Alleged Foxconn Photo Hints At iPhone With Rear-Facing Touch ID

At this stage in the game, you might think that the rumor mill would have already somewhat settled when it comes to “deciding” what the iPhone 8 could look like or what kind of features it could have. However a recent photo posted onto Chinese website Feng (via Cult of Mac) is throwing us for a loop.

In the photo above which was allegedly taken at Foxconn, it seems to suggest that Apple’s iPhone 8 could be packing a rear-facing Touch ID scanner. This is actually not the first time that a rear-facing Touch ID scanner has been brought up, but recent reports, rumors, and leaks have all suggested that won’t be the case, but then again since nothing can be confirmed, it’s hard to say who is right.

According to recent rumors, Apple has apparently given up trying to embed Touch ID into the display of the iPhone 8. It is unclear what that is, but the word on the street is that Apple could instead turn to the use of facial recognition as its new method of biometric security. However the question is whether or not the feature is reliable, especially when you consider that facial recognition systems in the past have been easily beaten by using photos.

However Apple’s facial recognition system is supposed to be more robust and can apparently be used even if the phone is lying flat, as opposed to having to raise it to the user’s face whenever they want to unlock it.

Facebook Will Be Shutting Down Its Groups App September 1

Facebook is a company that likes to experiment with various apps and services. We’ve seen the company launch various apps in the past, some of which have worked out great, such as Facebook Messenger, while some have flopped rather badly leading Facebook to shut some of them down, with the latest “victim” being the Groups app.

For those unfamiliar with the app, basically the Groups app seemed to serve the same purpose as Messenger, except that it was dedicated to Facebook Groups. Presumably the idea is that for users who spend a lot of time on Facebook Groups, a dedicated app would allow them to interact with Groups without the distractions from the main app.

In theory it wasn’t the most terrible idea, but we guess not many people saw the need for a dedicated app, which might explain why Facebook would rather devote their time and resources somewhere else. According to Facebook, this doesn’t mean that Groups will be going away, but rather they’ll be spending their efforts at improving the feature within the main app itself.

So if you are one of the few who do use the Groups app, then note that you will have until the 1st of September after which the app will be shut down, so time to start getting used to Groups in the main Facebook app if that’s the case.

Researchers Use Machine Learning To Detect Depression On Instagram

The things you post on social media can sometimes say a lot about you as a person, and even your mental state, and this is something that researchers are looking to explore more of. In a recently published study in the EPJ Data Science (via Mashable), researchers used machine learning to try and detect signs of depression from Instagram accounts.

The system used a variety of factors to make its decision, such as choice of color, the filters used, face detection, user comments, and how much one is engaged in their posts. The research suggested that users who post bluer, darker, and grayer images tended to be more depressed, and were also less likely to use Instagram’s filter, or if they did, would choose the black-and-white Inkwell filter.

In contrast, those who did not show signs of depression tend to use filters such as Valencia, which seems to be in line with a research from last year that also explored how photos posted onto social media could be used to detect depression in a person. However it has been pointed out that there is a caveat with this study, and that is it has a very small sample size and lack of demographic information.

This means that while there appears to be some correlation, there isn’t quite enough to go on just yet, but it could be the start of something. According to Chris Danforth, co-author of the study and Flint Professor of Mathematical, Natural, and Technical Sciences at the University of Vermont, “Doctors don’t have visibility into our lives the way our mobile phone does. It knows a lot more about us than we know about ourselves.”

HBO Hackers Are Demanding Millions In Bitcoin

As you might have heard, HBO was recently hacked and with the hack, quite a ton of data was stolen in the process. To prove that the hack was successful, the hackers then released quite a bit of material, one of which was a Game of Thrones script. However that’s not all the hackers have managed to get their hands on.

In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that the hackers have since released a fresh treasure trove of data, except this time the leak contains emails from a HBO executive. The hackers have also sent a message to HBO CEO Richard Plepler which reads, “We successfully breached into your huge network. … HBO was one of our difficult targets to deal with but we succeeded (it took about 6 months).”

The hackers have also since demanded that HBO pay them a ransom to prevent additional content from being released. The amount the hackers are asking for is 6 months worth of salary in bitcoin, which they have implied is worth around $6 million. HBO had previously confirmed that they have experienced a “cyber incident” and are working with the authorities and cybersecurity firms.

However given that the data has been stolen, we’re not sure what HBO can do to prevent the leak save paying the ransom and giving into the hacker’s demands. This is a pretty huge deal as there are some who fear that the HBO hack could be seven times larger than that of Sony, which was a pretty big deal back then.

New And Clear iPhone 8 Render Leaked

By now it’s safe to say that everyone pretty much knows what the iPhone 8 could look like. While there’s no way of knowing for sure until Apple makes the announcement, the leaks we’ve been seeing have been pretty damn consistent, and with the latest leak coming from the ever-reliable Evan Blass, it almost feels like there will be no more surprises left.

In a tweet by Blass, he shares a brand new clear and high resolution render of the upcoming iPhone 8. However it seems that this render isn’t an official Apple render, but it seems like it could instead be a render created by a case manufacturer to advertise their cases, especially since the iPhone is protected by such a case in the image.

However the render does confirm some features that we already know about, like the full screen bezel-less display with a notch at the top, and also the lack of a home button. What’s interesting however is that the front part of the phone has two circular cut outs, one of which is presumably for the front-facing camera, while the other could either be the ambient light sensor, or it could be the 3D laser scanner we’ve been hearing about that will help facilitate facial recognition.

Assuming this render is accurate, things are certainly looking pretty good and this could be the redesign that iPhone users have been asking for, but take it with a grain of salt and hopefully we will have the official details soon.
