Microsoft Talking To Sony About PlayStation-Xbox Crossplay

There are plenty of titles that enable Xbox gamers to crossplay with gamers on PC, and vice versa. However, crossplay between different platforms hasn’t been possible because Sony didn’t seem interested in it. Microsoft is open to the idea, though, of enabling Xbox and PlayStation gamers to play each other online. The company has now confirmed that it’s in talks with Sony for PlayStation-Xbox crossplay.

“We’re talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we’re talking to them and we’re hopeful that they’ll be supportive of it,” Aaron Greenberg, the head of marketing at Xbox, told Gamereactor.

Greenberg didn’t say anything about the nature of the talks and about the response that Microsoft has received from Sony so far. It’s too soon to say which titles will be the first to get crossplay support should Sony and Microsoft ever reach an arrangement that enables PlayStation and Xbox owners to play together online.

Sony hasn’t said anything about this as yet. It hasn’t even confirmed the talks with Microsoft so perhaps things aren’t so far along at this stage. Gamers will certainly appreciate having the ability to crossplay with gamers on other platforms.

Seems like the ball is in Sony’s court right now. What it chooses to do with it remains a mystery for now.

Purported iPhone 7s Logic Boards Leaked

Apple is due to unveil two new iPhones this year, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 7s. While there have been a significant amount of iPhone 8 leaks, the iPhone 7s has more or less been flying under the radar. It’s actually refreshing to see an iPhone 7s leak for a change. An image has surfaced online showing off the purported logic boards for this new device.

The logic boards have a design that’s similar to the logic board designs that Apple has used in previous iPhones so there might be some truth to this leak after all.

There’s nothing visibly linking this logic board with the iPhone 7s but the leak source mentions that the markings for where the processor will sit match the back of the A11 processor that’s supposedly going to power the iPhone 7s.

The iPhone 7s isn’t going to be a revolutionary update like the iPhone 8. It’s just going to be an iteration of the iPhone 7 with updated internals. That’s one major reason why it’s going to be cheaper than the flagship iPhone.

Reports have suggested that the iPhone 8’s availability will be limited at launch. It’s also claimed that there will be no supply issues for the iPhone 7s so customers should be able to easily get their hands on one once the device arrives.

Apple is yet to confirm when its iPhone event is going to take place this year.

We’ve heard a lot of rumors so far about the Huawei Mate 10. The company’s new flagship device will be unveiled in a couple of months. We’ve previously seen reports about its expected launch date and now the company itself has confirmed that. Huawei has confirmed on Twitter that it’s going to unveil the Huawei Mate 10 on October 16th.

The confirmation is accompanied by a teaser image that gives us our first glimpse of the Huawei Mate 10. It confirms that the handset is going to have a dual camera but that was to be expected. Huawei has been shipping handsets with dual camera systems for nearly two years now.

The company also takes a jab at its South Korean rival Samsung in the teaser. The render of the Huawei Mate 10 is accompanied by the words “beyond the galaxy.” It’s a subtle jab at Samsung which unveiled its first dual camera sporting handset, the Galaxy Note 8, just yesterday.

A lot has already been rumored about the Huawei Mate 10’s specifications. What’s known for sure is that the device is going to have flagship-level specifications and that it’s going to have a dual camera system.

More information will obviously be confirmed by the company itself come October 16th.

Apple Used Deep Learning To Fix Siri’s Robotic Voice, You Can Hear The Difference

Apple has been working to make Siri sound less like a robot and more like a human. As it gears up to launch iOS 11 to hundreds of millions of users across the globe, the company has released a white paper which details how it used deep learning to make Siri sound less robotic. The company has even included voice samples in the paper which let you hear the difference.

Several hours of high quality audio was captured so that it could be sliced to create voice responses. Developers also had to work had to get the prosody right, that’s the pattern of stress and intonation in a spoken language.

It’s not just about working this out. It’s about making it work on a mobile device because this level of processing can put a lot of stress on a device’s processor and thus hamper its performance.

Apple relied on machine learning to get around this. Enough training data allowed it to help the system understand just how segments of audio that pair well have to be selected in order to create responses that sound more natural.

Siri will sound much better with iOS 11. Apple has worked with a new female voice actor to record more than 20 hours of speed in US English. It generated between 1 and 2 million audio segments that were used to train the deep learning system. Apple mentions in the paper that test subjects liked the new Siri responses compared to the previous one.

Check out Apple’s white paper on the matter to hear just how different Siri sounds on iOS 11.
