DeLorean Aerospace DR-7 VTOL makes good on Doc Brown’s promise

One of the most iconic movies from the ’80s was “Back to the Future” and in that original film, just when we think all is well with McFly and his hottie, Doc Brown comes back in a much more futuristic DeLorean time machine and famously tells Marty that where they are going, they don’t need roads. DeLorean Aerospace has now … Continue reading

Apple Promises More Smart Connector Products Are Coming

Apple has typically relied on its Lightning port and connector for its accessories, but with the iPad Pro, Apple actually introduced a new method of connectivity in the form of the Smart Connector. However despite the introduction of the new connector, there aren’t many accessories available for it.

Sure there are Apple’s own lineup of accessories, and there are also some from third-party vendors, but it’s nowhere near as many as Lightning, but that is expected to change soon. In a report from Fast Company, it seems that the Cupertino company has confirmed that there are more Smart Connector accessories in the works from other companies, but exactly what they are remains to be seen.

One of the benefits of the Smart Connector over Lightning is that it doesn’t actually plug into the port itself, but rather it relies on contact between the connectors, which means that connecting devices and removing them will be relatively simple and straightforward, versus Lightning where you’d have to plug it in and out, which isn’t quite as efficient.

So far some accessories that uses it include the Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, as well as some options by Logitech, but in any case hopefully we’ll be able to see more such accessories being launched in the future.

Lyft Says There Will Always Be A Need For Human Drivers

Just like many other companies, Lyft has recently expressed their interest in self-driving cars, with plans to develop their own fleet in the future. Clearly with self-driving cars, the need for an actual human driver is no longer there, or is there? According to Lyft’s director of product, Taggart Matthiesen, there is.

Speaking in the latest episode of Recode Decode, Matthiesen stated that there will be pretty much always a need for human drivers. “Drivers have always been part of our family, they have been core to our service. As far as I’m concerned, they will continue to be that.” He claims that even if they’re not necessarily driving, they can help to provide other services.

For example, “If I need to go to the doctor’s office and my leg is in a cast and I can’t drive, we have a service for that. If you get into the world of autonomous, we may need someone in that vehicle to help that person. There are things we’re doing beyond getting a passenger from point A to point B, additional services that we as a company can look at.”

That being said, we expect that it will probably be a while before we start seeing autonomous cars become a mainstay on roads. The technology is still being worked on as we speak, not to mention there are also various regulations and laws that need to be addressed before it becomes road legal.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Launch Date Rumored For August 24

Samsung has recently confirmed that the Galaxy Note 8 handset will be officially announced on the 23rd of August, but the question is when will the phone be made available for purchase? Typically what we have seen most manufacturers do is that they usually take a couple of weeks to a month before releasing their products to the market.

However that might not be the case with the Note 8. In a report from Reddit, it seems that a Best Buy Mobile employee “confirmed” that the Note 8 will actually be launched on the 24th of August, which is pretty much the next day after the handset has been announced. It is also expected to be available via Verizon and Samsung on that date.

A Reddit moderator confirmed that the source is indeed a Best Buy Mobile employee, but whether or not the report is true remains to be seen. This is because we have recently heard rumors that the Note 8 will actually be released on the 15th of September, with pre-orders kicking off from the 1st of September.

That information is supposedly based on a leaked roadmap of Samsung’s launch plans for the device. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but we guess having the phone released so quickly can only be a good thing.

LG V30’s Floating Action Bar Shown Off In Screenshots

A popular rumor of the upcoming LG V30 is that it will be ditching the secondary display that made the company’s V-series so unique. Instead it was suggested that LG could turn to the use of software to mimic the effect, which LG themselves have confirmed will be the case and have shown it off in screenshots.

As you can see in the image above, the floating action bar will actually slide in from the side of the phone where it will allow users to launch certain apps or shortcuts. When not in use, it can then collapse back to the side, which honestly isn’t a bad idea since a software floating action bar will take up less screen real estate compared to an actual physical display.

However we suppose in the process, LG has killed off one of the main features of the LG V-series and introduced a new feature that could easily be replicated by apps and custom ROMs. That being said, the LG V30 is obviously more than just its action bar as the camera is said to sport an f/1.6 lens which should help with low-light photography.

The handset has been confirmed for a launch on the 31st of August which is in the next couple of weeks, so do check back with us then for the official details.

YouTube Testing Live Watch Counter

When you tune into a live stream, usually you get a counter that tells you how many people are tuned into the stream at the moment. However when it comes to pre-recorded videos, what you get is a counter telling you the total number of views that video has had to date, but YouTube could be changing that.

It has been spotted that YouTube is testing out a live watch counter, which means that as you watch a video, you will be able to see how many other people are watching the video at the same time as well. This could come in handy for creators who might be curious to see what’s the peak concurrent users, or if there might be a particular time that might have more users, and so on.

Alternatively given that YouTube recently rolled out an in-app messenger, perhaps the live watch counter could in the future facilitate some kind of group chat experience where users can chat together as they watch the video. This feature is already offered for live videos, so we guess offering it to pre-recorded videos might not be a stretch of the imagination.

However like we said, the feature seems to be in testing at the moment so it is unclear when it will be rolled out fully if at all, so do check back with us later for more updates.
