Facebook Has Secretly Been Testing An App In China

Facebook connects billions of people across the globe but it has so far not been able to gain any ground in the world’s most populated country. China has banned Facebook since 2009 go so the social network has no official presence in the country that counts more than a billion people as its citizens. This doesn’t mean that the social network sits around and does nothing. According to a new report, Facebook has secretly been testing a new app in China.

The New York Times reports that Facebook has released a photo sharing app in China called Colorful Balloons. As far as the app’s features are concerned, it’s quite similar to Facebook’s own Moments app in that respect but doesn’t carry any of the branding that would give away that it’s a Facebook app.

In its response to the Times’ report, Facebook doesn’t confirm or deny that it’s involved in this test. “We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Zhang Jingmei is believed to have developed this app and has reportedly attended at least one important meeting between Facebook and officials in China. There’s a possibility that she might be in an advisory position at Facebook or perhaps even an employee.

It’s unclear if the regulators in China are aware of this, if they weren’t and Facebook has indeed been secretly testing an app to see how internet users in China share content, that’s going to lead to some tough discussions the next time officials from both sides meet.

World’s Best Dota 2 Players Beaten By Artificial Intelligence Bot

You’ve seen artificial intelligence beat the world’s best Go players and now an AI-powered bot has beaten the world’s best Dota 2 players. During Valve’s yearly Dota 2 tournament there was a surprise segment which introduced the AI-powered bot from OpenAI, an artificial intelligence startup backed by Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk.

OpenAI engineers say that the bot learned fast enough in two weeks to beat the world’s best Dota 2 players. In this training period, the engineers say their bot amassed “lifetimes” of experience.

Musk obviously talked about this achievement on twitter. Pointing out that the OpenAI bot is the first ever to defeat the world’s best players in competitive eSports, he also mentioned that Dota 2 is “vastly more complex” than traditional board games like Chess and Go.

The demonstration was limited to a few variables of gameplay, nevertheless, the crowd was excited to see Dota 2 professional Danylo “Dendi” Ishutin being beaten badly by the bot in the live 1-vs-1 match.

Ishutin lost twice matches in succession to the bot and forgeited future matches to it. He was a bit surprised to see that the bot could perform at a level comparable to that of a human. He said that the bot “feels a little like human, but a little like something else.”

OpenAI engineers now want to work on expanding the bot’s capabilities so that it can compete across the entire game in a 5-vs-5 match by next year.

Microsoft Delays New New Xbox Wireless Adapter To 2018

It has only been a week since Microsoft announced its new Xbox Wireless Adapter. It’s a USB stick that enables Windows 10 PC owners to hook up an Xbox One controller with their PC for easier gaming. The new adapter is smaller and more robust than its predecessor. Microsoft was supposed to release it shortly but the company has now said that it’s delaying the new Xbox Wireless Adapter to next year.

When the new adapter was officially confirmed, it was due to be released on August 8th. It would have become available for purchase through Microsoft’s online store then but that’s not what happened on August 8th.

The listing has been updated on the Microsoft Store to reflect that the new Xbox Wireless Adapter is “not available.” The new release date that’s mentioned for it states January 31st, 2018 as the date when it’s going to be available.

What this means is that customers who were looking forward to picking one up will now have to wait for a good six months before they can get their hands on the new Xbox Wireless Adapter. Microsoft has confirmed to Windows Central that this change is correct and that customers in the United States will only be able to purchase the new adapter in the new year.

It’s going to be different for customers in other markets as the adapter will be available for customers in Japan later this month while customers in Australia and New Zealand will get it next month.
