ASUS ZenFone 4, ZenFone 4 Pro Announced

At the end of July, ASUS confirmed that they would be holding an event in which they will officially announce their next flagship smartphone in the form of the ASUS ZenFone 4. For those who are curious about the handset, wonder no more as ASUS has officially taken the wraps off the phone during Computex 2017 in Taiwan.

ASUS has announced both the ZenFone 4 and the ZenFone 4 Pro, in which the ZenFone 4 appears to be something of a mid-range smartphone with some pretty impressive specs. We’re talking about 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a glass body, and a 12MP Sony IMX362 camera on the back of the phone with OIS and an f/1.8 lens.

However what makes this phone feel mid-range would be its choice of processor, where it will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and a 5.5-inch display. However if you were hankering for more power, that’s where the ZenFone 4 Pro comes in with its Snapdragon 835 chipset.

It is expected to share similar features to the ZenFone 4 save for its chipset and camera, where the cameras on the ZenFone 4 Pro are of the 2x optical zoom for one camera, and with an f/1.7 lens for the other camera. It is also expected to pack a larger 3,600mAh battery. Unfortunately ASUS did not mention when the ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 4 Pro will be made available or how much it will cost, but we’ll keep an eye out for more information.

Google Testing Search Lite App For Emerging Markets

Many of us tend to take our internet speeds and reliability for granted, and whenever our internet experiences a slight hiccup, we lose our minds. Unfortunately there are millions of people around the world who do not have access to stable internet, let alone fast internet, but that’s a problem Google is looking into.

No, we’re not talking about Project Loon that is meant to bring internet to far-flung places. Instead we’re talking about Google’s efforts at creating an app for search that is meant to be aimed at users who live in markets where internet is slow, bandwidth is little, and the connection is spotty. This comes in the form of an app called Search Lite.

It seems that users in Indonesia spotted Google advertising the app on Facebook, and clicking on the ad saw them being invited to take the app for a spin. It performs Google searches like normal, but like we said it is meant to be aimed at users who have little bandwidth or slow connections.

There’s no word on when the app will be released, but Google is definitely not the first to create such an app. In the past we have seen companies such as Facebook launch Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite.

Samsung Backs ‘Kiss’ Wireless Data Transfer Technology

If you want to transfer a file from your phone to another phone, or a phone to a computer, and so on, usually you’d use a cable. This has been the default method for data transfer over the years and while it works, we guess it’s not the most efficient, but that could soon change as companies such as Samsung has backed a technology by Keyssa called “Kiss”.

The idea behind Kiss is that it will help facilitate wireless data transfer, and we’re sure that some are wondering what is the difference between this feature and other features like Bluetooth, AirDrop, and so on. The idea is that it will be faster, much faster, where you could transfer HD movies within seconds, or as you can see in the video above, you could even instantly stream video from one device to the other without the need for cables at all.

Samsung isn’t alone in backing the technology as other tech companies such as Foxconn and Intel have also invested in the technology, along with some prominent figures in the tech industry like former Apple engineer and founder of Nest, Tony Fadell. The goal is to eliminate the need for cables and we suppose eventually ports.

This could lead to devices becoming even slimmer or thinner than before (which is one of the reasons why some companies have moved to USB-C), or using that extra space to add new features. We’re not sure when we’ll be seeing the Kiss technology debut, but it does sound pretty exciting.

Xbox One System Update Lets Users Filter Games By 4K, HDR, And Etc.

4K content is expected to be the standard of the future, or at least for the foreseeable future which is why companies like Microsoft and Sony are putting out consoles that will support the resolution. Now if you’re an Xbox gamer looking to take advantage of the Xbox One X’s capabilities and your 4K television, the latest Xbox system update might be of interest.

In a post on Reddit (via Eurogamer), Microsoft has recently issued a system update to the Xbox One in which gamers will now be able to filter games based on resolution and display. As you can see in the screenshot above, gamers can now choose to filter their games based on whether they are 4K ready or if they are HDR ready.

It’s not exactly a groundbreaking feature, but if you’re looking for games that can truly take advantage of your setup, then these filters could come in handy. Unfortunately it seems that for now, the update has only been rolled out to those in the Xbox One’s alpha test group, but we expect that it should eventually be made available to everyone else. The new filters are in addition to gamers being able to sort games based on platform, like Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox 360, and so on.

Google Search Lite in limited testing in some markets [APK Download]

One of Google’s key points at its I/O conference last May was making Android more accessible for emerging markets, especially those with phones with very constrained hardware. Part of that “Android Go” thrust is a suite of apps that are supposed to be smarter in making use of those limited resources while still offering the same core experience as their … Continue reading

ASUS goes dual-camera crazy for its ZenFone 4 series

Latest LG V30 Leak Leaves Nothing To The Imagination

In a couple of weeks, LG will be taking the wraps off their latest flagship smartphone in the form of the LG V30. The handset’s renders have been leaked countless times, and we’ve also seen real-life photos as well, but the latest leak from reliable leakster Evan Blass has revealed the phone in full, leaving pretty much nothing to the imagination.

Just like the previously leaked photos, renders, and rumors, the LG V30 will feature a bezel-less display. It also appears to be rather “tall” which is in line with the rumors that the LG V30 will adopt the LG G6’s display aspect ratio. The render also confirms that the phone will come with dual rear-facing cameras, which LG has recently confirmed will have an aperture of f/1.6, making it the widest aperture we’ve seen on a smartphone to date.

It also seems that LG will be keeping the fingerprint sensor of the phone on the back, which given the full screen display leaves no other place to put it. We have to say that the LG V30 looks pretty amazing and is very sleek. We do miss the fact that the phone will not have a secondary ticker display, but LG is expected to make up for it with a software version. In any case we should have all the details come 31st of August, so check back with us then for the official reveal.

Polaroid Unveils Its New Android Smartphones

If you grew up in the era of the film camera, there’s a good chance that the Polaroid brand might be familiar to you. What made Polaroid so different from other camera makers is that their cameras had the ability to print photos on the spot, whereas other cameras required the film to be developed specially.

While the concept of instant print cameras is still around today, the Polaroid brand has branched out and now produces other things apart from cameras, such as smartphones, and now the company is back with more Android offerings in the form of the Polaroid Cosmo K, Cosmo K Plus, and also a Polaroid Jet C7 tablet.

Neither of these devices are what you might consider high-end, for example the Cosmo K will feature a 5-inch display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and a 2,800mAh battery. The Cosmo K Plus as its name suggests is basically a larger version of the phone, with a 5.5-inch display, but the rest of the specs remain the same.

As for the Jet C7, this is a 7-inch tablet with a 1GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 2,650mAh battery, and 5MP cameras on the front and back. According to the company, none of these devices will be available in the US as they are currently only available in Mexico, so don’t expect to get your hands on them.

Nintendo Switch Owners In Japan Are Reporting Warped Consoles

The dock of the Nintendo Switch is meant to house the console when playing at home, recharging it (and the Joy-Cons), and also to let it hook up to a TV. With the dock performing so many functions, you would think that Nintendo would have designed it better, but ever since its launch we have heard reports of how the dock is scratching the display and also how it is warping the console.

However given that it has been a few months since the Switch was released, you would think that Nintendo would have tried to address the issue, like maybe change the material of the Switch to prevent it from warping, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Reports out of NeoGAF (via Kotaku), Twitter, and Reddit have owners in Japan who are reporting that their consoles are warping too.

For those unfamiliar with the issue, basically because of how the gap between the dock and console is so narrow, heat is unable to escape properly, which means that the console only gets hotter the more you use it, which in turn leads to it warping. We suppose at the moment the only fix would be to play it in a cold room or blast a fan towards it, or alternatively turn to the use of third-party docks which seems to have been designed much better.

Alleged iPhone 8 Wireless Charger Component Leaked

One of the popular iPhone 8 rumors is that the smartphone will introduce wireless charging to the iPhone lineup for the first time ever. At the moment it is unclear as to how Apple plans on implementing the feature, whether or not it’ll be something revolutionary or if we’ll be looking at a similar system to what’s being offered by Android handset makers.

While that remains to be seen, photos uploaded onto Weibo (via iClarified) allegedly show off components that are apparently that of the wireless charger that Apple will be selling to facilitate the iPhone 8’s wireless charging capabilities. It’s hard to tell based on the images alone, but it appears that they are circular in shape.

We’re not sure if this could result in a hockey puck-like wireless charger that we’ve seen other companies offer in the past, or if it could be part of a larger package. However these images do corroborate an earlier report that suggested that the iPhone 8 will require a separate accessory to charge wirelessly.

It has also been said that Apple will not be bundling the wireless charger together with the phone, and that customers are expected to purchase it themselves. In any case take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully the official details will be revealed next month.
