Apple trims its iPod lineup to one lonely model

The iPod is clearly an endangered species after 15 years. Apple has quietly discontinued the iPod nano and iPod shuffle, yanking their product pages from its website. Both MP3 players are hanging around retail stores, but not for long — if you’re…

Scientists can turn crystals into reusable electrical conductors

For some time, scientists have been experimenting with crystals to see if they can become a new kind of memory storage. Now, scientists at Washington State University have figured how to make a transparent crystal conduct electricity. What’s more, it…

Motorcycle helmets finally get decent heads-up display navigation

I’m a huge proponent of reducing any and all distractions while riding a motorcycle, scooter, or moped. Helmets and padded gear are great, but when you get down to it, riders are still just squishy people zipping through traffic next to giant machine…

Comcast ‘Instant TV’ Streaming Service Release Possible By Year-End

There are already quite a few over-the-top internet TV streaming services out there for cord cutters that don’t want a conventional cable TV package and want the flexibility that comes with an OTT service. Comcast is expected to launch its new “Instant TV” online TV streaming service by the end of this year, according to statements made by the company’s executives during its recent earnings conference call.

Reports suggest that Comcast’s new service will be called “Xfinity Instant TV” and that it will be available to subscribers without having to sign up for a set-top box. It will be in direct competition with the likes of Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, and DirecTV Now.

If previous reports are believed, the service is going to include local broadcast channels, at least one premium channel as well as support for cloud DVR. The prices are said to start at $15 per month. Comcast will apparently go with the same model that Sling TV has opted which is to provide a basic set of channels for a set price and then enable subscribers to pick add-on packages with more channels.

Comcast executives have said that no concrete decisions have been made as yet with regards to the price so it’s not confirmed at this point in time. The did reiterate that Instant TV will only be offered to customers in markets where Comcast already has a cable TV presence.

Affordable AMD Ryzen 3 Processors Available Starting Today

AMD has finally confirmed the pricing details about its affordable low-end Ryzen 3 processors. The company has already revealed details about the mid-range and high-end variants of its Ryzen processors and it’s about time that those who were looking forward to the Ryzen 3 chips know just how much they will have to shell out for them. AMD is currently offering two Ryzen 3 processors for purchase to customers.

Prices for the AMD Ryzen 3 processors start at $109. The Ryzen 3 1200 is the base model that’s available starting today for $109. The Ryzen 3 1300X promises a bit more power but costs $129.

Both of the processors use AMD’s Zen cores which the company says can process 52 percent more instructions per clock compared to the previous generation.

The Ryzen 3 1200 features four cores, four threads with clocking at 3.1 GHz at base speed and 3.4GHz with boost speed enabled. The Ryzen 3 1300X also features four cores and four threads. At base speed it offers a performance of 3.5GHz which ramps up to 3.7GHz at boost speed.

AMD mentions that these Ryzen 3 processors are capable of outperforming the competing processors from Intel in gaming settings. The company claimed that the Ryzen 3 1300X can run Tom Clancy’s The Division 10 percent faster than the competing Intel Core i3 7300 chip from its rival.

The two new Ryzen 3 processors are available for purchase starting today.

Apple Gets License To Test 5G Network Technology

The FCC has granted approval to Apple for an experimental license which will enable the company to test 5G network technology. The approval specifically covers short-range millimeter wave spectrum in the 28 GHz and 39GHz bands. The FCC earmarked these chunks of spectrum last year so that companies could start testing 5G technology.

It was reported a few months back that Apple had applied for the experimental license to test 5G technology. The company is going to conduct tests with the aim of providing engineering data “relevant to the operation of devices on wireless carriers’ future 5G networks.”

The data will obviously help Apple as well. It goes without saying that the company is going to release a 5G iPhone at some point in the future. The data will help it prepare for that day.

It’s interesting to note that Apple is testing high-frequency bands because while carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint have recently made announcements related to their own 5G tests, none of them have decided to explore the millimeter wave band for 5G tests.

For its part, T-Mobile is going to focus its 5G network on the 600Mhz spectrum while Sprint will be working on the 2.5GHz band. It’s not surprising to see such split strategies for 5G testing given that there’s no 5G standard in place as yet.

32GB iPod Touch Launched, 16GB And 64GB Discontinued

Apple has shaken up its iPod lineup today. Hammering in the final nail in the 16GB tier’s coffin, Apple today announced that it’s discontinuing the 16GB iPod touch. It has even decided that there’s no need to offer the 64GB storage option anymore. Apple is now offering 32GB as the entry-level capacity for the iPod touch.

The iPod touch hasn’t received a major refresh since two years ago when it was updated with the A8 processor, Apple’s flagship processor at that point in time. It’s unclear if Apple is planning to refresh the iPod touch in the near future.

Perhaps the biggest iPod-related announcement that Apple has made today pertains to two of its legacy models. Apple has discontinued the iPod shuffle and iPod nano. It will no longer sell them directly or restock them at retailers when they eventually run out of stock.

iPod touch customers only have two options to choose from now. The entry-level model now offers 32GB storage instead of 16GB for the same price, it still costs $199.

Apple is also selling a 128GB model of the iPod touch for $299. These are the only two options available to iPod touch customers as the company has decided to discontinue the 64GB model as well.
