Smartphones these days have gotten us spoiled, and it’s not just from their convenience. The ubiquitous Corning Gorilla Glass, which is used on all but the cheapest smartphones, has made us come to expect that our premium, and usually expensive, smartphones won’t scratch so easily. So when Motorola put out its latest shatterproof model, the Moto Z2 Force, many were … Continue reading
We made it, people. This morning we’re covering the baby monitor trying to be a doula, the silent 10-minute song rocketing up the iTunes chart and LG’s latest effort to make the best smartphone camera.
Given what a disaster the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was for the company last year, what with the batteries exploding and causing fires, we’re sure that many tech companies are now being extra cautious when it comes to trying to avoid similar incidents with their products. In fact NVIDIA appears to be taking such steps.
The company has recently announced that they are voluntarily recalling the European wall adapters that are being used for the SHIELD Tablet and TV devices. According to the company, “NVIDIA has determined that the two-prong European plug head – or “duck head” – may break, posing a risk of electrical shock. The recall is limited to the European plug head and does not affect any other NVIDIA products.”
The good news is that it appears that so far nothing bad or untowards has happened to NVIDIA users, so perhaps NVIDIA caught this early before anything did. Note that this only applies to the European wall adapter which means that those living in other parts of the world that uses a different adapter, you guys are safe.
For those who are unsure, you can head on over to NVIDIA’s website to see if your adapter is the affected unit, and how to go about sending it back to NVIDIA for a replacement unit.

Many of you guys might be familiar with the workplace chat app Slack, which is used by companies to communicate with each other. However when it comes to gaming, Discord can be thought of as the Slack but for gaming, and recently the company has announced that they will be testing out a couple of new features.
These features come in the form of video chats and screen sharing. This means that just like Skype and other messaging platforms, you will be able to use Discord to conduct video calls with your team members or individuals (although right now video calls are limited to just one-on-one).
As for screen sharing, we guess this is pretty straightforward as it lets users share their screens with others, which might be handy if you want to watch them game, or if you want to talk strategy for raids and team battles with the use of visual aids. However these features are currently undergoing testing and are only available to 5% of Discord’s users.
According to Discord, the reason for the testing is to try and determine how much bandwidth is needed to ensure smooth usage of said features. The team is hoping to have it ready in a month, but depending on how well the testing goes it could take longer. We’re not sure how one is selected to be part of the 5%, so if you don’t see it available to you then we guess you did not make the cut.

Recently Consumer Reports announced that due to stability issues, they were no longer able to recommend Microsoft’s Surface series of tablets and laptops. Unsurprisingly Microsoft didn’t take too kindly to the report and in a blog post penned by Panos Panay, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Devices, he iterated that the company is standing by its products.
According to Panay, “While we respect Consumer Reports, we disagree with their findings. Surface has had quite a journey over the last few years, and we’ve learned a lot. In the Surface team we track quality constantly, using metrics that include failure and return rates – both our predicted 1-2-year failure and actual return rates for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are significantly lower than 25%.”
He also cites how customer satisfaction surveys have indicated that 98% of Surface Pro 4 owners and Surface Book owners are satisfied with their devices, and that the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro are still receiving “rave reviews”. For those hearing about this for the first time, Consumer Reports is claiming that the Surface series of devices are not stable, and that 25% of Surface owners were likely to face problems by the end of the second year of owning them.
That being said, this isn’t the first time that Consumer Reports has changed their mind when it comes to recommending a product, like they did last year for Apple’s MacBook Pros, but they did change their minds later, so perhaps it could be the same for Microsoft as well.

The Nintendo Switch is pretty unique as far as consoles go, and even as far as handhelds are concerned if you were to classify it as one. This is because of the way the console has been designed where it can double up as a home console, or taken on the go, thanks to its detachable controllers.
However it seems that the Switch’s Joy-Cons have recently landed the company in some hot legal water. In a lawsuit filed by accessory maker Gamevice, the company claims that Nintendo has allegedly violated a patent for the concepts used in its Wikipad Android gaming device, namely the Joy-Cons where Gamevice feels like it is too close to their concept.
Unsurprisingly it looks like Gamevice wants Nintendo to stop selling the Switch, a ban on the sales, and also they are seeking unspecified damages. Neither Gamevice nor Nintendo has commented on the lawsuit so it is unclear as to what how Nintendo plans on proceeding, but presumably they will be defending themselves and the Switch.
The Nintendo Switch has definitely turned things around for the company especially following the flop that was the Wii U. The company has moved quite a few units so far and the console has received quite a fair bit of favorable reviews since.
