FBI Reportedly Advising Companies To Ditch Kaspersky Apps

When it comes to security apps for the computer, there are various software suites out there that you can use, and Kaspersky is one of them. However in a report from CyberScoop, it seems that the FBI is advising companies in the private sector to ditch Kaspersky’s apps, claiming that the company’s apps is an “unacceptable threat to national security”.

It is unclear as to what sort of threats the company’s apps offer, but unsurprisingly the company has denied these allegations. In fact not too long ago, Kaspersky’s CEO Eugene Kaspersky even offered up the source code to its apps in a bid to clear their name, although it seems that this offering has fallen onto deaf ears since the FBI is apparently still pushing to get private companies to ditch the software.

In a statement made by Kaspersky, “The company doesn’t have inappropriate ties with any government, which is why no credible evidence has been presented publicly by anyone or any organization to back up the false allegations made against Kaspersky Lab. The only conclusion seems to be that Kaspersky Lab, a private company, is caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight, and it’s being treated unfairly, even though the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyber-espionage or offensive cyber efforts.”

This isn’t the first time that foreign tech companies have been accused of working against the US government. For example several years ago Chinese company Huawei was accused of manufacturing spy phones for the Chinese government.

Alleged iPhone 8 Display Component Leaked

By now and given how close we are to the iPhone 8 being announced, we more or less know what the phone is going to look like. The handset is rumored to sport a full screen bezel-less display with a weird notch on the top of the display which supposedly houses the earpiece, front camera, and a potential 3D scanning camera for facial recognition.

Now thanks to a photo that has been uploaded to Slashleaks (via MacRumors), the alleged display component for the iPhone 8 has been leaked and it seems to confirm what we know so far. As you can see in the image above, the display in question certainly looks like what we have been hearing about in the rumors and seeing in the leaked photos and renders to date.

The photo also shows off some of the internal components, like the flex cable and components for the Lightning connector, none of which appear to be too surprising. However what’s missing is any indication that there could be Touch ID embedded underneath the display, which once again seems to “confirm” that the iPhone 8 could drop the feature in favor of facial recognition.

Of course it’s hard to tell how authentic this photo is or whether the component in question actually belongs to the iPhone 8, so as is the case with leaks and rumors, do take it with a grain of salt for now. Apple has yet to officially confirm when the phone will be launched, but it is expected that it should take place in September, assuming Apple keeps to tradition.

AI Photo Filter Prisma Wants To Sell Its Tech To Other Companies

Photo editing apps are a dime a dozen, so when Prisma was launched, it’s safe to say that many were a bit skeptical about its capabilities and how it could differ from the competition, but it managed to prove itself through the use of AI in which the app cleverly learns how to apply filters properly to photos.

This is also why the app had required an internet connection as the algorithms were being run externally on another server. However fast forward to today and Prisma is definitely not as hot as it used to be, but the company has plans to expand beyond just being another photo editing app and according to a report from The Verge, they are hoping to sell their technology to other companies for use.

Speaking to The Verge, Prisma CEO and co-founder Alexey Moiseenkov said, “We see big opportunities in deep learning and communication. We feel that a lot of companies need expertise in this area. Even Google is buying companies for computer vision. We can help companies put machine vision in their app because we understand how to implement the technology.”

Now for those who use the app and are worried that this could mean the app is going away, Moiseenkov reassured that isn’t the case. He states that the app currently has about 5-10 million monthly active users that they do not plan to abandon, and instead the app will serve as a platform for the company’s experiments.

WhatsApp For Web Now Supports ‘Status’ Feature

When Instagram first introduced Stories, it seemed like a copy of Snapchat, but yet it went on to perform surprisingly well. Facebook then tried to apply that to the Facebook app and also WhatsApp, although admittedly neither of these platforms are seeing the same success as Instagram.

However for those who do enjoy the Status feature of WhatsApp, you’ll be pleased to learn that WhatsApp for the web now supports the feature as well. However it seems that this particular feature is limited to just the viewing of status, as opposed to uploading status updates to the web version of WhatsApp, which is a bit of a pity but perhaps that functionality could come at a later date.

Just like the mobile version, the status updates will stay live and active for 24 hours, after which they will disappear. Clicking on the icon will take users to a different window where all available statuses can be viewed. Whether or not you actually use this feature is another story, but at least the option is there for those who do.

Note that this seems to be only available for the web version of WhatsApp, so for those who use the desktop app it will probably come at a later date.

Essential’s Andy Rubin Wants To Use AI To Cure Smartphone Addiction

We’ve all seen it and there’s a good chance we’ve all done it too, where we’ve gone out with friends and instead of talking to them, we spend our time on our smartphones, taking photos and sharing them on social media, replying to likes and comments, and so on, which kind of defeats the point of going out with friends in the first place.

However Android’s creator and Essential’s Andy Rubin believes that the use of AI in the future could help curb smartphone addiction. In an interview with Bloomberg, Rubin was quoted as saying, “We all lived happy lives before we had always-on internet.” He also talks about the Essential smartphone and it being the first step of his plan, in which future Essential smartphones could run more powerful and complex algorithms and AI to help automate a lot of tasks that will help kick our addiction.

According to Rubin, “If I can get to the point where your phone is a virtual version of you, you can be off enjoying your life, having that dinner, without touching your phone, and you can trust your phone to do things on your behalf. I think I can solve part of the addictive behavior.” It is a rather interesting idea and approach, although we should note that the smartphone market is extremely competitive and not necessarily kind to newcomers.

We’ve seen quite a few smartphones that promised to change the way we use our devices, but none have really stuck, so whether or not Essential will be able to succeed where others have failed remains to be seen. In the meantime those who are interested can pre-order the handset from Sprint, Best Buy, and Essential.
