a particular gesture that allows you to swap apps quickly using 3D Touch. However it seems that you might want to start getting used to it not being there because it has been confirmed that Apple will be removing it in iOS 11.

This was confirmed in a tweet by developer Bryan Irace where he filed a Radar about the feature being missing in iOS 11. He later got a response from an Apple engineer who confirmed that the feature was not missing by accident, but rather it was removed intentionally, although the exact reason behind the removal is unclear.

If you’re learning about this feature for the first time, basically what iPhones with 3D Touch can do is press deeply on the left edge of their iPhone’s display to launch the app switcher, and from there they can drag their finger across to switch between apps seamlessly. This is versus the alternative/existing method where you would have to double press on the home button to bring up the app switcher.

Like we said we’re not sure why the feature is removed, and some have speculated that maybe it has to do with the iPhone 8’s rumored bezel-less display, although we don’t see why both features couldn’t exist side-by-side, but either way if you’ve been extremely reliant on it, we guess it’s time to start getting used to the alternative.

Blizzard Had To Build StarCraft Remastered From Scratch

From what we could tell from the announcement trailer, StarCraft Remastered looks exactly like the original game, except with upgraded graphics. If you thought that all Blizzard did was introduce higher-resolution textures and graphics, it seems that the development of the game was more complex than that.

In a report from ArsTechnica, Blizzard revealed that they were pretty much forced to develop the entire game from scratch, thanks to the fact that a lot of the original code and assets for the original Starcraft had been lost. This meant that they had to pay attention to a lot of the details from the original, including weird lighting effects.

According to Blizzard 3D Art Director Brian Sousa, the entire project was “eyeballed” as “We had no code and no art assets.” The team was forced to rebuild the game based on concept artwork, sketches, original boxes, manuals, and so on, although thankfully they did have access to backups of the original audio files.

Regarding the details such as replicating the weird lighting effects, Sousa adds, “Shadows are in the wrong places, and lighting is different across the board. But we wanted to make sure that going into StarCraft Remastered, that [players] recognize everything instantly.” StarCraft Remastered is currently set for a release on the 14th of August where it is priced at $15.

Facebook’s WiFi Finder Now Available Globally

Towards the end of last year, Facebook announced a tool that would help users find free public WiFi. Given that we don’t always know if the location we are at provides WiFi, or if you’re looking for a place that’s confirmed to have WiFi before heading in, this tool will no doubt come in handy.

However at the time of posting, Facebook confirmed that the feature was in testing and only available in select markets, but not anymore as Facebook has since released the tool globally and made it available to everyone. According to Facebook, “Today we’re beginning to roll out Find Wi-Fi everywhere in the world on iPhone and Android. We launched Find Wi-Fi in a handful of countries last year and found it’s not only helpful for people who are traveling or on-the-go, but especially useful in areas where cellular data is scarce.”

“Find Wi-Fi helps you locate available Wi-Fi hot spots nearby that businesses have shared with Facebook from their Page. So wherever you are, you can easily map the closest connections when your data connection is weak.” This tool will be available on both the iOS and Android versions of the Facebook app.

All users have to do is click the “More” tab in Facebook, head to “Find WiFi”, after which they will then be able to locate WiFi hotspots on a map, as well as learn more about the businesses that are hosting them.
