Google Now Does Voice-To-Text Dictation In 119 Languages

Google’s speech recognition technology has long enabled users to rely on its voice-to-text recognition feature. The feature now supports 30 additional languages. Google announced today that it’s bringing voice typing to 30 more languages across the globe, covering more than a billion people. The latest update brings up the total number of supported languages to 119.

Google’s speech recognition technology can be found in Gboard on Android, Voice Search, and more. Users in the United States can also use voice dictation to express themselves in emoji.

In order to honor languages across the globe, speech recognition now even supports ancient languages such as Georgian that has alphabet dating back to the 10th century. Swahili and Amharic, the two most popular languages spoken in Africa, to the list as well. Many Indian languages have been added to the list too.

The full list of the newly supported languages can be found on Google’s website. It includes Armenian, Azerbaijani, Kannada, Khmer, Latvian, Nepali, and Urdu.

Google incorporated the 30 new language varieties by working with native speakers to collect speech samples. The process trained its machine learning models to understand the sounds and words of the new languages and improve their accuracy over time.

All of these new languages will soon be available across other Google apps and products, including the Translate app.

High Surface Book Return Rates Seen In Leaked Microsoft Memo

Consumer Reports pulled its recommended rating for Microsoft’s Surface hardware products last week, citing reliability issues. Microsoft disagrees with the downgrade and is reportedly readying a marketing push to present its side of the story to the customers. According to a new report, an internal Microsoft memo has been leaked which shows that the company initially saw high return rates for the Surface Book.

According to the report on Thurrott.com, the internal memo details Microsoft’s response to Consumer Reports. The memo shows that the high return rates for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book probably impact Consumer Reports’ findings.

Consumer Reports had surveyed more than 90,000 Surface tablet and laptop owners and found that almost 25 percent of Surface users faced issues by the end of their second year of ownership.

The chart included in that memo shows that return rates for the Microsoft Surface Book were as high as 17 percent during its launch period. They remained over 10 percent for six months after launch. Surface Pro 4 return rates reached as high as 16 percent during launch and later came down to 11 percent. They have remained around 6 percent throughout the product’s lifetime.

Microsoft has been selling the Surface Book for nearly two years now. Throughout the entire time that it has been available, the Surface Book has seen higher return rates than any other product in the Surface lineup.

Microsoft also mentions in the memo that all of the issues that might have caused higher returns have been fixed and thus returns have decreased over the past 12 months.

The company is planning to share “a comprehensive set of data that reflects the strength of our quality and our customer sentiment” with marketing teams and retail/sales personnel to get the word out.

Opera Max VPN App Discontinued

Opera released its Opera Max VPN app back in 2014. The app was meant to help users reduce their data use on mobile. The app used to compress data before it reached the device so that users saved data when they streamed a video or browsed websites. It became very useful for those who were on plans with monthly data limits. Opera has now decided to discontinue Opera Max.

The company announced today that it has decided to discontinue Opera Max because the app had a “substantially different value proposition” than its browser products. It represented a different focus for Opera, one that the company doesn’t seem to be willing to pursue now.

Opera says that it’s going to focus on its browsers and other upcoming services instead of spending time and resources maintaining Opera Max.

As a consequence of this decision, no further upgrades for the Opera Max app will be released moving forward. The app has also been pulled from the Google Play Store so it can no longer be downloaded from there.

Opera does say that it’s going to keep the Opera Max service up and running for its existing users “for a period of time.” It will inform those users about the termination of server-side support in due time.

Facebook Releases Trending News Section On Mobile

Continuing with its mission to become the go-to online destination for people who not only want to see what’s up with their friends and family but what’s up in the world as well, Facebook today started rolling out a new Trending News section on mobile. The Trending News section gets its very own link in the mobile app’s main navigation. The new section is being rolled out to users in the United States on both iOS and Android.

This latest move is part of Facebook’s redesign of its Trending Topics section. As the name suggests, this section highlights news stories that are getting significant traction on the world’s largest social network.

The redesign makes it easier for users to see how other publications are covering a particular topic. It also shows what a user’s friends and the public figures that they follow are saying about that matter.

The publications that feature in this section are sorted by engagement around the article and the publisher in general on Facebook. The social network’s algorithm also weighs what other articles are linking to that particular article.

The redesign is rolling out to users on iPhone and Android in the U.S. starting today. The navigational link for Trending News was released for iPhone users over the past few weeks. Facebook is testing it on Android currently and will roll it out for users on that platform in the near future.
