Verizon's always-on throttling is an afront to customers and net neutrality
Posted in: Today's ChiliWell, it was nice while it lasted. Today, Verizon (the biggest carrier in the US) announced it was doing away with its simple and fair unlimited wireless data plan and complicating things by instead offering three plans. Two of those cost more, and a…
Like more than a few stories in my life, this is one of procrastination and regret. Yesterday’s total solar eclipse was the first to be viewable from the US in my lifetime, and my hometown of Lincolnville, South Carolina, was right in the path of tot…

Samsung has confirmed that it’s going to launch an updated version of its Notebook 9 laptop next month. The biggest change that it will make to this product will be under the hood. The new Notebook 9 from Samsung is going to be powered by Intel’s new 8th Generation Core processors that the company announced last week.
Intel claims that the 8th Generation Core processors deliver 40 percent more performance than the existing 7th Generation processors. This means that the new Notebook 9 is going to provide more performance compared to the current model.
Configured with up to a Core i7 processor, the new Notebook 9 from Samsung may also have support for up to 32GB of RAM. The U series of its 8th Generation chips that will power portable devices like notebooks will have quadcore processors instead of dualcore for the very first time.
The new Notebook 9 is also going to come with the S Pen stylus. This means that the notebook is going to have touchscreen capability as well aside from having a convertible form factor that makes it ideal for media consumption as well.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet how much the new Notebook 9 is going to cost and when it’s going to be released. We’re likely to get that information next month when Samsung says it’s going to officially unveil the new machine.

Verizon Hits 1.07Gbps LTE Record
Posted in: Today's Chili
There no doubt that mobile data speeds will be significantly faster than they are today. Carriers and network equipment companies are working hard to provide gigabit-standard speeds for mobile devices. To that end, Verizon, Ericsson, and Qualcomm have made an announcement highlighting their latest achievement. They have been able to hit a new LTE wireless broadband speed record of 1.07 Gbps.
They were able to reach such high speeds by using only three 20MHz carriers of Frequency Division Duplex spectrum with separate transmit and receive frequencies.
Verizon, Ericcson, and Qualcomm were able to achieve this LTE speed record by using 12 simultaneous LTE streams which enable up to 20 percent increase in peak data rates and capacity with a similar improvement in the average speed.
“As technology leaders, Verizon continues to drive innovation for our customers. Today’s achievement shows once again that while Verizon deploys the most advanced technologies to our customers in the real world environment, we are always looking ahead to what customers will need tomorrow,” Verizon said in a statement.
Just because gigabit LTE speeds have been achieved in test environments doesn’t mean we can have access to them right away. Most users will have to make do with LTE speeds ranging from 100 to 300 Mbps right now, depending on their carrier’s performance in their area.
Moreover, smartphones with support for gigabit LTE aren’t really that common right now so it’s going to be a while before gigabit LTE becomes the new normal.

There have been countless reports over the past few months about Huawei’s new flagship smartphones. The company is due to launch the Huawei Mate 10 in the near future. While previous reports have suggested that this handset might have a bezel-less display like most flagships this year, a new report out of China claims that the standard model of the Huawei Mate 10 isn’t going to have a bezel-less design.
Huawei is expected to release two models of this handset, the standard Mate 10 and the high-end Mate 10 Pro. The latest report out of China claims that the Mate 10 Pro will be the only variant of Huawei’s new flagship smartphone to feature a bezel-less design.
It’s claimed that one of these new devices will have a design similar to the Mate 9 and will reposition the fingerprint scanner to the back. This will likely be the Mate 10 Pro. The other is said to have the fingerprint sensor on the front just like the Huawei P10. This is expected to be the standard Mate 10.
Granted, we don’t really know with unofficial reports until the company itself confirms the details. Huawei hasn’t said anything officially about the Mate 10 handsets so far and it’s unlikely to do so prior to the official event.
Reports suggest that Huawei is going to unveil the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro at an event on October 16th.
