LG V30 camera to have f/1.6 aperture, crystal clear lens

Ever since the LG V10 and perhaps even before that, LG has always prided itself for offering multimedia creators some of the best tools they can fit in their pockets. And while it’s arguable that LG has been able to deliver on those promises to a certain degree, it has easily been overshadowed by Samsung, Google, and now even HTC. … Continue reading

Man Arrested For Rape After Being Identified On Snapchat

snapchat uploadThanks to the power of social media, it seems that a man from Marblehead, Ohio has been arrested on charges of rape after a video of the assault was uploaded onto Snapchat by the victim. According to a report from the Toledo Blade, police have arrested 77-year old James Allen after they reviewed evidence from the Snapchat post.

The report claims that the police arrived at 1AM for a welfare check on a 20-year old woman. They interviewed both the woman and Allen and found that there were no problems. However at 3:45AM, a resident all the way in Texas alerted police claiming that he saw a video on Snapchat which showed a woman being sexually assaulted, and after reviewing the video, the man identified in the video was none other than Allen.

While it is unclear when the sexual assault took place, Ottawa County Prosecutor James VanEerten said that it appears to have taken place between the two calls. He is also unclear why the video was recorded and uploaded, but perhaps it could have been done so as to generate evidence and to keep a record, which presumably will come in handy during Allen’s trial.

He also added, “It’s obviously horrific, but at least it allowed us to put a stop to the situation and make a quick arrest in this case.” He is also urging those who have received the video to delete it. The 20-year old victim has been evaluated at Firelands Regional Medical Center, while Allen is incarcerated in the county jail with a bond set at $1 million.

Facebook Uses AI To Detect Fake Ads

Have you ever clicked on an ad for a particular product only to be given the round around and taken to somewhere else entirely? We’re sure that this is something many of us have experienced, and it is also something that Facebook wants to cut down on, at least as far as ads on its platform are concerned.

The company has recently announced that they will be clamping down on cloaked ads, which are basically ads that are presented a certain way to get approved for display on Facebook, but when clicked takes users to a completely different website or product, and to do so Facebook will be relying on AI to help identify such ads.

According to Facebook, “We are utilizing artificial intelligence and have expanded our human review processes to help us identify, capture, and verify cloaking. We can now better observe differences in the type of content served to people using our apps compared to our own internal systems. In the past few months these new steps have resulted in us taking down thousands of these offenders and disrupting their economic incentives for misleading people.”

Facebook isn’t the only company looking to improve how ads are being displayed on the web. Google is also doing their part in reaching out to publishers to let them know if their ads are annoying, and will also be blocking ads in Chrome that do not meet a certain standard.

Marvel & Star Wars Could Be Separate From Disney’s Streaming Service

Just the other day Disney announced that they will be ending their licensing deal with Netflix, which means that starting from 2019 onwards, Disney’s newer shows and movies will no longer be available on Netflix as the company will be launching their own streaming platform, which is quite a huge move for Disney and also quite a bit of a loss for Netflix.

Now Disney isn’t just all about cartoons as the company also owns Marvel and Star Wars, and so it was largely assumed that the streaming service could include shows from those universes as well. However that might not necessarily be the case, according to a report from TechCrunch in which they quote Disney’s CEO Bob Iger as suggesting that Marvel and Star Wars could get streaming services of their own.

According to Iger, “We’re mindful of the volume of product that would go into those services, and we want to be careful about that.” However nothing has been set in stone yet as Disney’s streaming service is only set to launch in 2019, so right now it is still being discussed, although we’re not sure if there is enough content from Marvel or Star Wars to warrant a standalone streaming service. Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime Iger stated that Disney has no plans to pull Marvel’s TV shows from Netflix.

Production On Apple’s 2017 iPhones Have Reportedly Begun

If Apple were to keep to their schedule of announcing their new iPhones in September and making them available a couple of weeks later, it means that production of the devices should have already begun, which is what a report from DigiTimes seems to suggest as they claim that production on the new iPhones has already begun ramping up.

According to their industry sources, “All of the three new iPhone models, including two TFT LCD and one OLED model, have entered volume production, said the sources, adding that there will not be shortages for the two LCD models, but the supply of the OLED version could fall short of demand due to high expectations for the model.”

This report seems to be in line with what we’ve been hearing so far, which is that while the iPhone 8 will not be delayed in terms of its launch, it is expected to be short in supply namely due to its use of OLED screens which are apparently having quite a high rate of failures when it comes to manufacturing.

We have also heard reports that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that mass production of the iPhone 8 is expected to kick off mid-September, which could also contribute to the shortage as there might not be enough units at launch.

Facebook Launches ‘Watch’, A New Platform To Watch Shows On

We know that Facebook, just like Apple, is looking to get into producing original video content, or at least hosting it on its platform, which is why the announcement of the Facebook Watch platform doesn’t really come as a surprise as it seems to be in line with what Facebook has been trying to achieve recently.

According to Facebook, “We’re introducing Watch, a new platform for shows on Facebook. Watch will be available on mobile, on desktop and laptop, and in our TV apps. Shows are made up of episodes — live or recorded — and follow a theme or storyline. To help you keep up with the shows you follow, Watch has a Watchlist so you never miss out on the latest episodes.”

As usual Watch will be catered to your tastes and preferences and is personalized so that you will be able to discover new shows and content based on what you like. What makes Watch particularly interesting is the fact that it will incorporate features from Facebook Live, which is reactions, meaning that as you watch a video, you’ll be able to see how other Facebook users have reacted to certain parts of it.

Unfortunately as it stands, Watch will only be available in the US, but even then its availability will be limited at the start. However Facebook expects that eventually they will expand it to more users in the future.
