It has been rumored repeatedly this year that Nest, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, is going to release a cheaper version of its popular thermostat. Nest is also reportedly going to launch more smart products this year, including a smart doorbell and a home security system. While more information about the new products is yet to surface, a new leak reveals the possibility that the new Nest Thermostat could actually get a complete redesign.
Nest originally launched its thermostat back in 2011. Even though the connected device is in its third generation now, the design has largely remained the same.
The leak which suggests that the new Nest thermostat could get a complete redesign comes from @evleaks who has a good track record with these things. The leak shows that while the Nest Thermostat is going to retain its circular shape, it’s going to have a white ring and screen.
It’s already possible to buy a Nest Thermostat with a copper, black, white, or silver ring right now but the new thermostat seems to have received a full redesign. The glass display that has always been on the thermostat will likely be replaced by plastic.
No word as yet on when Nest is going to launch its new thermostat. Previous reports have suggested that the new Nest Thermostat is going to cost under $200.

Henrik Fisker’s new electric car company, Fisker, has teased its first all-electric luxury car called the EMotion on multiple occasions. It’s going to be a new luxury all-electric car that’s going to rival the Teslas of the world. Fisker himself has confirmed that the Fisker EMotion all-electric car is going to be launched next year at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
Fisker confirmed to TheStreet that the EMotion luxury electric car is going to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 which will take place in Las Vegas in January 2018.
The company previously confirmed that the starting price for the EMotion is going to be $129,000. It promises 400 miles of range on a single charge and may eventually offer Level 4 autonomous driving functionality as well.
Even though the car will be properly unveiled early next year, it’s also known that people who put money down for this car won’t actually be able to get their hands on one until 2019. Fisker already started taking pre-orders for the EMotion earlier this year.
Fisker still has to reveal a lot more information about the underlying technology and it’s likely going to do that at its CES 2018 event. The company may also talk more about its production strategy for the EMotion at the event.

It has only been five months since Mass Effect: Andromeda was released. It’s the fourth major release in this franchise so far and it was much awaited by fans of the Mass Effect franchise. BioWare has now confirmed that it’s not going to release any more single-player updates for the game. Mass Effect: Andromeda is not going to receive any updates for in-game story content as well from now on.
Some players are likely going to be concerned about some of the campaign’s loose narratives that have not been completely addressed by the single-player experience. BioWare is aware of that.
It says that the team decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. It will address the loose narrative threads of the campaign through its upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark.
BioWare’s announcement follows reports that it had canceled all future DLCs for Mass Effect: Andromeda. The final update for the game was released last month and it was just a bug-fixing update. That’s not to say that BioWare isn’t going to release any updates for the multiplayer experience.
It will release new content including character kits, missions, and more for the multiplayer experience. More details about this will be confirmed by BioWare’s multiplayer team in the coming weeks.

Chicago’s Board of Election Commissioners has said that personal information of almost 2 million registered voters in the city was exposed online publicly on an Amazon cloud server for an unknown period of time. The exposed personal information of the voters was compiled in a file that was discovered about a week ago by a researcher at a computer security firm.
Election officials were informed of the leak the following day and the file was taken down three hours after the officials were notified. The leak was reported to the public earlier this week.
It was a backup file that was stored on Amazon Web Services’ servers. The information in the file included voters’ social security numbers, names, addresses, and dates of birth. Driver’s license and state identification numbers of some voters were also included in the list.
Even though the file was stored on Amazon’s servers the leak isn’t Amazon’s fault. It only provides the cloud storage service and leaves the security configurations up to the user. By default, the cloud storage service is kept secure so someone within database manager and equipment contractor Election Systems & Software might have made the file public inadvertently.
Electronic Systems & Software has said that it’s reviewing its procedures and protocols to make sure that the data remains secure and that something like this doesn’t happen again in the future.

Amazon isn’t the only retailer that’s looking into drone delivery. Walmart appears to be working on a similar concept but its solution might be a bit different compared to Amazon’s. Walmart has filed for a US patent for a floating blimp warehouse which will make delivers via drones. The idea is to have a floating warehouse up in the sky from where Walmart can instantly ship products to customers using drones.
According to the patent filing, the blimp-style floating warehouse would fly at heights between 500 and 1,000 feet. It will have multiple launch bays for sending drone deliveries. The blimp itself will either fly autonomously or be remotely controlled by a human pilot.
This solution could help Walmart lower the cost of fulfilling online orders, cutting down on “last mile” costs to a customer’s house which is normally handled by a logistics company.
Having a floating warehouse in the sky will also help Walmart tackle the core challenge of traffic and driving distances in major cities thus drastically reducing delivery times for online orders.
It will also enable the company to serve a wider distribution area as traditional warehouses can only fill orders within a fixed driving distance. A floating warehouse can simply move over to one town and release a swarm of drones and fly on to the next town to make further deliveries.
Walmart has only applied for this patent now so it’s far from putting floating warehouses in the sky at this point in time. Who knows, it may do just that a few years down the line.
