HomePod Setup Process Revealed In iOS 11 Beta Video

With Amazon and Google launching AI-powered smart speakers, it did not really come as a complete surprise to learn that Apple will be launching one of their own too featuring Siri. Dubbed HomePod, the speakers were unveiled at WWDC 2017 a few months ago, and a recently discovered video shows us how the setup process will work.

In a video uploaded by iOS developer Guilherme Rambo, this video is apparently extracted from the latest iOS 11 beta and shows us the setup process for pairing an iPhone with the HomePod. Based on what we are seeing, and assuming it is accurate, the process appears to be similar to the setup process for the AirPods with the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

According to Brazilian website iHelpBR, “When you turn on the sound box for the first time, iOS will ask the user if they want to perform the setup with that iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It will not be possible to set up a HomePod for Mac or Apple TV — although it is very likely that the device will work normally with them later.”

It seems that the overall setup process is pretty straightforward and fast, which we guess is one of the benefits (and selling points) of owning multiple Apple products. There is no specific date on when the HomePods will be launched, but it is expected to be later this year.

Nikon D850 Press Release Photos Leaked Ahead Of Announcement

The Nikon D850 exists and we know that because back in July, Nikon confirmed that they are working on it and that the camera is expected to be the successor to the Nikon D810 from a few years ago. However apart from that confirmation, things like specs and also photos of the camera have yet to be revealed, or at least until now.

The folks at Nikon Rumors have recently managed to get their hands on a bunch of photos that appear to be part of the press release that Nikon is expected to put out in the near future, meaning that this is as official as it gets. According to Nikon, the D850 will be a full-frame camera, but the company stopped short of actually sharing specs like megapixel count, shooting speeds, and so on.

However if the rumors are accurate, the D850 is said to sport a 45-46MP full-frame sensor and will apparently be borrowing certain features from the higher-end Nikon D5. In fact previous reports have gone as far as calling the D850 a “baby” version of the D5, so we guess if you wanted some of the D5’s features but didn’t want to spend the money, the D850 could be a good (and cheaper) alternative.

In any case with all these leaks we expect that an official announcement could be made soon, so do check back with us in the coming days/weeks for the details if there are any to be had.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III Could Be Announced Soon

If you’re looking for a camera that’s relatively compact but can take some pretty good photos, but also don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of lugging around and juggling multiple lenses like with mirrorless cameras, then Canon’s PowerShot G series of cameras have proven to be pretty good at getting the job done.

Now the last time we saw a PowerShot G camera was back in 2014 with the PowerShot G1 X Mark II which means that the camera is 3 years old now, and in the tech world 3 years is considered to be an eternity, especially with so many advancements being made in imaging technology. However the good news is that Canon could have a successor in the works in the form of the PowerShot G1 X Mark III.

The camera in question was spotted at the Bluetooth.org website where its name was put clearly on display. Unfortunately apart from its name, not much is known about the PowerShot G1 X Mark III right now, except that it will most likely be the successor to the Mark II, but things like specs, design, and features is really anyone’s guess at the moment.

However with the camera being listed, it has been speculated that an announcement could be made soon, although Canon has yet to officially confirm anything, but either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information in the future.

AccuWeather App Found Sharing Location Data Without Permission

The thing with weather apps is that it usually requires your location in order to determine what is the weather in your area. We know that sometimes you might be a little concerned about sharing your location all the time, so you might choose to enable/disable location services on your phone when you need them.

Unfortunately it seems that popular weather app AccuWeather has been recently accused of ignoring the choices made by users, and has actually been caught sharing the location data of users with a third-party data monetization firm even when users have switched off location services.

This was initially discovered by security researcher Will Strafach who intercepted traffic from an iPhone and its servers, and discovered that even when the app did not have explicit permission to access the device’s location, it instead sent WiFi router names and MAC addresses to the servers of a data monetization firm called Reveal Mobile every few hours.

Reveal Mobile’s CEO Brian Handley claims that the data is anonymized and aren’t tracking individual devices, and according to AccuWeather’s executive vice president of emerging platforms David Mitchell, “In the future, AccuWeather plans to use data through Reveal Mobile for audience segmentation and analysis, to build a greater audience understanding and create more contextually relevant and helpful experiences for users and for advertisers.”

Reveal Mobile has since published a statement in which they say that they follow all app store guidelines, such as honoring device and app level opt-out and permissions.

Delta Testing Out Video Chat With Customer Service Reps

When speaking with customer service, do you prefer chatting with them online via platforms like Facebook Messenger, or do you prefer calling? Or maybe there could be a third option which is going to a shop and talking to them face to face? For those who plan to fly Delta Airlines, you’ll be pleased to learn that the airlines will be testing out a new service.

The company has announced that they will be kicking off a pilot program in which customers will be able to video chat with Delta’s customer service reps at airports. These chats will allow customers to manage their flights, such as making changes to it and/or sharing feedback. According to Delta, this is a first for US airlines.

Charisse Evans, Vice President — Reservations Sales and Customer Care was quoted as saying, “More and more people are choosing video chat to connect in their everyday lives, so we wanted to bring that channel to Delta customers. We have the best specialists in the business — and now, they’ll be able to deliver customer solutions in an even more personal, face-to-face way.”

However like we said this is a pilot program which means that it has yet to fully roll out to all airports. As it stands it is currently only available at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and presumably if it goes well we should see the program start to expand to other parts of the country.
