DJI Spark Gets Mandatory Firmware Update, Won’t Fly Unless Updated

Given that drones are basically robots with fast-spinning rotary blades that can fly high up in the sky, clearly there are safety issues to be considered since you don’t want these drones to fall out of the sky and land on someone’s head. This is why we can’t say we’re surprised to learn of one of the measures DJI is taking to ensure drone safety.

The company has recently announced that they will be releasing a new firmware update for the DJI Spark which is meant to improve on the drone’s power supply during flight (presumably to prevent it from running out of juice mid-flight and fall out of the sky) as well as to integrate the Spark with the DJI Goggles. Sounds like a pretty standard firmware update, right? But it seems that this is a mandatory update because if users fail to update their drone, it won’t fly.

According to DJI, “If the firmware of either the aircraft or the battery is not updated by September 1, Spark will not be able to take off. DJI decided on the option of a mandatory firmware update in order to maximise flight safety and product reliability which we consider as top priorities.”

Of course this doesn’t mean that the drone is disabled permanently, but rather it won’t fly until you update it. So if you do own the Spark and you are prompted to update the firmware, you’d probably best go ahead if you plan to keep flying the drone.

NHS Mobile App Will Reward Users For Reaching Fitness Goals

There are some pretty obvious benefits when it comes to staying in shape. Of course not everyone has to work out to the point where they are sporting hulking muscles or six-packs or being able to do pushups with just one hand, but clearly working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is in itself its own reward.

However it seems that despite the benefits of being healthy, not everyone is so motivated to hit the gym or go for a job, but that’s something England’s National Health Service (NHS) is hoping to change. The organization has recently announced that those who use its health tracking app will be able to receive rewards in the future for meeting their fitness goals and/or staying active.

This comes in the form of discounts when shopping for fitness gear, gym memberships, and even stand a chance to redeem free cinema tickets, with the hope that these external motivations will inspire people to exercise more. Of course this isn’t done purely out of the goodness of their hearts, because by creating a more healthy population, the NHS is hoping to reduce the pressure being put on health services.

Whether or not this program will prove to be successful remains to be seen, but the NHS is expected to trial out this new scheme at Halton Lea, Cheshire.

Alleged iPhone 8 3D Camera Module Leaked In Photo

Apple’s iPhone 8 is expected to be huge in terms of new features, where users can expect to find a brand new design, a new OLED display, wireless charging, and we’re also hearing that it will sport augmented reality features and also a new security feature in the form of facial recognition that could potentially replace Touch ID (or move it to the back).

For augmented reality and facial recognition, we have heard the rumors that Apple will be relying on cameras with 3D capabilities, and now thanks to a photo posted onto Slashleaks (via 9to5Mac), the alleged 3D camera module has made its way online. Of course there’s no way to tell that this module belongs to the iPhone 8, or what kind of device it could be used for, so take it with a grain of salt.

However like we said, the rumors are suggesting that 3D cameras could be used for some of the new iPhone features, so if those rumors are true, then this particular component makes sense. A recent report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that Apple’s facial scanning tech is said to be years ahead of the competition, and that it will work in millionths of a second.

We’ve also heard reports that suggest the tech could work even when the phone is lying flat on the table, meaning that users won’t have to keep picking it up in order to unlock it.
