Standalone HTC Vive VR Headset Launched In China

The HTC Vive is one of the best tethered virtual reality headsets available on the market today. As is the case with all tethered headsets, it requires a powerful PC setup to function. There has been talk of a standalone virtual reality headset from HTC which wouldn’t require users to carry a PC with them wherever they go. HTC has now launched a new standalone Vive VR headset, but there’s a catch.

The standalone HTC Vive VR headset looks pretty similar to the Daydream headset that the company has been working on. However, since Daydream is owned by Google and Google isn’t welcome in China, it has to make several changes before the headset can be allowed in.

This is why HTC’s standalone VR headset is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with the company’s proprietary virtual reality platform.

There isn’t a lot of information available about the specs of this handset but it would be reasonable to assume that it’s quite similar to the Vive Daydream headset that’s due to be released later this year.

HTC has only announced the standalone Vive VR headset for customers in China today. This would be the first time that the Viveport store and all of the content it offers will become available in China.

The company is quiet about the price so it’s not known how much the standalone headset is cost, but it’s likely going to be lower than the Vive’s $800 price tag.

Samsung Pay On Non-Samsung Phones Remains A Possibility

Digital payments services like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay restrict the functionality to their native devices. It’s one of the many ways that companies like Apple and Samsung can increase customer retention in a fast-changing mobile landscape. To that end, it appears that Samsung has a grander vision for Samsung Pay, one which involves bringing the payment service to non-Samsung smartphones.

Samsung’s mobile payments service, called Samsung Pay, is only available on select flagship and premium mid-range smartphones as well as the Gear S3 smartwatch in certain markets. According to a new report, Samsung has held internal talks as well as with OEMs about the idea of expanding Samsung Pay to non-Samsung devices.

Samsung Pay has been able to make a name for itself so quickly because it has support for both NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission). This is the functionality that enables Samsung Pay users to pay with the app if the merchant doesn’t have an NFC terminal.

Since MST mimics a card swipe, all customers require is a conventional credit card machine. MST is made possible on devices like the Galaxy S8 by a small chip that’s installed in the device’s rear panel.

Today’s report claims that Samsung may integrate that chip into non-Samsung devices to offer customers the full Samsung Pay experience. The other option that Samsung is said to be considering includes an accessory which will bring the full payments service experience to other devices.

Samsung has not yet confirmed or denied the report.

Bill Gates Is No longer The World’s Richest Person, Jeff Bezos Is

Microsoft co-founder and ex-CEO Bill Gates has long been considered to be the richest person in the world. He’s certainly one of the richest men alive right now but he has only held the spot formally since 2013. It appears that he now has to make way for another tech titan to claim the spot from him. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is now the richest man on this planet.

Bill Gates had a net worth of around $90 billion at the close of markets yesterday. However, as Bloomberg reports, a surge in Amazon’s stock price has pushed Bezos to the top of the list. The surge in the company’s stock price is due to its earnings report that’s due later today.

Bezos was close behind Gates at the close of markets yesterday with a net worth of $89 billion. Amazon’s stock has surged around $15 this morning while Microsoft’s shares have declined slightly, the surged pushed Bezos over the $90 billion mark. This has led to a shuffle at the top and if the price holds, Bezos may extend his lead further as the world’s richest man.

Bezos is now the sixth man ever to be considered the world’s richest person over the last three decades. He has finally made it to the very top of the list after almost 20 years have passed since he originally joined the “Three Comma Club.”

Since the net worth of these tech titans is significantly tied to their holdings in the companies that they started, any shift could bring about a change at the very top. It’s not like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are both sitting on $90 billion in cash, each.

Tasty One Top Is BuzzFeed’s First Smart Appliance

Smart appliances are gradually becoming popular so it’s not surprising to see different players trying to establish a footing in this market. BuzzFeed is probably the last name you would have expected to hear at the end of the previous sentence, but as it turns out, the company has been working on its very first smart appliance called the Tasty One Top. The smart appliance is now available for pre-order.

BuzzFeed isn’t a hardware company so you wouldn’t expect it to sell you hardware. It’s a digital media company so you’d expect it to provide you with a never ending supply of memes and lists.

The Tasty One Top project is actually part of BuzzFeed Product Labs, a division which was formed after the company acquired e-commerce startup Scroll last year. The idea behind the acquisition was to try out different ideas and see what presented commercial growth opportunities for BuzzFeed.

If the name didn’t already give it away, Tasty One Top has the same branding as Tasty, BuzzFeed’s very popular cooking brand. BuzzFeed has also launched a new Tasty app which brings almost 1,700 video recipes. The app is only available for iOS right now but will arrive for Android soon.

Since the One Top is a smart appliance, the idea is to make it easier for people who find a recipe they like to actually make it. The One top is an induction cooktop that’s Bluetooth enabled, the cooktop supports cooking with sous vide as well as conventional pots and pans. It not only measures the utensil’s surface temperature but also has a thermometer to measure the food’s internal temperature.

BuzzFeed will start shipping the Tasty One Top in November. It’s taking pre-orders starting today for $149.

First Tesla Model 3 Deliveries Will Be Live Streamed

It has been a long wait for those who put money down for a Tesla Model 3. The company’s first mass-market all-electric car will finally be handed over to customers tomorrow, at least some of them. The company is going to hand over the first 30 Model 3 cars to the lucky customers at a special event tomorrow. Since it’s a pretty monumental moment, the company is going to live stream the whole shebang.

It goes without saying that the Model 3 is a very important product for Tesla. It’s the first car from the company that the average customer will be able to purchase. Previous electric cars from Tesla have started from $70,000 and have gone all the way over and above $100,000. That’s not the kind of money the average customer spends on a car, an electric car no less.

Tesla has already received orders for more than 400,000 units of the Model 3 so it’s clear that people are willing to buy an electric car at affordable rates. Tesla has shown with products like the Model S and Model X that it’s quite capable of making a great electric car.

Tesla is going to live stream the handover event tomorrow at 8:45 PM PT. The first Model 3 will go to Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk himself who received rights to the first car from board member Ira Ehrenpreis as a birthday gift.

Production will be gradually ramped up in the coming months and deliveries will pick up the pace. Tesla is going to roll out 100 Model 3 units next month followed by 1,500 in September and eventually ramping up production to 10,000 units per week.

Grand Theft Auto 6 May Possibly Be In Development

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular gaming franchises, it has been for years, so it goes without saying that the company won’t be stopping this gravy train any time soon. The previous title, Grand Theft Auto 5, has proven to be very successful for the company as it has shipped more than 80 million units since it was launched on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. If a new report is to be believed, Rockstar may have started development on Grand Theft Auto 6.

According to the report, stuntman Tim Neff recently updated his iStunt resume recently. One of the latest projects listed on his resume mentions that he has been working on “Grand Theft Auto VI (6),” which if true, undoubtedly refers to the next-generation GTA title.

This isn’t the first time that GTA 6 has been rumored and given that Rockstar has every reason to keep this franchise around, it won’t be surprising when it eventually makes GTA 6 official.

Stunt actors are relied upon heavily during the development of a game like Grand Theft Auto for the purpose of motion capture. As is the case with the main actors in movies and TV shows, there are some stunts and action sequences that they can not do, so professional stuntmen are called in.

Rockstar hasn’t said anything about GTA 6 at this point in time and it may be a while before it does. Nevertheless, fans will obviously be looking forward to the next-generation title.
