WhatsApp Now Boasting 1 Billion Active Daily Users

Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp was considered to be one of the more expensive tech acquisitions in recent times, but it seems that Facebook’s acquisition was a good one because it looks like acquiring WhatsApp has given Facebook access to a ton of users, which according to WhatsApp’s recent announcement, is at 1 billion active daily users.

According to WhatsApp, “Just last year, we shared that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every month. Today, we are excited and proud to share that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every day to stay in touch with their family and friends. Whether it’s sharing personalized photos and videos, connecting through video calling, or keeping friends updated throughout the day with Status, communicating on WhatsApp has never been easier or more personal.”

This is indeed a huge milestone to be able to jump from 1 billion monthly users to 1 billion daily users. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had expressed his opinion several years ago that WhatsApp could hit the 2-3 billion mark, and it seems that the app is well on its way to do so. Zuckerberg had also previously stated that he believes the company is worth more than $19 billion, although right now it is unclear as to how Facebook plans on monetizing the service more efficiently.

Amazon Expands To Southeast Asia By Launching Prime Now In Singapore

While Amazon does ship to many parts of the world, in terms of localized operations, the company doesn’t have operations in every country yet, meaning that for a lot of customers, they still have to put up with long shipping times and hefty shipping prices because of that. However it seems that those living in Southeast Asia can rejoice as Amazon has expanded into the region.

There were rumors earlier this week that Amazon could be expanding into Southeast Asia, and those rumors have since been confirmed with Amazon launching its Prime Now service in Singapore. This is the first time Amazon is stepping foot into Southeast Asia and will be taking on local competitors.

For those unfamiliar with Prime Now, basically it offers up faster shipping if you don’t mind paying for it. Customers in Singapore are given two options, with one option priced at S$5.99 to deliver purchases within 2 hours, while a $9.99 option is also available for deliveries in 1 hour, although this is only to select postal codes. All orders above $40 will be given free 2 hour deliveries.

Deliveries are also made seven days a week, so there is no worry about ordering on a weekend and only having the order fulfilled during working days. Right now customers in Singapore won’t need a Prime membership in order to take advantage of its Prime Now service, but it is only for a limited period of time. No word on when Amazon plans to expand to other parts of Southeast Asia, but we expect that Singapore is just the first step.

Google Has Killed Off Its ‘Instant Search’ Feature

We’re not sure how many of you guys noticed, but Google used to have this feature called Google Instant that basically displayed search results as you typed out your query. The idea has probably to do with efficiency as pages load as you type them out, but like we said, Google used to have such a feature because it seems like they have killed it off.

In a statement provided by a Google spokesperson to Search Engine Land, the company confirmed that the feature had been killed off. “We launched Google Instant back in 2010 with the goal to provide users with the information they need as quickly as possible, even as they typed their searches on desktop devices.”

Google claims that the reason behind this is because of the shift to mobile. “Since then, many more of our searches happen on mobile, with very different input and interaction and screen constraints. With this in mind, we have decided to remove Google Instant, so we can focus on ways to make Search even faster and more fluid on all devices.”

Google Instant was originally launched in 2010 while under the leadership of Marissa Mayer (who later went on to become Yahoo’s CEO). This move by Google doesn’t really come as a surprise either as the company has been shifting their focus to mobile.

McDonald’s Turns Its Cardboard Drink Trays Into Smartphone Speakers

When you order multiple drinks at McDonald’s to go, usually what happens is that they will give you a drink tray made out of cardboard to help hold them. We’re sure that what many of you guys do when you’re done with the drink tray is to throw them away, but McDonald’s Canada is hoping you’ll hang onto them a bit longer.

Through a partnership with the University of Waterloo’s Audio Research Group and industry design company Stacklab, McDonald’s Canada is turning their cardboard drink trays into portable speakers for your smartphone. Unfortunately this appears to be a very limited release and will only be available on the 28th of July at Toronto’s Woodbine Beach where it will be available in limited quantities.

Now the beauty of these speakers, dubbed the McDonald’s Boombox, is that there are no electronics involved. Instead what happens is that it takes the sound coming from your smartphone’s speakers and increases them by amping up the sound pressure levels via the cardboard speaker enclosure.

Granted you won’t be getting the same treble/bass response that you might get from actual speakers, but it’s a quick and easy way to bump up the volume, and it costs pretty much next to nothing. So if you do live in Toronto, Canada, perhaps you’ll want to head down to Woodbine Beach this Friday to check it out.

Foxconn Announces Plans To Launch Manufacturing Plant In Wisconsin

According to the reports, Foxconn has been mulling the idea of potentially expanding its operations in the US. In fact a rumor earlier this week suggested that their plans could be announced this week itself, and sure enough that’s exactly what happened as Foxconn has revealed their plans to open a manufacturing plant in Wisconsin.

This plan was confirmed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker who revealed that the company will be investing as much as $10 billion to build a new facility that will be making LCD panels, which is in line with the earlier report that suggested that one of Foxconn’s operations in the US would be to make LCD panels for television sets.

Foxconn states that this new plant will create 3,000 jobs with the potential that it could generate as many as 13,000. It is also expected that this plant will be completed by 2020. It is unclear if Foxconn’s manufacturing facility in Wisconsin has to do with Apple, given how closely both companies have been working together for many years now.

This week President Donald Trump had stated that Apple had apparently promised that they would be building three “big, big, big” plants in the US. Apple has declined to comment on Trump’s statement so like we said, it is unclear if Foxconn’s expansion is part of that, or if it is something that Foxconn is doing independently.

Walmart SNES Classic preorders will all be cancelled

Earlier this week we reported that customers who had preordered the SNES Classic from Walmart were experiencing order cancellations. Though the company hadn’t said anything official about the issue, emails were going out to customers advising them of the cancellation, and customer service reps were giving explanations that basically amounted to ‘the website glitched.’ According to those representatives, the Walmart … Continue reading
