Microsoft Surface PCs No Longer Recommended By Consumer Reports

The non-profit publication Consumer Reports has pulled its “recommended” rating from Microsoft’s entire lineup of Surface PCs over reliability concerns. It says that the breakage rate for Surface devices is significantly worse than for similar products from other manufacturers. This is why Consumer Reports has decided to remove its recommended designation for Surface laptops and tablets.

Consumer Reports surveyed 90,000 tablet and laptop owners and found that an estimated 25 percent of Surface owners were likely to face “problems by the end of the second year of ownership.”

Issues reported with Surface devices included freezing, unexpected shut downs, issues with their touchscreens, and more. Microsoft was found to be a statistical outlier when compared to other brands as far as product reliability is concerned.

The study’s results show that the Surface products don’t have high reliability. Jerry Beilinson, the electronics editor at Consumer Reports, advises that “If you are very concerned about how long your products are going to last, it might be better for you to go with a brand that has a higher predicted reliability.”

Microsoft doesn’t agree with Consumer Reports, but that doesn’t surprise anyone. The company says that its return and support rates are significantly different from the study conducted by the consumer goods testing publication.

“We don’t believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners’ true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation,” Microsoft has said in a statement.

Uber Launches In-App Chat Functionality

Uber has decided to simplify the pickup experience for riders and drivers so it has added a much-needed feature to its app. Previously, riders either received a text from an unknown number which was usually their driver or the driver ended up honking like crazy outside the pickup location. There will be no need to do or bear any of that now because Uber has added an in-app messaging feature to its app.

Riders can text their en route driver by going to the Uber feed and tapping on “contact” followed by “chat.” Chats received by the driver will be read aloud to them so as to minimize distraction when they’re behind the wheel.

Drivers can easily acknowledge that they have received the message by tapping on the app once to send a “thumbs up.” Read and delivery receipts are baked into the feature so riders and drivers will know when their messages have been seen by the other party.

This feature also means that drivers and riders no longer have to share their phone number with one another. They can simply get in touch if need be using the built-in messaging functionality inside the Uber app.

Uber will be rolling out in-app messaging to both riders and drivers globally over the coming weeks.

Vertu Auctioning Off Its Back Catalog Of Phones

Vertu has long been a manufacturer of luxury phones. The phones didn’t really push the boundaries of technology. They used to have decent specifications but were made out of outrageously expensive materials and hence were some of the most expensive handsets ever made. Things haven’t been going so well for Vertu and it shut down its manufacturing operations in the UK last month. The company is now auctioning off its back catalog of phones.

The entire collection of 105 phones is listed on Bid Spotter. These devices from the Vertu museum feature models dating as far back as 2002. Many of the handsets are finished in expensive materials like 18-karat gold and titanium. Some are set with diamonds.

As you’d expect, they are not cheap. Bidding starts at $26,000. G J Wisdom & Co, the auctioneer, points out that some of the models in this lineup are concepts so they are not operational.

If you’ve always liked Vertu phones and have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket, perhaps you’d like to take part in this auction.

Given that some of the models in this collection used to cost up to $30,000 a piece back in the day, an entire collection of 105 Vertu phones for $26,000 almost sounds like a steal.
