Apple Watch Series 3 Reportedly Enters Into Final Testing Phase

Based on the rumors, it’s safe to say that Apple will be launching a new Apple Watch later this year which presumably is the Series 3. In a report by Chinese news outlet Economic Daily (via 9to5Mac), it seems that the Apple Watch Series 3 has entered into its final testing phase, meaning that it’s now one step closer to being launched.

The Apple Watch Series 3 is expected to be announced alongside the new iPhones in September. Apple has yet to send out any formal invitations to an event in September, but given the past iPhone launches, it’s safe to say that September is one of the more likely launch timeframes.

The report goes on to add that mass production is about to begin following successful testing, and that it is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2017. According to the previous rumors we’ve been hearing about, the Apple Watch Series 3 is expected to come with some new features, one of which is support for cellular connectivity.

This means that should Apple Watch owners choose to, they can purchase a data plan for their smartwatch and will not have to rely on their iPhones for connectivity. Apart from that, it is said that the Apple Watch Series 3 will also be retaining the same form factor that we’ve all grown accustomed to, so if you are thinking of buying it, know that you’ll be buying it mostly for its new features and not so much its design.

Shazam Finds Its Way Onto Samsung’s Smart TVs In Latest Update

If you’re trying to figure out a song that’s playing on radio or a TV show that’s being shown on the screen, Shazam is a pretty awesome tool that gets the job done. Of course this usually will rely on you using your smartphone, but it seems that if you own a Samsung Smart TV, Shazam will now be integrated into the operating system.

Samsung has announced that in its latest update to its Smart TVs that they will be adding Shazam integration. According to Samsung, “Shazam grants Smart TV viewers the ability to identify songs that are playing in TV shows or films easily and quickly. With a single click, users are able to access song titles, artists, lyrics and albums while watching content, whether it’s live TV or content delivered over HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface).”

Basically this should save users some time trying to reach their phone and launch the app, especially if their phones aren’t near them. Samsung also claims that this integration will allow users to use the remote for their Smart TVs to ask Shazam to identify song, which should be an even more efficient process. The update to the Smart TVs should already be rolling out so if you own a 2017 Smart TV from Samsung, you’ll want to keep an eye out for it.

Amazon To Start Paying More Developers Who Create Alexa Skills

One of the great things about Amazon’s Alexa is that it is open to third-party developers, which means that Amazon won’t have to work so hard to increase its functionality as this can be done by third-party developers, who have in the past come up with a variety of skills that Alexa can use, like hailing you an Uber, order a pizza, and so on.

Now it looks like Amazon wants to step things up a bit by encouraging more developers to come on board, or to encourage existing ones to create more skills because according to a report from TechCrunch, Amazon is apparently starting to pay more developers for creating Alexa skills that are popular.

This initiative is confirmed on Amazon’s website which reads, “Every month, developers can earn money for eligible skills that drive some of the highest customer engagement. We’ve expanded the eligible skill categories beyond Games, Trivia & Accessories to also include: Education & Reference; Food & Drink; Health & Fitness; Lifestyle; Music & Audio; and Productivity.”

Unfortunately there is no mention of the specifics like how much one can get paid, what kind of rates Amazon is using, or any kind of metrics for that matter. According to Amazon, payment is based on customer engagement, which once again seems rather vague as Amazon is basing this on various factors, so it seems that for now developers will just have to create skills and hope that they get chosen.

McDonald’s Australia Uses iPhone 8 Render For Its Promotion

Apple’s iPhone 8 has yet to be officially announced or revealed, although leaked schematics, drawings, photos, and renders have painted a pretty accurate picture, or at least a pretty consistent picture. In fact it seems that over in Australia, McDonald’s might have gotten ahead of itself and has used renders of the iPhone 8 in its latest promotion.

In a tweet by Benjamin Geskin, it seems that these are his renders that McDonald’s had used in their promotion of the McDonald’s app. While there’s no way of knowing if these renders are even accurate to begin with, we suppose it does give us a very early look at how apps might look like running on the iPhone 8, and how the notch in the middle of the display will work with app designs.

It has been previously suggested that because the notch effectively separates the battery indicator and signal bar that Apple could make it more “useful” and maybe even contextual depending on the app. The mockup by McDonald’s doesn’t really take advantage of that, so for now the notch in the screen is admittedly a bit of an eye-sore.

It is unclear if McDonald’s used it and thought it was the actual iPhone, or if they’re simply trying to create some buzz, which seems to have worked.

Google Working To Bring Project Treble To Existing Devices

One of the criticisms of the Android mobile operating system is that when it comes to releasing updates, it can be a bit slow unless you own a Nexus or Pixel handset. Google has tried to remedy this over the years with various initiatives, and earlier this year the company announced their latest efforts with Project Treble.

However the problem with Project Treble is that during the announcement, Google said that it would only be available on devices that ship with Android O onwards, with the exception being last year’s Pixel handsets, which means that there will be millions of Android users out there that will be missing out on this feature, or at least that was what we thought.

During a recent podcast in which several Google engineers were featured (via Android Police), it was revealed that Google is actually working on potentially bringing Project Treble onto existing and older Android devices as well. The engineers did not mention which companies that Google is working with and what devices we are looking at, but we suppose it’s still comforting to know that older Android devices might not necessarily be left behind.

However there is no guarantee that this will work out so maybe don’t hold your breath just yet.
