It was reported recently that the Apple TV has been bleeding market share in the US set-top box market to rivals from Amazon and Roku. The company is believed to be working on a new Apple TV that should breathe new life into its set-top box business. A new report reiterates the possibility. Apple is expected to launch a 4K Apple TV with HDR support later this year.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Apple is going to launch a new Apple TV after almost two years. The company’s set-top box will finally get support for 4K and HDR. Apple is also said to launch a new TV app to aggregate programming and provide users with live content based on the providers that offer them.
In order to take full advantage of the new Apple TV’s 4K and HDR capabilities, customers would obviously need to hook it up to a television that has support for both standards. The launch of this device may also finally bring 4K-resolution content to iTunes.
Apple hasn’t said anything as yet about a fifth-generation Apple TV. The company is expected to unveil the device this fall. It might be unveiled at the company’s September event which has traditionally been reserved for its new iPhones.
