Update Bricks Smart Lock, Prevents Guests From Entering Airbnb Homes

A smart lock sounds like it would be a great idea. A lock that you can unlock using your phone, a lock that you can generate codes and give to guests like friends and family, it almost seems like smart locks are the way of the future, but recently a situation involving Airbnb homes and smart locks have hinted that maybe that future isn’t quite here yet.

In a report from TechCrunch, it seems that a small number of Airbnb guests/hosts were locked out of their homes due to a smart lock getting bricked following a bad update. The lock in question is made by Lockstate and is part of Airbnb’s Host Assist program, where it is a lock recommended by Airbnb because it lets hosts generate a one-time code that their guests can use for the duration of their stay.

However like we said, a bad update to the lock’s firmware ended up bricking the device and made it impossible to reconnect to the company’s servers, meaning that pushing an update to the lock to fix the problem would not be possible. Speaking to Threatpost, the company is asking customers to send their locks back to them for a replacement, and that they are offering them a year’s worth of free access to its portal service as part of their apology.

While it is true that any smart lock could have ended up being in Lockstate’s position, it does highlight some of the problems that comes with owning a smart lock, and that maybe at the end of the day, a good old fashioned lock and key might still be the best answer.

Google Pixel 2 Details Revealed In FCC Filing

There has been a bit of back and forth regarding who will be the one responsible for making the Google Pixel 2 handset. Some rumors are suggesting that HTC will continue to make the phones, while some have suggested LG. However thanks to a recent filing at the FCC by HTC, it seems that HTC will be the manufacturer, and some details have also been revealed.

According to the filing, for starters it seems like the Pixel 2 will be made by HTC, however given that Google is expected to launch two Pixel 2 handsets, perhaps we could be looking at Nexus 5X/6P situation where both phones are made by different companies, but for now it looks like HTC will be making at least one of them.

Also what’s interesting is that in the filing, there is mention of a feature called “Active Edge” which has been speculated to be similar to the squeezable frame feature in the HTC U11, except in this case it seems that squeezing the phone’s edges will launch Google Assistant, which is actually not a bad idea.

Other details include how the phone will most likely pack 64GB of storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, and it also appears to be running on Android 8.0.1. We reckon it probably won’t be too long until the details of the Pixel 2 are revealed, so check back with us in the near future for more updates.

Instagram Goes Conversational With Comment Threads

Instagram has long supported comments, but the problem with Instagram’s comments is that each comment is its own thread, meaning that unless you tag the person you’re replying to, it can sometimes get lost in the stream of comments, especially on popular photos, which is why Instagram is introducing comment threads.

As you can see in the screenshots above, comment threads are exactly what their name suggests, which is where users can reply to comments and create their own conversation, that way you know that certain comments are related to each other. This isn’t exactly a new feature as we have seen that done with platforms such as Facebook, but we guess it’s good to see it arrive for Instagram as well.

According to instagram, “Comment threads help you keep track of conversations and make it easy to respond to a specific thread. This update will make your feed an even better place to share interests, get inspired and connect with others. Now, when you hit reply underneath any comment, your response will automatically be grouped right underneath it in a thread.”

Instagram says that the feature should be rolled out globally in the coming weeks, so just make sure that you are using the latest version of Instagram on your iOS or Android device and you should be able to take advantage of it.

Allo For Web Is Officially Launched

Earlier today we reported that the Allo app for Android seemed to hint that Allo for web could be on its way, and it seems like users did not have to wait too long because Google’s Amit Fulay has announced via Twitter that Allo for web has been officially launched and that users who are interested can go ahead and get their hands on it.

However we should point out that Allo for web is currently only available for Android devices. While the feature is live, the Allo website is saying that this feature is only available for Android phones at the moment, with support for the iPhone coming soon. There was no mention of when exactly, but we guess iPhone owners will just have to wait.

It is unclear if this is due to technical issues or if Google simply wants to give Android users an exclusive feature at the start, but either way iPhone owners will have no choice but to remain patient. For Android users (and presumably iPhone users later), setting up Allo for the web appears to be pretty straightforward.

All you have to do is launch the Allo app on your Android device, go to the menu and select “Allo for web”, and scan the QR code displayed on the website where it will then sync your accounts. Once that’s done you should be good to go.

BioShock Remastered Will Be Coming To The Mac August 22

Back in 2016, BioShock: The Collection was officially announced, which for those unfamiliar is basically a remastering of old BioShock titles for the console. It was later brought over onto the PC, which had some wondering what about Mac gamers? The good news is that Mac users will be shown some love too later next week.

It has been confirmed that BioShock Remastered will be released onto the Mac on the 22nd of August. Note that this is not BioShock: The Collection which features several remastered BioShock games, but rather this seems to be a singular title. The game is priced at $19.99 which is pricier than the original games, but the original will remain in the Mac App Store for those who don’t think that the remastered graphics and enhancements are worth the price.

According to David Stephen, Managing Director of Feral Interactive, “We’re thrilled to bring an enhanced version of BioShock to macOS 10 years after its original release. The improved graphics make the most of the spectacular art direction, combining art deco design, science fiction themes, and a horror sensibility. There’s never been a better time to visit Rapture.”

That being said, we haven’t really heard much from the BioShock franchise ever since the game’s original developers shut down. However the franchise’s publisher 2K had previously reassured gamers that BioShock is here to stay, although what exactly is in store for the franchise in the future is unclear.
